coinpurse -> struggling with being messy??? (8/2/2008 6:28:54 PM)

Do you close your bedroom door because you dont want others to see all the clothing on the floor and other mess?

Do you get anxious when someone last minute needs a ride and the car is messy -again!

Is the only reason your shared space in your apt. is clean is because your roommate would have a fit or maybe move out if you didnt keep up? or you are afraid she might talk bad about you for your sloppiness?

Do you almost never put things back where they belong ASAP? and you do it consistently and when you look around 3 days later, its like a tornadoewent through?

Do you not sort your mail/junk mail ASAP and a few weeks later look at your desk and its a pile of mess...AND you missed that court date again or that bill cause you didnt know where the papers were?
Do you hold on to the junk mail/market flyers promising to look at it later (yeah right) and it stacks up?

Do you have a file cabinet, but its practically empty cause all the papers are under the bed or on the desk or anywhere except the file cabinet?

Are you a single person with 0 kids but yet the dishes are stacked up and kept in the sink multiple nights???

Do you complain about not having enough money, yet you throw food away cause you dont keep up w/the inventory in the fridge, so the food goes bad cause you didnt know that was there?

Are you great at work at maintaining things and keeping them organized, but at home, you dont give it the same respect???

I prayed for years for God to help me!!!! I always blamed my messiness on being too busy...when I became unemployed and had plenty of time on my hands (and was still messy) -the real truth came out!!!! and the fact is I was never that busy anyway when I was working...Today I figured out the issue and I vow to never go back to the mess!

Enough examples, you get my point?

Ladies, has any of you overcome being messy at home??? How did it happen?

I don't struggle with being messy, I find it very easy!! [sm=icon_smile_boggled.gif]
I do have problems with this. The mail is the one thing I've gotten a handle on, only to make sure I don't loose all my money on late payments! My son's room is the one ready to be condemned![:'(][sm=fireanger.gif][sm=popsigh.gif]

Sadey -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/2/2008 9:31:54 PM)

I always blamed it on my kids and then they grew up and left and I still fight it. It has helped that I have gone through and touched everything in my whole house. I threw away and I hauled away to Salvation Army. It felt so good. I mean I went through every single item in my house. Every closet, drawer, box and bag. My house is so much easier to keep clean now. Empty spaces are beautiful. I am still not tidy but I have way less to be messy with.

My kitchen is probably my biggest challange and have been working on leaving it clean at night before I go to bed.
Good luck and it is worth it

Consecrated2God -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/3/2008 7:42:43 AM)

I don't struggle as much as I used to, mostly because I have to be disciplined now. If I don't keep up on things they get out of hand very quickly. I also have more help now that the kids are older. When I didn't have kids I would let dishes go several days before I washed them, now I can go about two meals and we're out of clean dishes. I'm hoping that all this self-discipline will become a habit and when the kids move out I'll find cleaning house easier.

kimberlysfrog -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/3/2008 10:57:27 AM)

I do struggle with it, and even more so now that I'm married and my husband moved even more stuff into the house.

Another site for messies is http://www.messies.com/ I discovered Sandra Felton years ago when I read her book "Messie No More' and I remembered her yesterday when I was posting in another discussion here about a similar topic.

One of the things I like that she recommends is the 'Mount Vernon' style of getting organized: http://www.messies.com/get_started/mt_vernon_method/

coinpurse -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/3/2008 2:58:27 PM)

I LOVE YOU GUYS!

Im so glad Im not entirely alone in this! I'm going to check out the websites you recommended!

What I felt God (or my conscience) tell me is that I should leave my bedroom door open and open the blinds every morning 1st thing...because if theres anything to be ashamed of or anything that I should not want to be seen, I would pick it up / clean it up it ASAP...
(I live in an apartment complex) I also always close my bedroom door cause my roommate is a neat freak and I dont want her to see my mess...she herself leaves her door open 90-95% of the time and its nice and neat...she has nothing to hide:)

Im doing some spring cleaning today...I just cant believe the junk I was holding onto and the stuff I have that I had no clue about...Im happy about this spring cleaning, I pray for the courage to finish cause Im tired of doing it already!

