The pastor says, turn around and greet those around you. Soon after, you begin shaking hands with a number of people. You notice that one of the persons who is sticking their hand out toward you, just coughed in that same hand.

We all have heard that one of the primary ways germs are transmitted, is through hands. So, to reduce getting sick, perhaps we could adopt another form of greeting?

I'm not a germaphobe, but, I am tired of catching things by shaking other people's hands who are sick. Also, when I am sick, I certainly do not wish to transmit my germs to others.

What do you think?

Scripture does not tell us to greet each other with a handshake it says;

(Rom 16:16) Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you.

(1Co 16:20) All the brethren greet you. Greet ye one another with an holy kiss.

(1Co 16:20) All the brethren greet you. Greet ye one another with an holy kiss.

(2Co 13:12) Greet one another with an holy kiss.

So come to our Church and you want get many handshakes, but you will recieve many hugs and Holy kisses.

Thsnks
RC

Be honest. Just say that you have a phobia about germs. If one can't be honest in church something is wrong.

Another option ... we did this very discretely while on a mission trip where cleanliness was not possible due to the lack of running water. We carried a hand disinfectant and applied it after hugs and handshakes when no one was looking. Just remember not to touch your person before you get a chance to use it.

I thought the Pastor's comment about Holy Kisses was good too!!

Interesting that the saints of old did not fear the flames, angery mobs, snakes or poisons in their food but by faith endured all things. For faith does not worry about life in such a manner. Faith says whether we live or die today, praise God! However, if we are not right in our faith with God, we may well reframe from dying needlessly. Nevertheless, can a man die before his appointed time without the foreknowledge of God? And even if we be stricken down for a time in sickness, who of faith would despise it, knowing full well that in our weakness the glory and grace of God are magnified?

Do not worry about such things for these are what unbelievers worry about. I remember going to one church where the whole church drank out of the same cup. By the time it got to me, I knew that there was not a clean edge to drink from. Nevertheless, I drank and praised God.

My pastor has free sanitizer outside in these cool dispensers. "After you shake hands, please use the hand sanitizer!"

It's mainly because he has cancer and during recovery he was rather susceptible to a lot of illnesses.

I understand what Concerto is saying and sympathise with his views.

RCJames: as a preacher have you ever had people mis-interpret kissing amongst the congregation? I've known cases where the vicar kissing ladies of the congregation as a greeting was frowned upon.

Maybe it's because we're British !!!!

Just remember not to touch your eyes, ears, nose or mouth until you've washed your hands, slip on a pair of latex gloves to capture any errant germs until you can or an alternative remedy is touching elbows. Common sense goes a long way.

Well I don't know about all that. I have been hugging, kissing on the cheek, shaking hands, and bouncing snotty nosed kids on my knee, and laying hands on the sick during prayer for 45 years of ministry. all this with no sanitizer, masks, self breathing aparatuses, or hazmat suits.

And I have not "Caught" anything as of yet.

Thanks
RC

Never had a complaint nor a problem of any sort.

Of course we don't have Vicars in my Church .

Thanks

Well I was being a bit sarcastic, RC. It's said, speaking of germs, after the victim has symptoms, runny nose, fever, etc, he's no longer contiguous he's just trying to expel the dead virus. The contiguous state is before one even has symptoms.

LOL! Well, then, you'd better steer clear of ANY public place where you touch door handles, handrails, products on shelves others have touched, shopping carts, gasoline pumps, money, the ATM machine . . . . I could go on and on. Church is no more a dangerous place than these.

But if you are concerned, then yes, do as someone else suggested and carry a small bottle of sanitizer in your pocket.

Shaking hands and slobbering is an excellent time to build your immunity and possible friendships.

If I die from a stinkin germ I caught in church then it was meant to be.

We could all just gently bump elbows with each other.

We do more hugging in our church than anything else, but we don't have a "turn and greet your neighbor" time. I always thought that was silly.

I would be more uncomfortable being kissed at church than fearing I'll get sick from one shaking my hand.

I shared this in the 'Shocking Christian Revelations' thread we had a few months back...

=======

During the course of my week I am very careful on whose hands I shake.. I wash my hands a lot and always take care to not touch any orifice if I just finished shaking someone's hands and I had not yet had a chance to wash them.

So you guessed it..............................................

Church is absolute torture for me when I know that certain people there did not wash their hands after using the bathroom. And they were the ones that absolutely always came up to me wanting to shake my hand.

I keep a mini bottle of hand sanitizer in my purse to use after the hand shaking.

The more you try to sanitize your enviroment the more suseptable to germs you will become.

Your body was designed to take care of these germs. When exposed, your body will develop defences against the germ. The next time, you won't be affected as much.

Kids going to school for the first time are exposed to many germs they have not encountered yet. My grandson was sick a lot this year, his first year in school. Doc said, his body had to have time to get use to the new exposures and eventually, they won't affect him so much.

I had a lung disease where I was very susceptable to disease. Your cold would make me have asmetic bronchitis. What was one of the things I did at my pentacostal church?

Greeter at the main entrance. I greeted everyone who came in. Hugged them. Shook their hands...all that stuff.

I trusted God.

well I have gone through hugs, handshaking and a few kisses most prefer just hugging or handshaking in the past 11 years as a Christian and I have never worried about getting sick. Rarely have gotten sick. Just not something I worry about. Of course at our church we do try to always have tissues on hand for people who cough or sneeze.

I vote for Walker's answer. As a handwasher, I know exactly where the OP is coming from. So this is an area where God has had to work mighty hard to teach me to trust. Eating illhandled/illprepared chicken is another. But I've done it---raw chicken. But I'm learning. . . God is in control even of the germs.

This is one of those issues where making sense puts you into position of being ridiculed by those questioning your faith and quoting verses that may or may not have validity in an era of highly resistent superbugs.

If fellow parishoners that had colds, etc. would unselfishly stay home then the problem you cite would not be an issue in the church. But, thoughtless people are everywhere... and mpre than willing to give you a 'holy kiss' whether you like it or not. It's interesting that THEY were not the ones ridiculed or chided.

Sooner or later, we are most likely facing to a point where even the doubters will be taking a second look at unsanitary conditions. I'm guessing that many of those chiding you opt to take their blood pressure and cholesterol medications. So, the criticism based on 'faith' is moot.

God gave us brains to understand sanitation and the every-increasing super-pathogen probem. We need to use it.

TMeeks,

The longer I live (and I'm now 53) the more I'm convinced that life is about getting over everything my wise parents taught me. . . well almost everything. Now what do I mean by 'getting over'?

I mean learning to surrender and let God be God in my life. Yes, God gave me a brain and I can control some things in my life. But most things I have little or no control over. And I can either spend a large amount of my time in conflict and disturbed, or I can choose to trust the Lord. KWIM? Oh, I still joke about launching people to the Isle of Stupida but I know I am the one who needs to change, to accept others as they are, to love as Jesus loves and to trust God to care for me.

He has. He does. And He will.

Good to hear from you again, dear brother. Hope all is well in your world! LL

Why thank you!

My schedule has been particularly tough these last few months. So, while I pop in from time to time, I haven't been able to really participate as I would like. Both my wife and myself have entered that phase of life where the parents that took care of us need us to take care of them. Thanks for asking.
