Never knew the sidewalk one? Even Goofus and Gallant in Highlights magazine when I was a preschooler knew that one! LOL You do it so that if a car splashes or careens into the sidewalk, it is you that gets dirty or dead instead of the lady.

Exactly!

Now I never heard of that one before, why is that? Also, that wouldn't really work in Boston at all.

Jenny Fair is right. It's mainly so if a car splashes, the woman doesn't get her dress messed up, or so the gentleman gets the brunt of any danger from the street... Of course, originally, it was so she'd be under the overhang of buildings, back in the days when throwing trash out the windows was a common practice.

Why wouldn't it work in Boston? Narrow sidewalks?

I still want to know why it wouldn't work in Boston.

Because the streets are simply just too crowded and unless you are mowing somebody over, you constantly have to be walking around people instead.

I tend to violate this rule because since I have a hearing loss and don't hear much out of my right ear, I prefer people to be on my left if possible. Could I have her on my right? sure, but it just makes it a lot easier for me to hear her.

so I think I might have to pass on that one.

Nice for your mom, but I bet the other girl was heartbroken. I hope she met someone else, though .

The other woman was the one to break it off. She heard he got drafted in the Army and didn't want to deal with it. He joined the AF instead and that's when he and my mum started dating...it was for 6 weeks then he left. After basic (which is 6 weeks long) he went to school and she went down there and they got married; 37 years ago.

Just walk on the opposite side of the sidewalk.

Guys - don't wear more jewelry than your date

Actually - too much jewelry on either person could be distracting?

Showing up late isn't such a good idea either ... especially not late and sweaty, then excusing yourself to the restroom of the restaurant and coming back after taking a swim in cologne, as per the beginning of the thread.

For some reason that reminded me of the M's pitcher who was wearing large diamond earrings that reflected light and caused a hitter to whine that he'd been blinded. I think the pitcher ended up tossed from the game, but it's been a while, so I could be wrong.

I lived in NYC - it can be done, without mowing people over. You just have to take the lead and watch out for her. You can still walk side by side - just you must be closer to the street. It's your responsibility to make sure she is safe - especially during the winter!

I'm with you - and I lived in Boston for a while, and walking alone I noticed that MOST other people were in pairs are more, across the sidewalk. There was plenty of room for two side by side ... it was usually when it was more than I got pushed off the sidewalk.

Yes, I agree that men should make sure that their woman is safe. Now comparing Boston to NYC? They are different in a real lot of ways. Lets start with New Yorkers being nicer than Bostonian's and that the streets are much wider also.

Hi Losgan, good to see you around!

What is highlighted really does happen in Boston.

That bit on walking on the outer side of the pavement, seems to have struck a cord with some people. I never knew that such etiquette existed until the last guy I dated insisted that I walk on the inside of the pavement. Another thing he did was that if we went to the cinema or theatre he would sit closer to the aisle. When guys do these things we ladies tend to feel really special I know that I did.

We also get spoiled. When I go out with a guy now, if he doesn't do these things I have to wonder, where are his manners ?

I told a friend of mine about the pavement thing, and how apparently not all guys know about it. She said that guys have to be taught these things by their parents. I think that could be true, such matters of etiquette would have had to be passed down through the generations.

I have a first date worth remembering. And it's with my daughter's dad, some 15 years ago.

We were sitting at this restaurant, and some younger crowd said something about me which wasn't nice at all. I didn't deserve that, and I don't know what brought that on. I think they were just kids (teens). My boyfriend at that time stood up, walked over to their booth, and told them to apologize to me. He did it in a manner that showed authority, but without being bullish. I fell head over heels with him. I felt that the guy would defend me or fight for me if I ever got in trouble. Unfortunately, he's far from that guy that I saw that night.

I know men do a lot of things on the first date to impress their date. I would rather see men do these things only if they would be willing to them all the time, and not just when dating.

I'll have to see if I still have the draft laying around here somewhere. I have been involved in some other studies though so I'll have to get to it when I get to it.

Don't judge them too harshly. It's likely that never crossed their minds, since they probably weren't taught it. Not everyone had good parenting.
