I nursed Luke for the first five months of my preganancy with Kenna. I planned on nursing all the way through, but with him still being so young and my working and pumping, my supply dwindled to next to nothing and we ended up weaning. Since Mary's older and not depending on your milk for full-time nourishment you'll probably have better luck than I did.

I never tandum nursed, but wanted to every time. I however have nursed during pregnancies a few times...all mine stopped nursing on their own before the next baby came (except my first, but that was a very different situation)

Oh good! I thought there were a few ladies who had nursed during pregnancy but I couldn't remember!!

Do you remember in your first trimester did nursing become really painful again? I haven't noticed a whole lot of breast tenderness when I'm not nursing but for a couple weeks it was *very* painful and now especially on my right side it is very painful when she latches on. I am hoping this it just normal first trimester breast soreness but wanted to make sure.

Also, how exactly did nursing work once your belly took over your lap? I know some woman still have a lap in their 3rd trimester but with Mary I sure didn't and I don't expect this one to be any different. I am having a hard time imagining how Mary is going to be able to nurse unless she is sitting beside me...

YES...after that first trimester it gets better though. It was so painful at times that it would make me cry...but I held out because I completely believe in babies self weaning.

that is when Emma decided she was done...don't be surprised if Mary does that too.
Jack just changed how he wanted to nurse...the position.

Oh I'm SO glad Sarah! Not glad that you had pain but glad that mine is normal!

Help me understand... I can't picture a baby nursing around a huge belly, was there still room for him to lay beside you? I have this picture in my head of her being sprawled across my belly scrambling trying to reach my nipple but sliding off the side... lol

I think I would be surprised it Mary decided to wean (not sad but surprised) because she is one determined little girl and *very* attached to nursing.

I couldn't nurse him in the chair anymore, I had to be on the couch. Our middle couch cushion from the back of the couch I would lay down on the middle seat, and he would lean on it mostly. He didn't seem to mind like Emma did. He actually stopped nursing because in one months time he got sick twice and couldn't breathe while nursing. So he went from still nursing 10 times a day or so to not nursing at all within a matter of just a few weeks. The first time was 5 days of torture (cause he wanted to nurse but couldn't because he couldn't breathe)...then for two weeks he was fine...then he got sick again (I think it was teething). That time it was 10 days of being sick and not able to breathe/nurse. After that he only nursed a few more weeks, maybe once a day, then stopped.

Dumb question...should I make my pumping schedule match Isaac's feeding schedule? He has a set schedule there at the NICU, will he want to keep that when he gets home? Right now he eats at 8,11,2,5. But then when I hold him during feeds (once everytime I'm there) I'll get off schedule by about 2 hours. This is probably a dumb question but humor me...I'm too tired to think! I was just thinking that mentally, maybe know that at the same time I am pumping he is getting fed might help.

well...its not exactly too set of a schedule. I TRY to go every three hours, but sometimes get thrown off, and I still am not getting in more than 6 pumpings a day, which may be part of my supply problem...but its SO hard with being on the road so much... Its usually something like 7am, 10-11(usually ends up more like 11 since I do it at work), then mid afternoon (3ish), then about 6 (after i get home and settled down, parts cleaned, etc)., then again mid evening, then about 11 or so (bedtime), then I wake up at 3am to pump again. I know thats 7 times, but usually I get off schedule and loose one somehow.

sounds like your schedule is all within an hour of his.....it should transfer over to his schedule easy enough when you start feeding him...just make sure you get as many pumpings in a day as he eats...at least that many.

Hmm, thanks Sarah. I guess we will see exactly how determined my little miss independent is, lol.

Prudent, did you notice that Regan (is that spelled right?) wanted to nurse more often after the baby was born? What was it like nursing two?

Erin, do you have an adapter for pumping in the car? A good handpump (I like the Avent Isis) would be great for pumping while on the road (if you are not driving of course).

I would just pump as much as I could and not worry about Isaac's schedule. Like Sarah said pump at least as many times a day as he eats. Now if pumping when you know he's eating helps you with pumping, that's another thing.

LOL! Thankfully the times I have had to pump in the car, it's been dark with not much traffic on the roads.

Erin, I'm so proud of you! You're doing a great job and are a wonderful mom!!

