The janjaweed militias in Sudan are also using rape as a weapon of war sometimes making parents watch their daughters being assaulted by sometimes up to 15 men. The ICC just indicted the President of Sudan on war crimes for this and genocide. But since there is no oil in these countries, western nations condemn it "in the strongest of terms" but don't do anything concrete to stop these atrocities even though the victims number in the MILLIONS.

I think the types of steps that need to be taken are a drastic economic boycott like the type that caused South Africa to rescind apartheid. No troops were needed there. But unfortunately other countries (including the west) will do business with those countries if there is a buck to be made. If the banks froze the assets of these countries these guys would find their collective heads on a stick since their thugs, ahem, loyal troops like to be paid. The African Union also needs to get a backbone in dealing with these issues. Or maybe we should just call them the African Disunion! I guess that one drawback I foresee is the fact that our human race won't ever come together for the common good of anyone and that governments have come to view humans like a professor high on Global Warming - as extremely expendable!

There's sadly no question that this sort of brutality has been going on in Africa for a very long time. Too bad most of the world is content to let it all happen. A friend of mine grew up in Uganda, and tells of having to duck para-military gangs who would raid her village on a regular basis.

That story made me want to go and throw up. That is beyond horror. Africa is going through so many horrors, FGM, famine, HIV, wars. A friend of mine is there doing missionary work with her husband. They live in an inclosed area that is guarded night and day. (not actually in the Congo, but near by) We are so blessed to live where we do and need to lift these people up in prayer daily.

This is horribly evil - I didn't realize how bad it is in so many places in Africa - thanks for posting WormHeart. It's hard to know which sites to trust with donations, but I wouldn't think CNN would risk posting bad organizations. "Congo rape victims -- how to help After watching Jeff Koinange's story on air or reading his personal take here, many of you are probably wondering how you can help. Here are two organizations working in Congo: The Swedish Pentecostal Mission -- PMU Contact person: Marie Walterzon Tel in Congo (243)-81-318-6246 TEARFUND -- A British NGO Contact person: Tilly Leuring Tel in Congo: (243)-997-089-850 Posted By "360" Producers: 11:49 AM ET" http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/anderson.cooper.360/blog/2006/05/congo-rape-victims-how-to-help.html Peace and God bless,

And what is the UN doing about the problem? Just what they did in Rwanda: absolutely nothing! Useless organization.

colliefan, I tend to agree with your view. If there is any diplomatic, economical, governmental, or political body of people in position to do anything about the things that are going on in Africa, it is the UN. However, the UN has repeatedly failed to live up to its charter, its reason for existence. I have no idea why this may be the case. Maybe it is the fact that they know that they have no real "desire" or effectively/ forceful (militaristic) way of addressing the situation. Maybe they fail to do anything because of what someone hinted at. Though Africa is a large continent, to date, there does not seem to be much of anything in Africa that the rest of the world really needs or wants. If there was the conditions if Africa would most likely draw far more attention.

Our government probably would do nothing more than send a letter requesting that this violence against women stop. However, the church is not limited to placing its interests only where we can get oil from. Christians can mobilize and get things started to change the society of the Congo. And we can certainly all donate funds to make improvements for education, medical care, and business opportunities for people so that they aren't killing each other over scarce resources. There are christian missions which do this work, but they need more help than they are getting.

Appuling. Pray everyone, because prayer changes things, where we do not have the power to change things, our God does. Pray for these victims, and their tormentors to change their hearts. Pray for knowledge of what we can do as a nation, and as the church, and as individuals. I will start tonight.

Pathetic. Well actually I wasn't dumping on Bush. He is just the head bozo in charge. When I said Government, I mean the whole Government, Congress, The Senate, Democrats, Republicans and Bush. But by no means, lets give him a pass since he has watched it happen for 8 years. Normally I don't blame him for anything. We the people are to blame for most of our own problems. But in this issue, I will blame him.

How many rapes occur in the USA? Maybe the UN should investigate.