I'm not a flylady fan, I will admit, though I know that it works well for some. I have come away from her site on previous occasions though with some good ideas so it's worth looking at (I like the one where you set the timer for 15 mins and sort and then have a break).

I have a room-by-room list of everything that I need to do in each room, whether it's daily, weekly, monthly or whenever. When I've completed something, I tick it off (I use acetate and wipe off pens) so I know when I last did it (my memory can be real bad at times).

I also have a daily tasks list. I pick 3 of the most essential things to do from the room-by-room list and do them. If I have time, I do another 3. It's taking time, but I'm getting there slowly. Slowly is better than never though!

I'm going to check out the messies site now[;)]

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/3/2008 10:49:10 PM)

it all boils down to being (and staying) organized....otherwise our house of two adults and five kids gets too messy wayyyyyy too fast!!!! So I work all the time on organization...keeping things are well put up as possible. If something isn't working, I keep at it til I find the way it works best (that is different with every place we have ever lived, so since we move often...military life...it keeps me busy trying new methods all the time)

I personally can't stand the Flylady site. It seems very tedious to me and things get worse when I follow most of her things (and don't even get me started about the whole sink shining thing!!!). The one thing I have gleaned from her though is the fast (speed) cleaning. We do that a few times a day...buzz through and clean all we can in 15 minutes (well in the morning it's 30 minutes)...then when the time is up we are usually done with most of the daily chores!!!! About once a week (usually mondays, cause it's the worst then after the long weekend and because on sundays we rest and don't do chore time so much) we do deep cleaning...and get it all done in a few hours. (Oh, when I say we, I men me and the kiddos...8yo, 7yo, 3yo, and 2yo....and there is a 1mo, but he doesn't clean...he just cries when he wants to eat or is dirty...interrupts my cleaning...lol)

humbleinspirit -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/3/2008 10:51:02 PM)

I am told that if I just put in 15 minutes a day cleaning that eventually I would have a spotless house! The only thing is because of such things as work, etc. I tend to be too tired to want to clean anything. Then on the weekends I just want to relax instead! [:o]

oh yeah....I am a HUGE fan of lists!!!! We have them for everything too. I slide them into a page protector sheet and we use dry or wet erase markers to mark things off...then just wipe it off when we are done!!! (We do homeschooling, and use that method a lot for school papers too..works brilliantly!!)

LOL...I wish it worked that way!!! We do about 30 minutes in the morning, 15 after lunch, 15 after nap (before hubby comes home) and 15 at night before bed. Those are just to maintain some order throughout the week since we are home all (most) of the time. Then like I said, once a week it is a few hours worth of cleaning. Then also saturday mornings we tag team it and do more deep cleaning things that I don't get to during my weekly cleaning alone.

Yes PC, thats understandable because you have little ones around. I do not have an excuse, I'm single instead!

Yes, but even with just one person I don't see how just 15 minutes of work a day would produce a clean and organized house. My mom lives alone in a small duplex, and is pretty much gone to work or church except when she is sleeping (and she is one of those people that walks into a room and things seem to jump back into place for her) yet she has to spend a lot more then just 15 minutes a day to keep things neat and clean.
The reality is, no matter how many people live there, 15 minutes a day is not a reasonable time for such expectations. I think that is where so many people go wrong....their expectations don't line up with the reality of what it takes.