I know someone who is about 6 weeks pregnant and has a 9 month old and her OB told her not to continue nursing because it can cause preterm labor. Is that really a risk? She was about 2 1/2 weeks early with her first baby (went into labor on her own) but I don't consider that too early. She didn't have any problems with preterm labor with her first. Anyway, just wanting some input before I actually talk to her (I found out about this through a family member).

NO.....nipple stimulation does sometimes aid in bringing on contractions, but when your nipples are used to the stimulation (such as with bfing) it does not work the same. want me to find back up for that?

This is probably off topic, but could nipple stimulate when being intimate have caused my pre-term labor?

Thanks Sarah. Let me talk to her and if I need some backup, I'll PM you. I just googled it and read enough to talk to her inteligently about it. I know she was hoping to go at least a year and I hate to see her quit when she's 3 months away from a year old!

any form of whatever that "could" bring on labor won't work unless baby is ready for labor. They are finding more and more research to back up that it's all up to baby when you go into labor, not mom. Baby releases hormones that trigger the start of labor. So I would have to say that *if* it played any part it was because he was ready to come (in some way) and may have aided, but for sure wasn't the sole reason.

What Sarah said. Nipple stimulation only causes labor if the body is already ready to go.

Nursing around a baby belly....It really wasn't an issue for us. Reagan is long, and she just wrapped around my belly. We usually used a pillow, so that helped. I also nurse sitting indian style a lot, so I guess there was more leg room for her to lay on than if my legs were strait down.

quote:

Yes, she definitely wanted to nurse much more often when she saw Lincoln nursing so much. But she never got upset when I told her 'after baby' or just 'later.' Since I had an abundant supply after birth, and had very little milk when pregnant, she really renewed her interest in nursing.

Nursing two babies was just more nursing than nursing one baby. I wish I could tell you it was something very special or give you some tips. Since I was already nursing Reagan when the baby was born, it was just natural to continue nursing her.

Reagan was only nursing once daily when Lincoln was born, and I pretty much kept it at that. A few times after birth I let her nurse twice a day, but not often. Becomming a big sister is hard, and having most of mommy's time & attention spent on baby brother is a big adjustment. I just chose to try to keep as much of Reagan's life as normal as possible, and not push weaning before she was ready. She's a special girl, and I figured nursing a few minutes a day was easier to deal with than an upset toddler.

man.. I am soo upset now!.. I just found out today that work doesn't have a lactation room.. they said I could either use the bathroom or the executive shower.. "as it has a bench!!!"... am like REALLY now?.. how will I plug it in... ??? and if I use batteries.. how many will I go through a day? (I need to try that first before complaining.. just sounds odd)... AND... where will I store the baby milk? in the fridge where everyone stores thier lunch?.. what if someone tampers with it?!..(it has been known lunches get stolen!!!).. so I don't know how am going to handle this... I really didn't want to stop nursing this soon... with last time I went back to work after 6 weeks but I was able to give him breast milk exclusivly for 4 months... this time I will be going back after 8 weeks...but don't know hwo long I will be able to keep t... and I don't have much in the freezer right now!... am waiting for my fenugreek supplies to arrive to see if I could up my supply since my boy is too lazy and I only pump.. which we all know doesn't work as good as a baby sucking.....

not happy JAN!!! (only the aussies will get this one - sorry!)

That stinks Sherry. As far as batteries, I find that they usually last a day or two in my Medela PIS. They probably last a little longer but I do notice a change in the suction. I bought some rechargables. Though at work I just plug in and plug in most of the time. The batteries did last longer than I expected. Is there a spare office you can use? We have an extra office and I just plop down in the floor. There is a desk but I find the floor easier for me. I just pop my milk in the freezer at work, though there are only three of us. I have also found that an ice pack in the little cooler thing keeps the milk more than sufficiently cool until the end of the day. Though I hope you can get some better arrangements.

Sherry, can you pump in the car? I pumped in the car alot when I was working. I would just park around the back of the building near the loading docks... I had a car charger for my pump.

no unfortunately there is not spare offices.. as it is we have trouble getting a free room for a meeting.... in the financial industry ..and especially within IT professionals.... they don't really take care of those kinds of details.... and I would have to pump in the actual loo..... like sit on the loo and just sit there and other ladies will hear that noise ..and they WILL say something.... it does suck big time.. I really still can't believe it.....I am praying that when I do go back I will find a solution.... I have the Ameda Purley yours pump.....

and the worst part is... I am not planning really on staying there for THAT much longer maybe a month or so... am only going back for insurance purposes and stuff like that.....
