Anyone seen this yet? The trailer looks pretty good, but I read Plugged-In and they are saying it has no moral value. I love ABBA though. Any reviews?

Okay. Without giving away the whole movie: Morally, not great. The story is about a woman who slept w/three different men in a short span of time twenty years ago and ended up pregnant. There's several spots where it's broadly sexual w/o being outright vulgar. There's a scene with two gay men hugging at the end. But, the music, general story line, scenery and acting are fabulous! I laughed, cringed at a couple of spots and almost teared up at the end. As someone who messed up royally in my youth but made the best of it and moved on with my life, I guess I related to Meryl Streep's character and that's what made me enjoy this movie, along with the ABBA songs and seeing "older" women like me relive a little of their glory days...

I'm going to the movie later today. I saw Mama Mia on the stage about 5 years ago and adored it. The singing and dancing are fabulous. I just hope Meryl Streep doesn't ruin it by singing....I don't think she can...the lead character in Toronto was a fabulous singer. It is a happy movie, full of hope for the future and about, in a sense, personal redemption. Not a Christian redemption though. Mom made mistake 25 years earlier but in a sense has redeemed herself by doing a good job of raising her daughter alone. She is given the opportunity to "make it right". It is about forgiveness on many levels. There is some poor language in this film. If you are from the generation when ABBA was popular I think you'll think it fun. Overall it is happy and upbeat, you'll want to sing and dance! A fun, piece of fluff! Sudden

Just saw Mama Mia. It was sweet. Meryl Streep did her own singing as did the other actors in this fun movie. While the singing was not wonderful it was respectable in that they hit the right notes. The young girl who played Sophie was by far the best singer- a delight. I'd have love to have seen Cher play the part of Donna. The role I think would have suited her voice beautifully. The scenery is lovely and the "love" of Sophie's "dads" for her is delightful and refreshing. A sweet, sweet, note. Sudden

I can't wait to see this one. Hubby agreed to take me to this one. I love musicals and I love Meryl Streep. I did remember her singing in Postcards from the Edge years ago so I know she can sing.

I saw it with my wife. It was interesting to hear all the laughter and people singing along with the music. Although it is definitely a chick flick, I will that I enjoyed it as much as my wife did. We bought the sound track and she keeps playing it over and over in her car.

It is a fun movie. Both Mrs. K and I enjoyed it. She wants to see it again. The music was good, though some of the actors weren't the best singers.

I didn't like it the acting. The older actresses were WAY to energetic for me. I don't know any people that age who act that way; running and jumping around. Granted it was a musical, but that just got under my skin.

Horrible movie, imo. Love me some ABBA music and discovered "Lay All Your Love On Me" because of it, but I stand on my opinion that it was just bad. Such FORCED merriment.

The movie has been getting raving reviews, basically saying that while it has a bizarre plot and awkwardly put together, that the songs themselves make this a real "feel good" movie instead!

Haven't seen it yet, as in a moral movie, unfortunatly doesnt sell as much as it once did in Hollywood (however that was when the catholic church once had pull in how movies were made) If you like musicals and like Beatles music see Across the Universe, It manages to capture the emotion of the times, Ive watched it over 10 times already

Comparing the Beatles to ABBA is comparing apples and oranges.

Such FORCED merriment Um, no it was not. They did it to honor ABBA. They did it b/c they wanted too. quote:
The ladies were WAY too energetic for me Isn't that what makes a good musical? So far it has exceeded TRIPLE the movie budget (in total.) The budget was $52 M.

I don't see how a movie with Colin Firth in it could be bad... Given how his character, um, ended the movie, I can! LOL...no, I liked the movie. But just so you know, Where the Truth Lies may not be a bad movie, but it is pornographic, so if that makes a movie bad, then he did make one. Of course, when you've been to the touring musical (March 2007), and you've seen the story (I was about to say a few choice words from my seat -- my voice teacher and another student wanted me to attend!) on stage, and you've seen the parts that would make Dr. Laura angry, you have made your mind it's a big NO. That's why I refuse to see it. Besides, we don't have movie theatres here -- you have to drive 50 miles to the movies from here.

Ok, I went and seen it today. I guess it wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be but still ok. I found it very interesting that all the actors and actresses did their own singing. The movie is cheesy for sure, but if you like ABBA then you might just indeed like it. I am going to stick my original ABBA CD however.

I enjoyed it although I laughed everytime Pierce Brosnan tried to sing. The acting I thought was very good because they played it intentionally with the camp factor. If they played it totally straight (no, not sexually but acting wise) the movie would have been ridiculous. You can't launch into song and dance (especially this music) and play it like Hamlet. I think Meryl Streep was great (like that's a surprise) and really enjoyed the female leads. I liked the guys but they were NOT musical... so many singing actors and they couldn't get one? Dennis Quaid? Kevin Bacon? there are a lot of them that sing.... It was definitely a feel good movie.... the twist at the end certainly not my preference but it fit the overall arc of the movie.

Comparing the Beatles to ABBA is comparing apples and oranges. IMHO, comparing the Beatles to ABBA is like comparing apples to bubble gum. I have not seen the movie yet because someone in the congregation said that within the plot is the fact that the daughter wants to be given away in marriage by the father, and that there are three possible fathers of the bride because of the mother's indiscretions. Sylvia has mentioned that she would like to see the movie. Can someone clear this up?

Clear it up? That's the main plot--her mom doesn't know who her father is, she reads her mom's diary to find out and realizes there are three possibilities, so she secretly invites them all to her wedding, figuring she'll 'just know' when she sees the right one.