Consecrated2God -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/4/2008 10:22:41 AM)

I think I could keep up with about fifteen minutes a day cleaning if I were single and if I picked up after myself. [:D]

IF you started with a clean place, then maybe (for some people)....but that poster said that in that time eventually the place would GET clean. maintaining clean isn't as hard, so I agree there....but in actually getting it to the maintain stage, I don't think it is a realistic expectation.

creationtalk -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/4/2008 11:35:31 AM)

As has already been commented, I don't struggle with being messy, it comes naturally. Of course, I am also the quintessential packrat AND I still have things from storage/former office in the house from Hur Katrina...

The ironic thing is that once up on a time I was VERY organized. I could put my hand on the purchase reciept for an appliance I bought 4 years ago in minutes. I knew where every penny went and, although I had a lot of coupons, they were all carefully filed under either category or expiration date.... Then I had a child...now I'm lucky that my head is attached since that means that most of the time I can find it...might not be able to get a useful, coherent thought out of it, but at least I know where it is...

Yes, but it's getting better. Part of the problem is very little storage space and some very space-intensive hobbies (knitting, crochet, quilting, beading, other needlework, painting and drawing, reading, writing) and career/jobs--teaching (university level and homeschool), research...with associated papers.

quote:

Do you get anxious when someone last minute needs a ride and the car is messy -again!

NOt exactly, but I do sometimes wonder (1) how the truck got this messy this quick and (2) can I move enough of the junk to be able to fit another person in (truck seats 6--there are 2 of us usually).

I'm fairly good at putting things where they belong...if I can find a place where they can belong...and I have a tornado go through my house on a regular basis...he's about 50 inches tall, talks inssently and holds my heart...

quote:

I HAVE a desk???? Wow! That means the pile is only half as tall as I thought! I don't very often miss bills, I always sort the bills from other things and put them in a specific place...also most are paid online the weekend after my first paycheck of the month...

quote:

Do you have a file cabinet, but its practically empty cause all the papers are under the bed or on the desk or anywhere except the file cabinet?

Papers are under the bed, on the desk, and in boxes because the file cabinet is full and I don't have room for a second.

quote:

Do you complain about not having enough money, yet you throw food away cause you dont keep up w/the inventory in the fridge, so the food goes bad cause you didnt know that was there?

I am often frustrated because food goes bad then has to be thrown away...but usually this happens not because I didn't know it was there, but because I planned to cook it one night...but then had to work late so it got delayed...but the next night couldn't cook it because we had something else planned and didn't have time...then don't want to cook a big meal because....planned to take care of the food and get it frozen or otherwise but forgot/didn't get it done because there was an emergency or something happened or I was too tired and forgot. The most frustrating thing is I have food in hte cabinents that expired 2 years ago because I've never had time to cook it.

quote:

Are you great at work at maintaining things and keeping them organized, but at home, you dont give it the same respect???

Work is similar to home in a lot of ways--we have so much going on that the "cleanup" often doesn't happen until it gets critical...it's not quite as cluttered simply because most of our "mess" is on the computer.

coinpurse -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/4/2008 11:44:14 AM)

PeculiarLady,

I agree...If you start with a clean place, 15 minutes might be sufficient.
I might need 15 minutes twice a day to guarrantee a neat place once my "spring cleaning" is done...

floydette -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/4/2008 11:49:25 AM)

Just came in to the thread. I plan to go back and get it all read.... I have pondered this (in my own life) and for me, it was really important to find out WHY I was messy. It depends on the WHY before you adjust the WHAT. If one person is an overwhelmed perfectionist and another is just really busy and another person just doesn't mind the mess - those are 3 different solutions.

coinpurse -> RE: struggling with being messy??? (8/4/2008 11:51:04 AM)

Agree, I prefer to relax on weekends and after work...
but I also will spend 5 hours in forums while fruit flies are flying around the kitchen sink and claim that I have no time and Im tired!

Honestly, I never really truly relaxed cause the mess is on my mind and around me...

To actually do more cleaning yeterday, I had to pretend that I was at work and that I have a boss who will check in with me...and that Im getting paid to pick up these pennnies/pens on the floor:) and other mess Ive accumulated!
