How about excuse yourself to the ladies room just in case you have something stuck between your teeth? It also gives you ample opportunity to "powder your nose" etc. Here's one: DON'T take the toothpick from the restaurant and pick your teeth in front of your date.

Keep the volume of your voice to a medium. Laugh, but don't over do it making it look like you are forcing it, or appearing that you are nervous.

I can't remember if this has already been offered, but I say just be yourself. The person's going to find out who you are sooner or later anyway. So laugh to your heart's content, Tink!

Here's another one. If you must bring a gift, do NOT bring a living creature of any kind. He/She may be allergic. Not to mention, if is does NOT work out, that person will think of you (and prolly not in a good way for giving such a gift) every time they see that animal.

See..that's just not how I am. What you see is what you get...every time. Besides, wouldn't it be better for me to know if he can't stand my laugh then to let it loose later and find out he hates it? And wouldn't it be better for him to know I sound like I have mad cow disease early on and figure out if he can stand it enough?

And if it works out very badly you will be responsible for the horrible life that poor little animal will have as your one time date comes home and kicks the poor thing as a surrogate for kicking you. Do you really want that on your conscience?

Don't mention marriage. Guys especially - don't start unloading all of your junk: past failures, inner struggles, ...etc...

One of my best friends told me that she knew on her first date that she would marry the guy. Of course, I don't think she TOLD him that. But sure enough it happened!

ORIGINAL: FunBetty Oooh, another tip from above-mentioned housemother: Always allow the guy to open a door for you. If he fails to take the intiative, simply stand at the door and wait. Then thank him for being so kind as to open the door for you. If he doesn't pick up on the clue, move on to guy #2. Indeed! I feel a little put out if a woman opens her own door. It puts me in the habit of not doing it, and I don't like that.

And on the flip side. Guys, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS be a gentleman. Open doors, walk on the traffic side of the sidewalk, offer your arm or hand on uneven terrain, pull out her chair. Now I never heard of that one before, why is that? Also, that wouldn't really work in Boston at all.
