Hi HumbleinSpirit,

Thanx for keeping this thread going. Very appreciated. I see it dropping in the list of threads and then - hey presto - Humble raises it again to the top. Well done and thanx.

I too don't have $240,000 - but now I have one paper clip. Found it this morning behind the sofa.

Isn't it great? What does it say in the Bible about the old lady who lost a coin and when she found it she held a party costing 100 times as much ????

Well, I won't be holding a party just yet. Not for one paper clip anyway !!!

I don't remember the part of her having a party that cost 100 times as much as the coin she found. I think someone's been adding to the story.

Hi Maggie,

You are of course right. I have been adding to the story. But let's consider this - in my defence.

"When she finds it, (the lost coin) she calls her friends and neighbours together, and says to them, ‘I am so happy I found the coin I lost. Let us celebrate!’ " Luke 15:8.

Let's assume she invites six friends and neighbours (minimum) let's assume she gives them a cup of tea each and a piece of cake, and perhaps a sandwich or two. No expensive alcoholic drinks. Let's also forget the party hats and music - although I wonder what celebration it is without party hats and music. And no alcohol. By my reckoning, and judging by the high prices here in the UK, such a measly celebratory party would cost at a minimum £10. Perhaps more if she bought ham instead of cheese for the sandwiches.

So all in all, she would no doubt spend more than the one silver coin she lost and found. Perhaps not as much as 100 times more ... but more it is.

Would you hold a party if you found a coin you lost? If so, please don't forget to invite me. I'll bring the party hats and my CD of party songs. I'll bring some wine too.

I see your point but I somehow imagine it differently. Perhaps the silver coin was worth a lot more than we imagine, and perhaps the cost of entertaining neighbours wasn't great in those days. I have people over for just tea and that's all I serve. Costs me the price of a couple of teabags. People in those days lived much closer to the land in that place and that time. So they may have had large amounts of some food item that was "surplus" that they could pull out for a party.

You may well be right.

It just struck me as funny to hold a party for a coin that's been found.

But then again, in those days people cared for each other more and I suspect they would genuinely rejoice that someone had found an item they had lost.

I can just imagine today what my neighbour would say if I told him I found a coin or a ring I had lost.

It would make a fun story to write it from the viewpoint you expressed--the event happening today with Britain's culture, values and economy.

Hi Maggie,

I agree with your view. The same story in today's Britain's context would be very interesting indeed.

I can only speak for Britain of course, because I live here. But it saddens me at people's attitudes and the "I'm alright Jack; I don't care for the rest" mentality.

It seems to me that people have become totally self-centred - not selfish mind you. But self-centred. Sure, they give a lot to charities whether through donations or TV appeals. So they are generous; yet at the same time they wouldn't care for a needy neighbour or some problem right under their nose.

Here's an example. My neighbour constantly parks his car infront of my driveway. He has seen me struggle to get in and out - reversing - several times. He has even helped me reverse. Yet it has not occured to him to park just a little way off my driveway. Or in his driveway which can take three cars easily. It's obvious to him that it is in his interest to drive further away in case my foot slips and I accidentally reverse into his parked car. Yet he still parks there.

I've often wondered whether he is just obtuse - or is it self-centred. He wants that space in the street and he'll take it come what may. Even though parking in his driveway is safer than the street.

I've seen several other similar examples at work.

If only stupidity were an exportable asset ... we'd be the richest nation on earth.
