She is connected directly to DSL Modem (SpeedStream5100). I am connected to it by a wireless router (Linksys -WRT54G).

Sorry to be a pain, but I need more.

I need to know HOW she is connected to the modem. I need to know what interface she is using (Ethernet or USB or ???).

In total novice lingo....There is a cable running from her computer to the first of four ports in the router and then there is an ethernet cable running from the Internet port on the router to the Ethernet port on the modem.

The modem is connected only to the Linksys, nothing else. Correct?

Your daughter is connected WIRED to the Linksys.

Yes, that is what I mean.

Remember all that stuff we did to the wired port on your PC? You need to go back and do that to the wireless port this time.

Disable IPv6 (or make sure it's still disabled if you already disabled it).
Change DNS server address from automatic to 4.2.2.2.

"OK" out of everything, then in a command window do "ipconfig /all" and paste the output here so I can look at it.

Once that's done, do an "ipconfig /all" on your daughter's system and tell me what the system's IP address, subnet mask, and DNS server(s) are.

I am starting to suspect a bad or misconfigured Linksys (router), but let's keep proceeding in a logical, orderly fashion.

While you are off doing that junk, some FYI stuff for you...

One of the nastier bits of malware out there these days is a piece of code that sits silently on web sites, even legitimate ones, that reconfigures routers to point web requests to places they ought not to go. For example, redirecting requests for web pages to some server in Russia, and once that connection is made, all kinds of further damage can be done. Viruses/spyware installed, identity theft, etc.

It is possible this is the problem in your case *IF* you have not changed the Linksys's default username/password from <blank>/admin. What's the answer to that one, or do I already know?

It was not done on the local...I just went in and unchecked the IPv6 and entered the 4.2.2.2. Now I'll do the rest.

Ok. So your wireless interface is running without IPv6 and with DNS server 4.2.2.2.

So on your system, ipconfig/all should show your IP address and the subnet mask and the DHCP server. Could you verify those, please, and tell me?

Also need the same info from the other (wired) system.

Daughters computer:

IP address 192.168.1.101
subnet: 255.255.255.0
DNS Server 192.168.0.1

MY Computer

IPv4 address: 192.168.1.100 (preferred)
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS Server: 4.2.2.2

O.k. her computer didn't change. What should I do.

BTW, I have no idea if I changed the default on the Linksys. Please don't tell me I have THAT kind of a problem.

Nothing. We don't care at this point. We just want to make sure we don't have duplicate IP addresses. We do not. This is A Good Thing.

1. Pull up a Firefox window.
2. In the URL window up top, enter 192.168.1.1 and then hit <ENTER>.
3. Username: leave it blank.
4. Password: admin
5. See if that gets you into the Linksys config menu.

I hope the answer is no.

6. Who set up the Linksys, or was it just unboxed and plugged in?

Do the following at your own risk (extraordinarily slight, but it's there) of losing Internet connectivity, requiring a service call to your DSL provider.

1. Kill power to modem, router, and PC.

2. Disconnect cable between modem and router.

3. Connect a system directly to the modem (to the same port the router was plugged into).

4. Power up modem.

5. Wait 30-60 seconds for sync with the service provider's DSL equipment.

6. Power up PC & let it come all the way up.

7. Do an ipconfig/all on the system (from a command window, obviously) and see if the modem handed you an IP address and subnet mask. Also note the DNS server address.

8. If you got an address & subnet mask, see if you can get to the web sites in question.

Yikes...I started reading it[:o] I have not noticed any weird activity on our accounts though...should I change my login on Linksys? Also, wouldn't it just affect me...not my daughter, since she's hardwired to the modem?

Yes, you should change the router password.

You should have someone configure the router for you, professionally.

Your daughter is not hard-wired to the modem. She is connected to the router with an Ethernet cable.

Let me know how that exercise direct-connecting to the modem works out.

I will be with a client in 25 minutes. Let' see if we can get an answer on this before then.
