christsstar -> reading death notices/obits? (7/18/2008 11:34:53 AM)

Do you ever read through the death notices?

I've been waiting for a specific one to be printed and have perused some of the others that have caught my attention. Some of them I think, "This would've been a REALLY cool person to know....."

cherish405 -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/21/2008 11:10:51 AM)

On occasion, I have. There have been some high profile deaths and sometimes I look to see what their friends and family have said about them. How they honour them.

Sometimes it's a young baby/child or multiple family members, and you just think, "How sad".

I think what saddens me most though is those that are openly into freemasonry. They call for their 'brothers' to come to the funeral. I have had family members who have been freemasons and they think they're going to heaven, but they're not. [&o][:(]

Any who are led astray make me very sad as well.

.... I don't normally get the newspaper....

.... but yeah.... I do when I read it.

Is that weird?

My mom used to read them to see who was dying that was her same age... [&:]

sunshine4God -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/21/2008 11:26:50 PM)

I don't read them daily but my Mom does since she is a home health aide,and always likes seeing if any of her patients have died.

cherish405 -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/22/2008 10:07:07 AM)

We don't get the paper every day either, but for some reason I end up looking at the hatched, matched and dispatched sometimes. (Births, engagements and deaths).

I get sad when I know that the person isn't a believer.

awed -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/22/2008 2:55:26 PM)

At my age now I check often to see if I know anyone or the children of those who have passed. I would hate to not attend a visitation or something because I didn't know of the passing. I usually check online, as I don't get the daily newspaper, but the 2 times a week paper that I proof pages for has an obit page too so, yeah, I check for the reasons I listed.

JimboFletch -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/22/2008 3:00:05 PM)

I check the obits on Yahoo and the NY Times sites most mornings before I start work. It's how I learned today that Estelle Getty, the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls" died at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at age 84.
[:(]

christsstar -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/22/2008 3:01:42 PM)

Estelle Getty died????? Oh. How sad. I liked her. (I usually get NY Times alerts for celebrity death passings.)

JimboFletch -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/22/2008 3:02:46 PM)

This time Yahoo beat NYT, which doesn't update as often.

christsstar -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/22/2008 3:05:29 PM)

I saw that. I found it on google news.

karlie -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/22/2008 3:11:33 PM)

I skim through the names in our local paper just to see if I know anyone. But, I don't read the details unless I did know them.

Sounds like me.

stamper_ben -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/25/2008 1:21:20 PM)

If I see my photo I'll read the obit.

Me too.

My paper that is, not Karlie's paper.

MissGizmo -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/26/2008 11:45:57 PM)

Having grown up around a funeral home makes me interested to see who has left this world. I do not take the paper, but can read it on line every day.

thedivabrat -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/26/2008 11:56:40 PM)

I used to laugh at my mother because she always read the obits--now I am of a certain age-like old -and I read them. There are occasionally some pretty funny things written--just recently in the local paper there was one that said "He was loved by his family but he was a royal pain in the butt".

Annie64 -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/27/2008 4:17:44 AM)

I look through them if I have a newspaper. I don't read them thoroughly unless I find one that looks interesting. Sometimes I pray for the families, especially if it was a young person.

Karaboo2 -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/27/2008 4:53:41 PM)

My great-grandfather used to read them to see if any of his old buddies had passed away. But when he closed the paper, he would always make a comment to the effect of "Good ... my name's not in there yet ... must still be a good time to be alive"

garsyt -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/27/2008 9:52:33 PM)

Occasionally I'll read the obits if I pick up a paper or think about catching them on-line.

What's really sad is when you read this really glowing obit about someone you know and you wonder if the author of it had any idea who the person really was. I read one one time that portrayed this person as a pillar of the community, a man of God, active in his church and community, a friend to all, and loved by all who knew him. [&:] I wondered if the person who wrote this didn't make a mistake and think they were writing about someone else! I lived next door to this man for a few years and he was a cantankerous, grumpy, irritating old busybody that cussed at my kids if they left toys laying out in OUR yard! He grumped every time our yard wasn't mowed the same day his was (we rented and the mowing was the rental companies responsibility). I mean I felt bad when the guy died, but his glowing obit did NOT at all tell the truth, unless he was a completely different person before we moved into the neighborhood. Seriously I didn't think I was that horrible a neighbor!

Blessings,

Garsy

Isn't it odd that people die in alphabetical order?

momma_bee -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/29/2008 4:11:23 PM)

I read them

Every day

Every local paper

And I have since I was YOUNGER (I'm still feeling young today)

In fact, I am on the computer right now looking for information on a dear woman who passed last night.

I can get annoyed by some of the descriptions. The ones that stick out are the 'witness one last time' ones. I read one that was 'Journeyed to her heavenly home where she was welcomed into the arms of Jesus and her beloved husband.'

I joke that Poppa is NOT allowed to say anything like that. Although, we have joked 'finally tried sky diving - once'

I have seen survived by their grown child and the child's pet.

But, I feel awful when I read about some folks around here. Landed on Omaha Beach 6/6/44. Survived the Bataan Death March. Flew with this or that person on X sucessful missions. Served under this General or in these churches. So many wonderful stories that I will never hear....

tanglin -> RE: reading death notices/obits? (7/30/2008 6:35:15 AM)

I've followed in my mom's footsteps and have started reading them too. On our papers, sometimes someone will list the names of everyone in that 4-generation family left behind and I go through it to see if there's someone I might know.
