For those who have to preach or teach, my question is this: Do you always work on a particular sermon or lesson at once? Do you sometimes get an idea(s) and start working on multiple lessons as they come or is it best to focus on one idea.

Just throwing this around in my head

Personally I send much time in prayer about what to teach and preach. sometimes what is put on my heart is a single sermon or lesson, sometimes it turnes into a series; but I as of yet I do not work on multiple projects at one time.

Thanks

In preparing a message or even a series, I may sometimes come across a passage of scripture that jumps out to me for another topic. I note it down for future reference, and for when the Lord puts it in my heart to come back to. God will always show us, and lead us into the direction He wants us to go in.

When I used to teach/preach regularly, I too spent much time in prayer for guidance. I taught verse by verse most of the time so didn't have to be concerned about what text to use. But I did need to ask God to guide me as to what was to be the focus or application. When preaching at events, preparation was different, as God had to provide the text I was to use.

Alas, I eventually stopped teaching regularly to pursue a secular education and profession. But in my recent renewed desire to know and live for God, I find myself mentally recording "sermon" ideas as I read through the bible. Even when I taught, the preparation study was in addition to the regular "through the bible" readings.

This would be something different for each individual. Many times I have been working on one message and had another come to mind and filed it away for future use or just focused on it for a while as a distraction till the Lord gave me more on the message I was prepairing for of cours when doing line by line then that is just a lot of prayer and research then when it comes time it is a lot of editing.

I study the Word, pray and ask the Lord what to preach. He gives me the message as I speak, as I don't have written or prepared sermons before I stand up to bring the Word.

I have had experiences where I went to church, the pastor would come up to me, and say "You preach this morning", so I have learned to just trust the Lord for the message because He knows best.

2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Mar 13:11 But when they shall lead [you], and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

I keep a notebook and jot down ideas as they come - it's amazing how often these become the beginning of a full sermon. We follow a lectionary so the scriptures for my sermons are already selected for Sunday but the Lord often gives me examples weeks in advantance.
