ORIGINAL: WesP Inanimate objects themselves can do nothing to sway the beliefs of an individual, so what effect would controlling a block of wood have? Neither Christains nor inanimate objects can be "demon-possessed". However, it would be most unwise and naive to believe, or promote the belief, that inanimate objects cannot be used and manipulated by evil spirits or Satan for their own ends. When the Antichrist (a Satan-possessed man) appears on this earth, he will create an image which will be animated --"power to give life unto the image of the beast" -- and which will also be worshipped. (Rev. 12:15). This is the most outstanding example of Satan using inanimate objects for his own ends. And there could be numerous other examples provided by those who practice witchcraft and shamanism. Therefore, beware that you do not dismiss the workings of evil spirits too lightly.

Well spoken Ezra. I fully agree. quote:
Coming in here with this kind of judging attitude will get you much sarcasm and no sympathy. Thanks for sharing! I know, I've been reading since 1999 and posting since around 2000 (new username in 2005 during a changeover). You also mistook my statement the wrong way. It happens often to everyone on forums, though as of late the sarcasm has risen a few notches. It rises and falls over the years. The only judgment is that which you perceived. None was intended. If the statement is true, then it is true on its own merit regardless of perceived tone. Holding on to a belief without evaluating experiences and outside input that may have a bearing on the validity of a belief is foolish. That's not a judgment, that's just a fact of life. If the belief can be reconciled to outside data -- great. If not, it would be wise to re-evaluate.

Under normal circumstances, I would agree with this. If an interpretation or belief flies in the face of common and easily witnessed experience, it is absolutely foolish to continue in it. However, what's being discussed here is so subjective, so uncommon and lacking witnesses, documentation or objectivity, that to change a belief on someone else's subjective experience would, IMHO, be far more foolish.

I agree With the Lioness. I would think that totem poles uprooting and doing the electric slide would be a rather normal occurrence.

Okay, let me give a response for the "other side", I'll call it, even though we're all on the same side. I'll start with this: Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God. (Leviticus 26:1) Idols are forbidden...Why?? The people believed there was a power behind the idols. And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards. (Isaiah 19:3) Seek to the idols...Why?? They're looking for answers and believe there's a power to respond to them there. And there was a power at work. I note Jannes and Jambres of Egypt who worshipped the gods the idols of Egypt represented. Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods. (Exodus 7:11-12) Moreover the workers with familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD. (2 Kings 23:24) For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens. (1 Chronicles 16:26) I think there is plenty of reason to think that a _power_ was indeed associated with the idols and getting rid of the idols was a priority--not just a fanatical destroying of statues but to rid the land of a place and an object where something other than God could be worshipped. Idolatry was an interaction with evil spirits. Somewhere I heard there is a New Testament example of destroying objects to be rid of demonic influence. Here's the reference: Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. (Acts 19:19) So based on the nature of idolatry, a demonic nature, I'm not as sure as some of you that no object would be a focus of demons to attempt to bring their influence into our lives. Ouija boards, D&D manuals, witchcraft spell books---I'd get rid of 'em.

As to the question of a demon possessing an object, it appears that demons have been in Scripture _associated_ with objects.

As to the question of a demon possessing an object, it appears that demons have been in Scripture _associated_ with objects. But those objects were idols like you said. They were intentionally portals for what some thought were gods, some knew were demons, etc. Yes, and I've heard the extreme end where some that I knew were afraid of, for example, a little statue of an owl because that seemed like something a demon might like--which seems ridiculous to me. There are practitioners who associate powers and even demons with objects even today---or so I've heard.

I think this is like many things. We need balance. Don't look for a demon in everything and don't be oblivious to demonic reality. And I have to restate that there is a difference between a demon being able to manipulate a physical object and actually possessing and "sticking" to said object. I can't think of anywhere in Scripture where Jesus or Paul said we needed to "pray" demons out of the chair we bought at the market.

