Ready or not...there they go. :)
I don't mean to go off topic but my youngest daughter has been in school an entire week now. Well, almost. Friday we held her out so that we could take her to the doctor. Her shoulder and back are hurting a great deal from toting her book bag already. They haven't even been issued any books yet. These are simply all the required school supplies. We asked if she could keep them in a locker. "Sorry, no lockers." Can she leave them in her classroom? "Sorry, no assigned desks, therefore no safe place to leave them." Can she only bring in the supplies when they are needed? "Sorry, she may need any of her supplies at any time." Can we get her a rolling book bag? "Sorry, rolling book bags are not allowed because they are too noisy."
My daughter is actually toting a book bag and a large cloth bag. We couldn't fit everything into just one. She weighs 84 lbs. The book bags weigh a little over 30. I don't know what we're going to do when they actually give her the books she is supposed to have.

Hi Neeva!
This weekend seems to be dragging right along. We were supposed to go rafting today but the water was low and we stayed home. My husband's son left yesterday and Kali's competition is over so I have like nothing major coming up. I totally don't know what to do with myself. I guess I should just relax and take it all in. Kids are getting kind of excited for school. Well, the girls are. I am getting excited to work again eventhough I enjoy my time off. But I only work during the school year.
Garcy, still praying for your job. I still have to figure out what I am going to do when my kids are in school all day long. I hope that I can still stay home and keep the house, cook the meals and cart the kids around, but with the economony being what it is, who knows.
We finally got a bit of rain today. I am not sure if it was enough to make a difference, but it did rain pretty hard for about 20 minutes. Our lawn needed help to begin with and I am trying to grow new grass around the front and side of the house since there was none for like 4 feet out from the house. Just dirt. Today I raked the soil and seeded where the last set of seeds didn't take. Then I found this stuff that is supposed to be for new grass so hopefully by this time next week, I will have lots of baby grass growing. I think it is going to take two more summers to get the yard in good condition. But I have a really good tan this year with all the outside work.

Wow ... in my chiropractor's office is a poster about kids and backpacks. It says that for elementary and middle school, the backpacks should weigh no more than 10% of the child's weight. Once they hit highschool, it can go up to 20% of their weight (since the bones are more formed than in the younger years). But that bag is already 35% of her body weight. That is WAY too much for anyone!!! I'd be telling the school that if they aren't supplying a place to keep things, and won't allow rolling backpacks, then you'll be sending them all of the chiropractic bills until she graduates!!!

I'm going to say this here, and nowhere else.
There is a poster (not here) whose font drives me batty - and their posts? Oy vey! I thought ESL, but I'm guessing not based on the profile. Maybe new to the Wide Wide World of Web? (50 points if you get that reference) That would explain the harsh font and jarring posts but I would love to introduce them to the concept of NOT using Capitized letters in the Middle of their PostS but saving them for THE words That matter. I know I could block them, but it isn't their fault that I don't like their favorite font, and, to be honest, theirs isn't the only one I have to work to read.
And, they certainly aren't the only poster whose posts make NO SENSE to me.
And, as for capitization, umm, I can't be casting any stones in that department, now can I?
RE: School, kids, etc.
We are going through clothes. It is sad that DeeDee was upset to outgrow her only Aeropostle shirt because she doesn't want made fun of for NOT having one. Then, she admitted they made fun of her for only having one.
BigBee is home from camp, and going back tomorrow night. One more week.
We need to find a solution for the babysitting problems. DeeDee can't stay at granny's next summer, she is picking up bad habits. I can't see allowing an 11yo at home by herself every day. She will be out of 5th grade but I don't know how she would do. A day or two here and there I guess would work, but that doesn't cover the summer. BigBee is watching her now, but he is planning on working at camp next year.

I don't want to go through clothes. I don't! But I KNOW it has to be done.
Bedroom deep cleaning is on the agenda for this week and that includes closets and dressers. YUCK!!!

Ok, what do you all think of this? As long as my home and family pass inspection, we are going to get a 16 year old from China for the upcoming school year. We have a three bedroom house with three kids. Two share a room, and Jake would share a room with this child.
We did talk with the kids before I made the phone call and filled out the forms, and they are all excited to get him. He loves to do everything we love to do and I will get to see what it is like to have a teenager since mine will be one next year.
We literally live down the street from the school and Jake will be able to walk with him so that will not be an issue since the middle school and highschool are connected. BUT her will be coming here on the 28th of this month. That is coming fast. I have been thinking about this, but it is different when it becomes real. What do you all think? Any advice?

