That's true the school may ask for input but that doesn't mean that everyone gets what they want. When Thing 2 went into first grade EVERYONE asked for Mrs. S. Could they accomodate everyone's requests? No. Why? Because there would be 100 kids in Mrs. S's class and no one in the other classes. So they may take input into consideration, they just may not have the ability to do it. It's a school; not a genie in a bottle.

While I do remember all of my teachers and most of my classmates, this is true.
Another thing to think of...the teacher Thing 2 requested in 1st grade that he didn't get was a member at our church and we knew her pretty well. The teacher he got was new to the area so he had an opportunity to witness to her. Throughout the year he would share Jesus with her and come Christmas she came to the church to see him in the Christmas program and ended up attending quite frequently until they moved again.
Look at it from God's perspective; he could be a light in this new teacher's life. How amazing would that be?

Oh I agree! This year I asked that my youngest ds have a male teacher knowing he had a 75% of getting one of the 3 male teachers on or 4th grade team. Not asking for much right? If I had my way he would have gotten the most loved teacher in the entire building that was just moved from teaching science to teaching 4th grade - just like every other child's parents wanted as well. BUT we hit registration day and where was my child placed? In a classroom with the ONLY female teacher on the 4th grade team. It was like they didn't take into consideration not only my input, which they asked for, but they totally ignored his third grade teachers recommendations as well AND they put him in a classroom with another child both I and his 3rd grade teacher specifically asked that he NOT be placed with due to serious conflicts that happened in 3rd grade (including my child getting bullied by this other child simply because he was wheezing one day due to allergy related asthma). So I had to speak up for my ds.
I understand that not everyone is going to get what they want - I didn't get what I wanted with my daughters this year either as they both didn't get exactly who I wish they had. But sometimes it's the difference between having a mediocre okay school year and having a year that could affect the child's attitude toward school and learning for a lifetime. IF a school asks for parental input - I do believe that a parent should not be allowed to ask for specific teachers, but that input should be at least considered and I KNOW mine wasn't.
Maybe CSL - a trip to the school before school starts is in order? If nothing else to just meet the teacher beforehand.

Tomorrow evening is the Open House. It's an informal meeting with the teachers and I'm going to take him with me. I have to help during part of it so was going to leave my kids at home but others are going and since he has no idea who this lady is, I don't want him to lay eyes on her for the first time on Monday.
That's ridiculous how your son seemed to get exactly the opposite of what you and his previous teacher recommended. That's frustrating - and to be in the class with the one kid he had problems with too, I mean really. Were you able to get your son moved? I absolutely understand they can't accommodate everyone, and I said that in my request (maybe I shouldn't have)...even a heads-up would've made me feel better about it all. There have been a lot of changes over the summer. But I really do love this school (more and more when I read some of the posts here too! No books?!?!?). It's going to be a really good year.

Yes I was able to get my ds's classroom assignment switched. In talking with the principal about this whole situation I came to realize that the principal didn't realized the extent of the problem between he and the child I spoke of earlier. I guess she also went back and spoke again with the teacher he had for third grade. I too am very grateful that my kids attend the school they do. I've NEVER had a problem with ANY of the teachers at all and all of them seem very committed to the kids and their jobs.
And I'm not just some mom that demands my own way all the time, so I think that helps a lot when it comes to being taken seriously when I do have a concern.

We had the open house tonight so I met the new teacher. There was lots going on and there will be a parents-only meeting next Tuesday to meet with her more. But she's very huggy - I think she'll be great for him. And I was worried because only one other little boy that I know had gotten this teacher. I was afraid he'd be in a class full of girls. But it's half and half -10/10. There are only three little boys from last year and SEVEN brand new to the school! That's very exciting. I'm wondering if, because she was getting so many unknown boys, they gave her the three calmest, sweetest boys to go with the others. The one returning that I didn't know would be in his class is a very sweet, very smart little boy. I'm excited for him and ds to get to know each other better. I'm only sad that his one friend is not in his class but we'll plan playdates.
She's never taught second grade before but she's been through it as a parent four times! Most recently last year. We'll be good.

My daughter said all of her new teacher's are great (after one day) except her science teacher who "droned" on and on (her word). I told her that maybe it will get better because they were just going over the expectations.

I am sorry to resurrect this oldish thread but I just had to say how shocked I am that so many parents get to atleast say who they would like as their kid's teacher. The two School districts I live around we get no say and if we don't like the teacher TOUGH. (I capitalized because that is exactly what you get told if you call to ask about having it switched, I wasn't trying to yell at anyone.) I think it would be nice to beable to atleast have some imput but we don't.

This is why my kids are in the school we're in and we happily pay for it. I'm the parent. I will simply not be dictated to regarding my child's education or anything else.

Public schools vary greatly too! We do fill out parent input forms but are asked to refrain from asking for a specific teacher. This year all I wanted for my youngest ds was for him to get a male teacher and when he didn't I made a point of asking about it. I made my case and thankfully the principal listened. She didn't have to move him to his current classroom but I'm very grateful that she took my concerns into consideration.
I would have preferred another teacher for my youngest dd, but decided that although I might not think this is the best placement it might just be the best place for her.
I also don't go in specifically asking for certain teachers for my kids. I've been with this school long enough to KNOW most of the teachers and I know they all have different qualities. I know that they are all pretty decent teachers. I have my favorites of course, but in the long run we are pretty lucky as I don't know of a single teacher at the elementary level that I would have a problem with.

Okay...this made me think...hmmm....
1st grade-Mrs. R...-we learned to read from Dick and Jane books (I'm old)
2nd grade-Mrs. L...-she was unhappy that I needed a restroom break during the day and tied my hand (with a paper ball in my fist) by rubber band to my pencil to try to force me to hold my pencil correctly (perhaps there were some anger management issues here).
3rd grade-Mrs. M... (I think)...very sweet and let me be creative with my spelling work.
4th grade-we started changing classes but I think Mrs. P... was my English/handwriting teacher. She would hit students hands with rulers if Peterson handwriting slants/circles were proper.
5th grade-I remember the teacher that threated to horsewhip me if I didn' stop chewing on my hair. Another teacher was Mrs. S...she loved to have us memorize classic poems.
6th grade-Mr. S...taught science and called me "Eygore" like some of my precious fellow classmates. Can't remember my other teachers.
School nurse...Mrs. H...everyone was afraid of her because she hated it if you slouched.
Names taken out to keep from offending.
 I do have some of my memory. Of course, the 1960's are hard to forget.