Re: OP - Demons cannot possess a Christian who is born of God's Spirit but they can 'oppress' a Christian. The Bible warns us not to give the devil a foothold and by that it means to be on our guard and be careful not to fall into sinful habits or situations which the devil and his angels (demons) can use against us by condemning and oppressing us regarding. Many sincere and Godly Christians have faced attacks in their minds and bodies which came as a direct result of the devil's activity. One such Biblical example was Job who was a 'righteous man'. However, in the case of Job, the devil could not touch Job's life without first seeking God's permission and so such activity is limited by God's authority as to whether He will permit it in the life of the believer who is walking with God. I once knew a girl who claimed to be a Christian. One night, a friend of mine was in her home and she prayed over him and her voice completely changed to that of a very deep male voice. My friend was really scared by this and never went near her again (understandably because he was a new Christian at the time and very frightened by this experience). The same woman is very much 'in the world' to this day. She lives a life of drugs, drink and debauchery. It is sad but this is true. I used to wonder how she could attend Christian meetings and sing Christian songs and choruses if she was demon possessed? Perhaps it was because the church she attended was founded by a pastor who was not right with God and his followers were much the same (they are ALL in the world today). I often wondered about this and find it upsetting and confusing thinking about it.

I also believe that a born-again believer cannot be possessed by a demon because the Holy Spirit is dwelling in them. An inanimate object also cannot be possessed by a demon. However, what are we to do with inanimate objects that is suspected to have been made/used/consecrated specifically for demonic purposes that are brought to our house? My pastor back in CA a few years ago had bought a house for his growing family. Our college group met at his house on a weekly basis for bible study. About 6 months into living there right when he was about to go on his morning jog, he found what looked like organs (heart, liver, kidneys) of a small animal left in a neat little triangle in front of his door step, on two separate occasions. He at first thought it might be a cat that had just devoured a bird and left parts of it on his property, but they were washed clean, with no trace of blood or tissue damage. He then thought it may be a prank by some kids in the neighborhood, or it could be some weirdo putting some kind of hex on his household. What was strange was that no other animals were attracted to it. One would think some carnivorous bird like a crow, or a stray cat would come and eat it up, or it would have flies and ants...but it was left undisturbed. Either way, he prayed over his household for the Lord's peace just in case and then called the cops to report these weird occurrences. Nothing obscure happened during those times. It was just weird and creepy. I don't remember what he actually did with those animal parts though.

This is the last comment I'll be making on the comment on my comment, as this portion of the discussion is off topic. Please do not read into my statement that I think that anyone who disagrees with me is foolish. I did not say that. If I did, I would have been blunt about it and outright said that. What I did say was that anyone, myself included, who does not re-evaluate when new information is available, may be foolish. quote:

A fine example of evaluation done and accounted for. Might not be as deep as it could have been, but sometimes deeper evaluation is better left for the scarier folders in Theology.

Ok I wasn't going to get involved however this is the truth. Read Kings when Saul was King over Israel and disobeyed God.( He forced Samuel the prophet to obey's God command and to kill the king of the land. Which brought blood upon his hands.) Anyhow Saul was annointed by God, (Even David claimed this and would not kill Saul when he had the chance.) BUT God allowed Saul to be *bothered* by a spirit which only could be soothed by the soon to be King David (in which Saul's envy grew, that of course was caused by the bad spirit.) But notiiced it said was ***Bothered*** not indwelled. An evil spirit can bother one, but can not indwell a believer, because darkness and light can not dwell together. I believe if God allows an evil spirit to bother one it is mainly for correction, as it is stated in the Gospels He will not let go not one hair on your head to the enemy. He tried Job and doubly blessed him as the Evil spirit tempted him, and we all know today that scripture wards off the devil as well as the name of Jesus, the name above all. Inamanate objects are just that, they have no power, only the power you want to give them, sort of like folks who wear a cross. Who holds your power? CRH

state all you want your own interpretations, but when experience trumps an interpretation of what the Bible says or does not say, we're in danger of being extremely foolish. Pretty blunt, I think. Experience trumps nothing in the bible. That is why the bible tells us that in the end the elect would be deceived if that was possible.