Is it through a student exchange / host program? We've hosted several students over the years (always for the full school year) and have always enjoyed it -- they learn a lot, and we learn even more!!! You just have to make sure that the rules and regs for your house are known upfront, and allow for a bit of adjustment time. The kids in the program were all between 12-18 upon arrival here. We would still be hosting, but we already have two children sharing each of the larger rooms, so we have no space left!!!

Kara,
It is through an exchange program, but he is arriving so quickly that we won't have the bedroom set up and he will have to sleep in the family room for a while. But it is private and on the other end of the house as well as has an exit off of that same room. So I am sure that will be ok. He seems nice from his bio and looks innocent enough. So we will see. Friday is our home visit so pray for us!!!!!! Not that we get him, but that the right decision be made.

Tracy - that sounds like a lot of fun. It would be a good chance to open the world up for your kids.
Kylie / Kath - I can get home and back in 40 minutes and then work over a few, but that would be it. I have asked to do that because I forgot a paper at home that needs mailed or had to leave money for fuel That would double the gas money. And, as far as teens go - noone nearby that I would leave her with, and there is a mind set in the community that 11-going-on-12 is old enough. I know this because when I was looking a few years ago, no one thought BigBee needed someone. I have a year, there may be someone in one of the towns that would work out that I just haven't thought of.
We went to a Scrappers ball game last night. They are a minor league team for the Cleveland Indians. It was supposed to be Girl Scout night but it was POORLY attended. There was supposed to be a drawing for 'jobs' and we needed to sign up by 5:15. Gates opened at 5! So did the floodgates, it rained and rained. There were no other scouts there and when I asked at the fan desk they knew NOTHING. After taking some ribbing from the family and wondering if I should have checked if it was cancelled, another troop came up to us since DeeDee was in uniform. So, I asked for someone from upstairs to come down and he apologized and asked DeeDee what job she wanted so she named the only one that she wanted to win - Jr Announcer. She called the players names for the bottom of the second inning. She was on the PA, and the jumbotron and everything! It was too neat. The other troop did the 7th inning stretch and I swear there wasn't anyone else there. Besides the lack of attendance and communication, it raining and the game was delayed almost two hours. We stayed, figuring they'd get at least 2 innings in before 11. Then, BigBee and I decided to bid on a game jersey for charity. Opening bid was $60 but he said he'd put up 1/2 of it and I said I'd go no higher than that and it looks like we won it. Now, for the guy to do well in the majors. We stayed for the whole game, watched fireworks (in the rain) in the parking lot and were home by midnight but boy-o-boy am I feeling it now.
Moral of the story? Wear your scout uniform. Ask questions. And, after announcing a game in front of THOUSANDS of strangers - why be nervous?
DeeDee has at least 15 shirts, including 4-5 news ones and is planning on doing the fashion bug modeling show. They pick out outfits for the girls (and adults) so that every outfit in the store is worn and then you get 40% off any purchase made that day whether they wore it or not. The nice thing is you can 'hold' outfits that won't be worn so that they don't run out of the size you want. And, they used to lay them away, but I don't know if that changed or not. We try to get a nice dress for the Christmas concerts that way.
BigBee likes camp, but learned that the kitchen is HARD work and that parents will yell at you. He received a bad evaluation the other day. His side was 'we didn't help a kid who didn't ask for help so his mom complained about that d*rk and the kid with glasses' Apparently she said d*rk on the eval form. Which dilutes her complaint about how teenagers treated her son just a smidge.

We have done Fashion Bug model shows and it is great because of that nice discount they give you. Kohls will also do shows, but they don't give you anything. At least they didn't the one time we did use them. We didn't use them again because while they are giving you the outfits to use, they are getting free advertising and so it is only polite for them to give some sort of discount for people who go there because of that show.
I think Marshalls also does the same thing, but only 15% off.

I hope you can get something worked out. Does a teen live around you close that could do it and not charge an arm and a leg? I'm amazed at what kids get for babysitting now-days. 
They messed up Ty's schedule! Of course I never received the mailing telling me that Ty made it into the Advanced placement World History class either. I got a phone call telling me it passed the test for the AP program. Anyway it's not on his schedule so I called the school and I'm waiting for a call from them today but I'm not holding my breath. I'll call back in the morning if I don't get a call tonight. The primary reason I'm concerned is that Ty has spent the last month and a half reading the Oddessy - the summer reading requirement for the AP world history/honors English block, which if he's not going to be taking the block he would not have had to read, BUT he would have had to read another required book. Well we'll see if they call me and can change it - if not, well he's got a week to locate, read, and make the notes on a completely different book.
