Well, ya just gotta understand! When I lived in Mississippi, my fourth grade class was taken on a tour of the CocaCola factory in 1959, and I learned that Coke was first made in the South, in 1884, by John Stith Pemberton, a druggist from Columbus, Georgia. Therefore, every pop from then on was coke.
But 22 years earlier (1866) Vernor's was created by James Vernor, a Detroit pharmacist.

And in Michigan we called it POP!!!

Interesting! Was Vernor's a flavored drink? Does Michigan (or anyone else) still have a drink that is related? What is it?

Does anyone drink Moxie?

It is made in Maine (Mrs. Kerrlaw's home state) and her mother loved it.

It is probably the worst drink I ever tasted.

Vernor's WAS the ginger ale to end all ginger ales. It was aged in oak burbon barrels (they can only be used once for burbon) and it is much stronger than Canada Dry or Schwepps. (they own it now) Since Cadburry Schwepps bought the brand in the late 80s and closed the Detroit plant, it is not the same. They still claim to use oak barrels but I have my doubts. At least it is not the burbon barrels which are charred on the inside. You could taste a bit of the smoky char and a bit of the burbon, along with a ginger bouquet that, if you inhale before drinking, will send most into a coughing fit.

We used to nickname Vernor's "The Other Detroit River Water." "Detroit River Water" was Stroh's beer. Neither are made in Michigan anymore.

The company that makes Kleenex brand, as well as the company that makes Band-aid bandages, have fought hard legal battles to make sure that "Kleenex" does not become the generic name for disposable tissues and that "Band-aid" does not becoem the generic name for elastic bandages.

Just a side note, remember that song "Do They Know Its Christmas?" by Band Aid? Did you know that the reason why they never re-released it is because Johnson and Johnson owns the copyright to the name Band Aid, and the group had a six month waiver that the comany would not renew at all? Just a fun tid-bit.

I'm from Michigan, we call it pop (gets me some strange looks out here in Phoenix), Vernors is too strong for me but Dh likes it, and I would LOVE to find someone out here who plays Euchre! Most people look at me like I'm nuts whenever I mention it.

Yay Euchre!

"He who hesitates is a dirty passer!"
"Next!"

If you can't find a 4-some, teach someone (like your kids) the game.

We don't have kids, otherwise I would.
I discovered during college that while people from Ohio play Euchre, some of the finer points of the game are different from what I used- no Farmer's Hand or partner's best, no st*ck the dealer, and using a 4 and 6 to keep score instead of a pair of 5's.

I think we need to start another thread discussing Euchre, lest we veer this thread even further off topic.

Coke.

"Bring me a coke."

"What kind do you want?"

"Orange."

Yep. I'm a Texan, and everything's a Coke.

"What kind of Coke?'

"Um...Dr. Pepper coke. Or no, a Sprite coke."

Now that I live in Indianapolis, I call it pop. But I have lived in different places and called it different things. It sounds strange now to call it soda. When I lived in Georgia, it sounded normal. I remember my mom, in Virginia, calling it soda pop.

Now I can imagine it now. I want a Pepsi coke!

Ah, yes. When I drink colas, I only do the Pepsi cokes, too. I don't do Coke cokes.

I don't like Coke cokes, either (and I've lived where they were called that, too, in Georgia, if I remember right). I like the Dr. Pepper ones!
