That is good, Erick sounds very wise. I am not meaning to say people will, but I have seen stinks raised over lesser issues, which is wrong, but the way things are.

Lisa, I know you must do what you think is right, but, have you worried this might get you voted out? I am not saying that should be a factor just wondering if that has entered you thoughts. Does it matter if the others in the congergation have a different view? Do you think that they hold the view very strongly, strong enough to cause division?

I haven't worried about it. I don't think they would vote us out anyway. Erick has a board meeting next week, and he's going to talk to the board about it and get their perspective.

I'm still wondering who had a camera during Jesus' earthly ministry. Someone email me a JPG.

I'd proceed very carefully, we moved a reading lamp and caused all kinds of trouble. I wouldn't want such a picture personally but there are those who are, no doubt, very attached to it and it will cause you all kind of problems if it suddenly disappears. I like the idea of using it as sermon material as long as you're sensitive to the feelings of some of your congregation.

Wisdom should be used when figuring out what are the "big things" to "rock the boat" about. Is this a salvation issue? Is this a sin issue (actually causing sin right now?)?

The people need to learn to trust your husband. Changes that aren't life/death oriented are usually not wise at first. What are the things causing dissension? (which would then affect your witness to the community) What are the things that could be done to reach out to the community? Those are the kinds of changes that are probably wiser.

A picture is a "cultural" type of thing. For your husband to share his personal convictions on pictures, portrayals of Jesus is one way to slowly address the issue while not creating an issue that really doesn't affect someone's salvation. There are lots of convictions, personal pet peeves, etc. when you come into a church - it is hard not to let them get to you.

Oh - and any safety issues that should be addressed (mold, electricity, risk-factors with child care, etc.) Those are the areas that might be more wisely addressed.

As far as making changes - my husband would say a minimum of 1 year and 3-5 years to really be trusted. God is bigger than "time lines" but this sounds pretty minimal in the big scope of ministry. I think I would try to find out why the individuals enjoy this picture so much and pray for God to help you love these people - even if you don't agree with them. You know - like we put up with "uncle Jon" every Christmas because we love him...even if we don't agree with everything he stands for. Love influences more than "correction" at this level of question.

Replace it with a picture of a black Jesus!

What? The Jewish Jesus you didn't like?

Heh. My grandmother had that picture of Jesus (the Roman one). In my life I think I've only ever seen one depiction of Jesus that actually looked Jewish.

I think RC had a lot of wisdom about taking it slow and easy on the changes. But if you really feel that strongly about the second commandment thing - and to be honest, I don't really see it, but if you really feel that strongly about it then it would be a violation of your conscience to keep it up there so you can't really do that. If that's the case, maybe moving it to another location as you suggested would be the most viable solution.

If He was depicted as actually looking like 1 first century Jew. And not a blonde, blue eyed boy from Kentucky.

My point was more to Cloak who was all shocked that people wouldn't want a picture of Jesus on display. My point to him is that we do not have any pictures of Jesus, so it's a bit naive to be shocked when people don't want a fake representation/icon displayed.

I have not had time to read all of this thread, but I can tell you it did not go well at my church when the pastor moved the Jesus picture. I personally did not like the picture, but a lot of people did. I heard comments of "They took Jesus out of His church" & "Jesus is no longer here". We all know that these statements are not true. but you can not tell that to some of the people. Good luck that you don't have any problems if you do move the picture.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Ruth. Did anyone leave the church over it?

It is amazing how much idolatry can creep into the church. Be it a picture, a version of the bible, a style of worship, order of worship, and so on. We take our mental picture of how things should be and have them supercede the bible. Of course, the specific things the bible commands must be followed. But too often we take our personal prefrences and make them gospel truth.

Well a news flash, was watchimg a documentry about a guy who ate at McDonallds three times a day, well anyway they did a study in schools with either first, or second graders in NYC, none of the kids knew who the picture of Jesus was, but they knew the Wendy's logo, and who Ronald McDonald was, so you know?

Yeah, it was funny, and scary. I mean in childrens SS, I use those little paper visual aids of Jesus on the felt board, and Jesus coloring sheets, most children in my Bible Belt know a piture of Jesus. I have sticky keys, so forgive misspellings. If the people have to have the light turned on before they can worship, then I do see a problem though.

Maybe the picture is what someone invisioned him in the glorified state. Who knows maybe he did look that way, that is why he was not recognized ( I guess semi-glorified state)

Have the Pastor and his leadership board put the matter on the table at their next business meeting, vote on the subject, and carry it out as a board decision.

That's what leaders do. If a person stops attending church because of a picture I'd prob. tend to think they weren't meant to be there anyhow.

The business meeting was postponed until next Sunday, as there were a couple of board members that weren't there. I'll keep you posted.

I just hope the board members are not being absent and trying to stall a vote. Unfortunately, although really a bad thing to do, I have heard tell of it several times in the past.

Yes, but hopefully they are men/ woman enough not to run and face the vote. Though I do not 100% agree, or disagree with Lisa and Husband views. They have to live their conviction no matter the cost. I know that sounds double-minded, about agreeing -disagreeing it is just, I do not see a problem with pictures of the Lord; but on the on the other hand, I have been on these boars for a long-time and lisa and her husband seem really balnaced in what they believe. The must see a problem with the way these people ( some) are acting during worship.

well, placing the matter up for a vote in that manner sounds like the best idea. That way, you deflect foul balls before they fly out of left field.

Have the sanctuary repainted and don't hang it back up.

I wouldn't vote, 'cause if it goes the other way, you have no options.

Just kidding here: How about a 'staged' theft and the only thing they took was................ just kidding!!!
