SonInMe1 -> RE: Pointless ... utterly pointless ... (7/20/2008 5:11:04 PM)

I am more of a ractionary so I don't originate too many threads.....though many cruise through what may be defined as my mind. Fortunatly, I keep those...to myself.

I do keep calandral records and I think it was 1983 in June. The last time I was wrong.

I am also a very modest person. Handsome. Successful. Loved by millions.

Actually, if you check again, you'll find it was May 1983, not June, the last time you were wrong.

Looks like he'll have to update that one...

Hmmmm.

That stinks is when it's a good question and I want to answer, but then I see who posted it and choose to not post in it in order to not encourage them in their quest. [8|]

It wouldn't be so bad but they admitted that most of the time they don't even go back to the threads they started. (admitted in the community, not a PM so I'm not saying anything that wasn't public)

deliveredarling -> RE: Pointless ... utterly pointless ... (7/21/2008 7:30:41 AM)

Why would somebody post an interesting topic and then not return to it? Didn't they post it because they had questions or maybe some thoughts they wanted to "iron" out? Am I missing the points of these forums?

Is it just me, or do you think a number of Threads started here have no point or purpose at all?

Like this one for instance.

[8|] [&o] we are supposed to make a point?

To get people talking? To start conversations? Maybe they just like seeing their name all over the place as the thread starter.

Don't get me wrong - 99.9% of people that post new threads care about the answers. They return and read, even if they don't post again (and thus have people accuse them of being a post-and-run).

mvic -> RE: Pointless ... utterly pointless ... (7/21/2008 10:36:51 AM)

I find it really annoying when someone starts a thread then doesn't come back to it. On several occasions I contributed at length to questions asked in the opening thread, yet I don't know whether the starter has seen or agreed with the views expressed by myself or others.

What was it Jesus said about seeds planted on rocky ground, amongst thorns, on good ground etc ...?

And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, "Behold, the sower went out to sow; and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up. "Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. "But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. "Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. "And others fell on the good soil and *yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. (Matthew 13:3-8)

Thanx Berian Aardvark.

I like your Ronald Reagan quote!

Best wishes.

You are not missing the point. I think of forums as written conversation.

I agree. There are very few members who start thread and never return, even if they don't sign back on. I think some forget they posted here.

I think you have to realise that not everyone holds your strong convictions regarding politeness and manners and you will be disappointed with people from time-to-time (including and especially Christians).

In all fairness however, not everyone perhaps realises that they are expected to reply because on many threads people just pop in and post a reply and pop right back out again and either forget to return or get caught up with another more interesting or important thread to them. There are loads of us on-site who don't get replies when we have posted on other people's threads. It is one of these things unfortunately. However, it is a shame if you have gone to some length to respond and noone has acknowledged you for it. Rather than get upset - why don't you PM them to gently prod them to remember to respond and that way you may find out it is a genuine error (hopefully).

When posting - either a new thread or answering threads, I just remember that I am not doing it for me (although I do enjoy posting) - first and foremost, I'm doing it to try and help or encourage another and hopefully to glorify God. That way I don't expect too much and I'm not disappointed if what you have explained happens.

More interesting or important than mine?

Now I'm really hurt !!!

I pick C- they start a thread, don't automatically subscribe, and then can't find it again later...

I also think the OP is singling out just post starters! What about the people who respond and their responses are pointless... utterly pointless... and misspelled... and gramatically horrific... and one paragraph- composed of 750 sentences... need I go on???

Can't forget punctuation optional...

I don't know how to subscribe. I somehow managed to do 11 on my first day but haven't a clue how I managed that or what it meant online at the time! [sm=hammerhead.gif]

Also, I don't read really long posts (or I only read a part and lose interest cos it's hard to read long posts online and I end up squinting my eyes). I also find I get bored if I read a long post (and I'm not referring mvic's long posts). To tell the truth mvic - I have never seen a long post typed by you. Yours tend to be okay length-wise but some posters that you see type reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly long posts. [:(]

I try to keep mine shortish for the same reasons mentioned above 'cos I know people won't want to read them if they are too long.

Go to My Profile, scroll down to Posting Preference, select Always Subscribe to threads when I post.

I understand about long posts (even though I do tend to long posts myself) and, believe it or not, even try to keep mine short.

BJinWA -> RE: Pointless ... utterly pointless ... (7/21/2008 3:08:27 PM)

pointless or not, i am enjoying this thread........to answer your original question

mvic -> RE: Pointless ... utterly pointless ... (7/21/2008 5:41:37 PM)

Hi Little 1,

I agree with you that long posts are very difficult to read; especially those with no paragraphs (all one long bit) and typed in capitals.

I don't mind Berian Aardvark's posts because he is very knowledgeable and I learn a lot from him.

The reason that my posts are somewhat short is because I have the short attention span of a goldfish and can't concentrate too long. I start a sentence and then

Thanks Tim. Appreciated. I think I will give it a miss for now because I post so much that my computer would be like spagetti junction if I subscribed to all my posts. However, something this thread has taught me is that perhaps I should slow down posting-wise and post less and try and catch up on any I may be missing 'cos I don't want to upset anyone unintentionally. Perhaps then I could subscribe without giving my computer a fright!

Thanks for a good thread mvic and I agree with you re: BA's posts: "they are sound as a pound" as we would say in the UK.

That's not good for an author. [8D]

We used to be able to say "sound as a dollar" (and have it understood as a good thing).

Sound as a pound has much better alliteration.

Thanks for the compliments, I now need to replace my entire hat collection as they no longer fit. [sm=crystreams.gif][sm=cool.gif]

Good to see not a lot has changed [:D]

Ecclesiastes ch. 1
1 The words of the spokesman, the son of David and the king in Jerusalem. 2 "Absolutely pointless!" says the spokesman. "Absolutely pointless! Everything is pointless."

(Hmmm...the window won't let me post left to right so the Hebrew is mirror image, sorry about that.)

The word translated Vanity is, in Hebrew, הבל / הבל hebel / hăbêl emptiness or vanity; figuratively something transitory and unsatisfactory.

It could even be translated soap bubbles. [;)]
