I always found that the breast was almost more sore the next day or so...mostly from pressing and massaging it.

ORIGINAL: manda59 Info please! I have a real-time Christian friend whose baby was born 3 weeks ago at 31 weeks; she had ingested a lot of blood from her mother (long story) and her stomach was a bit swollen so she hasn't had any milk yet. So my friend has been pumping - frequently through the day and also waking every 3 hours at night to pump. But now, probably due to stress, one boob has dried up completely and she can only pump from one boob. I was wondering about things to boost her supply, and remembered a couple of things from here: one was fenugreek, right? And the other was Mother's Milk Tea, I think. Was there anything else? If she is willing to pump and dump...some good old Stout will do the trick...it is thicker and richer than beer...and is actually more of a food....so as long as she is pumping...she can drink it and then just dump the pumping that is 2 hours after. Why would she need to dump? Alcohol leaves breastmilk just as fast as it leaves our bodies, I used to drink a beer while I was nursing so that the next session 2-3 hours later would be "safe". actually research is showing that alcohol may NOT leave breastmilk that fast...keep in mind the milk the baby is getting is from the 2 hour period that the body was processing the alcohol so it will have traces of alcohol (the amount differs from person to person and their abilitly to metabolize alcohol and how high the alcohol content of said drink is)....so if she drinks a full 8 oz glass of stout at 2...the alcohol WILL be in the milk pumped at 4, but not in the milk pumped at 6 (unless she drinks more stout at 4...which I don't recommend!). Usually just one glass of stout in the morning and one before bed for about week is all that is needed.

I've decreased my number of times a day that I pump (now I'm only pumping 2-3 times). Our schedule has just gotten so busy and I felt I was taking time away from Josie by pumpiing 6-8 times a day. Of course my supply has suffered and I'm only pumping 6 ounces a day. I'm building up a supply in the freezer because Josie will be having tubes put in her ears and some more work done on one tearduct. I want her to have breastmilk while at the hospital (short-stay) and while healing for a day or two afterwards. I currently have 5 bottles worth saved up. Oh, and I'm no longer having the pain and burning in one of my breasts. Guess the extra pumping, hot showers and massage helped!

That's a bummer, Erin. But, i'm glad the clogged duct is better! Do continue to use your double pump as pumping one side makes the other side wanna produce too. Hard to explain, but you get more milk when you do two at once rather than one at a time. Do you use the same cones on each breast everytime? Like the left cone is always on a certain breast and the right cone is always on the other? If it is, switch them up. I dunno if it possible, but maybe one side is not pumping as well as the other on the pump.

Sorry, I was kind of confusing. OK, I can't really explain it into words......just make sure your tubes, valves, caps and that other part I forgot the name are all nice a clear and working properly. Perhaps something in the parts is not working as efficiently. And, be sure the bottles are screwed onto the cones nice and tight. When you pump, does one nipple get sucked in further than the other at all? That would be one way to tell.

That could be it too. Do you have a hands-free system that you use? If you do, try to squeeze the less-producing-breast while it's being pumped, like you're milking a cow to stimulate it more. That might help.

It's ok to gently squeeze the nipple area or just gently massage the breast that's not being pumped...but you don't want to smash on the breast that's not being pumped because you can bruise or damage ducts/breast tissue by being too vigorous. I second whom ever suggested hand expressing on all fours while massaging the clogged duct. Hand expressing and slight pressure and circular massaging always worked on my clogged ducts. You'll usually know when the duct is better because you'll start squirting more once it's released. You can also make sure that your 'spouts' (not sure how to phrase that!) aren't blocked by old crusty milk. When my nipple 'spouts' would get blocked I was more likely to get a clogged duct as well.

If your using a Medela, be sure to check the little white membranes. They can get tiny tears that you can't even see that can cause a loss of suction. You can buy just the membranes if they need to be replaced. --Kat

Yes, the membranes. A couple of mine tore on my Ameda. Luckily I had replacement ones.

Sometimes when I was pumping, I could squeeze near the back of the breast and get more while pumping. You could try that. What type of pump is it? FWIW, I LOVED my hand pump. I used to pump all.the.time. when we were in the car.

Erin, definitely keep pumping. I know I'm not the first to say that. I have had both my sides do that and they go back and forth. At first, my left side was my big producer and my right was hardly anything and now they're swapped. I think it was because I'd always put him on the left first and I'd move him over quickly to get to the second side and then I'd let him linger on the right. So it definitely helps to just keep pumping. I also heard someone suggest pumping, then take a ten minute break, and pump again. I always do breast compressions at the end of my pumping session (when I did pump, I don't anymore) and would notice the trickle pick up again though very brief.

Chelsea, I think Sarah, Donna and WOF tandem nursed with some of their kiddos.
