clout -> Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 2:30:54 PM)

Since I moved south in the late 1940's, the greatest area of SGM has constantly shifted. Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, Birmingham, as it relates to number of concerts, promoters, size of crowds, television and radio exposure, etc.

Since SGM has grown to even an international interest, I was wondering where the greatest excitement seems to exist. Right now where I live, suburban Atlanta, there seems to be a dwindling of interest.

Louisville, KY, maybe?

At least in September?[;)]

I would say, though, that even if it's dwindling, the Atlanta area seems to still be way ahead of almost everywhere else in the country. Where I live, I'm fortunate to get a concert within my 5 or 8-county region once every few months. There, you often get to choose between several every weekend.[:)]

That's a great question! Off the top of my head, I would have guessed Nashville because of all the studios and the number of group members that live close. I would have thought that it would also be a pretty central place to travel out of. But when I look at various artists' schedules, they are ALL OVER the place! I think there may be "hot spots" rather than a "center."

DeeAnnBailey -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 2:58:08 PM)

We are in Greenville, SC there is a concert within 2 hours of us almost every weekend night and some week nights. In Greenville, we have some but we are in the center of a good travelling area anyway.

rogasinger4Him -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 3:16:46 PM)

Chattanooga has a major group within 50 miles 2 or 3 weekends per month and with a bunch of regional groups there is Southern Gospel music to be heard live just about every night except Wednesday.

But on the negative side there was not enough support in the Chattanooga area to keep SGM Fanfair from leaving for greener pastures in Pigeon Forge.

Pigeon Forge is certainly a hotspot for southern gospel music.

JimC -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 3:19:26 PM)

Good question, Melvin.
We have had a slowdown around Atlanta, but I think the "Ground Zero" is still roughly in the Jacksonville-Memphis-Richmond triangle.....for the MOST part.

I'm guessing it's between the Lead and Baritone singers. But that's just me.

Jim, I'd modify that to Jacksonville-Jackson, TN-Richmond. Memphis has no SG radio presence save a 4 hour block on Sunday mornings on a public access station, and has relatively few visits from the major pro groups. Even Jackson doesn't have too many concerts, but they have a good SG station and the Songfest every July.

88keysinnc -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 4:14:55 PM)

I can tell you where it"s not, Mr. Klaudt....eastern NC!! We are lucky to have 1-2 groups in each year. Typically these are the same ones (Inspirations and McKamey's) and I jut don't care for either. I've often wished I lived in the metro Atlanta area so I could attend a concert or two every weekend.

We have a radio presence in my area, the Solid Gospel network. Unfortunately, it's an AM station....very low quality and it has a generic feel to it.

ncdrawl -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 4:41:57 PM)

Id guess Nashville still. Most everyone I know in a proffessional group lives near there..

Kerrlaw -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 4:46:21 PM)

I live near Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg/Knoxville and we are sure not hurting for opportunities to see Southern Gospel.

Three day Gaither Family Fest in May, three day Gatlinburg Gathering in September, Grand Old Gospel Reunion in August, the week long shindig in Pigeon Forge every year (can't think of the name), Greater Vision's big event, a whole month of concerts at Dollyworld in October, semi-annual Gaither Christmas tour in Knoxville, the Mull concert series at New Hope church, the new Florida Boys soon to be regulars at a theater in Sevierville, Kingdom Heirs nine months of the year at Dollywood, and church concerts almost every weekend, all within an hour of my house.

Also can go to several events like the Greene's Homecoming, the Inspiration Park events, Chattanooga concerts, etc. with a two hour drive. Four hours takes us to Nashville, most of eastern NC, or Atlanta. And it's not too far to Louisville.

We are certainly blessed, if we could be blessed with more free time and money it would be even better. [sm=cooltilt.gif]

One of the best things about living here is that we have a powerful 24 hour per day all Southern Gospel FM radio station (WJBZ - Praise 96.3).

Seaton -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 5:38:30 PM)

I live 25 miles north of Charlotte NC and there is a concert within an hour/two hour drive just about every weekend. Crowds vary. You go to one concert and there is a few hundred people and the next time you go to a concert there may be close to 1,000 or more.

MaestroSC -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 5:43:27 PM)

Hey neighbor, I'm just a few miles south of you :)

And yea, around Charlotte there is no shortage of groups/concerts though probably not the epicenter of SGM. Hard to say if that exists.

Just to give you a heads up about some upcoming concerts in the eastern area, The Dixie Echoes will be at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Bolivia, August 22nd the Dove Brothers were at my church June 10th and will be in Lumberton in September, Singing in the sun is a three day event in April, Gaither is there in October or November again this year, Crabb family was in Holden Beach July, just to name a few events that take place.....wish you could get 100.9 in Fairmont on FM, also 1070 or 1040 in Wilmington is good. I generally listen to wfgw.org on the computer most of the time, a great station from the Asheville Black mountain area started by the Grahams! God bless!

Drip -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 6:41:03 PM)

Melvin, according to most of the groups I talk to, I am not sure there is one anymore--SAD

robertyork -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/11/2008 6:44:35 PM)

In the winter months, Flordia.....In the summer months in the northern states. Where do they have the most concerts? Within a 100 mile radius of Atlanta.

deblawson -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/12/2008 10:25:20 AM)

I live in North Georgia and there is a SG concert within 1 - 2 hours every week-end. I am very blessed to live here.

L5Ropeholder -> RE: Where is the center of SGM now? (8/12/2008 12:30:16 PM)

I think I need to move, this thread is getting me depressed! You are all so blessed to have SG so close to you...
