Roberta_ -> Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/13/2008 8:55:08 PM)

I really need to get some serious sleep, but I don't want to turn to sleep aides.

What are some of the best - and healthiest - means that you use to get a good night's sleep?

manda59 -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/13/2008 9:00:28 PM)

Would you consider herbal sleep aides (in tablet form) or not?

Roberta_ -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/13/2008 9:01:41 PM)

What type of herbal? Do you mean like different kinds of tea? I love tea as long as their is no caffeine in it.

manda59 -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/13/2008 9:04:14 PM)

You could try camomile tea, it's supposed to be restful.

I was thinking more of something like Passiflora (in tablet form).

Roberta_ -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/13/2008 9:05:10 PM)

I've never heard of it.

Are there any major side effects?

his_chosen -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/13/2008 9:14:11 PM)

Generally, when I'm working out on a regular basis I sleep very well.

Roberta_ -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/13/2008 9:30:55 PM)

What type of working out and what time of day?

sunshine4God -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/13/2008 11:37:31 PM)

I always pray before bed till I fall asleep.

his_chosen -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/14/2008 8:55:52 AM)

What type of working out... I am a triathlete currently training for a Half Ironman (1.2mile swim, 56mile bike, 13.1mile run). I work out about 6 days a week, although looking at this weeks schedule, it looks like my coach hasn't given me a rest day.

Monday--45min open water swim
Tuesday--40min run
Wednesday--45min open water swim, 60min bike
THursday--1:20 bike, 30min run
Friday--1:30 open water swim
Saturday--1:20 run
Sunday--3:00 bike

Generally, I'm up around 5:30. During the winter, I would be in the pool by 6:15. Now, I'm still getting up that early so I can get my long run or long ride in early in the day. Then, add a full day of being a mom, and by 9:30 I'm ready for bed!

Rarely do I work out after dinner. First, it's difficult to work out with food on my stomach. Also, it can be difficult to switch from being keyed up from a workout to preparing for bed.

That said, Saturday I was supposed to do a long swim. It had to wait until after work, which turned out to be very stressful. However, by the time I got to go, we had pop-up thunderstorms at the lake and my gym was closed. So no swimming for me. And I was cranky! Finally, near dark we got a gullywasher rain storm (we never got the rain that there was at the lake). I quickly dressed for a run and had a very enjoyable run in the rain. It was a short and easy 2.5mile run and it blew off a lot of steam. This actually helped me sleep!

Miss Giggles -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/14/2008 9:38:57 AM)

It depends on the person. I can workout in the evening and still fall asleep. Some people find that working out in the evening keeps them awake.

I have tried working out in the morning and it makes me want to take a nap in the afternoon and I am at work.

Kat_D -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/14/2008 10:34:27 AM)

With all do respect to our Triathlete, I don't think Roberta's going to leap to a work-out schedule like yours overnight. However, a nice long, brisk walk in the afternoon can do wonders in regards to sleep.

Sleepy Time Tea and/or Advil PM are all I need when I have this problem....15 minutes later, it's ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! [sm=thumbsup.gif]

his_chosen -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/14/2008 10:52:17 AM)

I certainly would not expect DenimDiva to jump into my workout schedule. The question was what kind of workouts do I do, and when do I do them. So I answered the question.

I do believe that God created us to work. We need physical activity if we want our body to work correctly.

pumpkin -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/15/2008 4:07:25 PM)

cut out all naps, and follow a bed time routine, including turning lights down or off for a bit before going to bed.

Roberta_ -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/15/2008 4:11:12 PM)

Who has time to take a nap! LOL! [:D]

Calea37 -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/15/2008 7:35:07 PM)

You can buy Melatonin at GNC...it doesn't give you a druggy type sleep. I have used it occasionally. It helped me sleep but I do think I was a little groggy the next day. One thing I had read about it too was that it *can* cause depression, so if you are prone to that you may want to be careful. I find that any kind of sleep-aid usually increases depressed feelings in me so I pretty much stay away from them. Also, even though Melatonin is "natural" you have to be careful with it if you take prescription meds. So basically this post was pretty much no help....[&:] lol

I won't be able to use it then!

Have you taken the time to look at why you have a sleep issue? Do you have trouble going to sleep or do you fall asleep but wake up frequently? What are you doing during the rest of the day that might be related? A sleep aid, even a so-called natural one might just mask another problem.

One of your responses indicated an issue with depression. One of the classic symptoms of depression is sleep disturbance. Sleep aids will often woersen untreated depression.

Roberta_ -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/16/2008 8:53:29 PM)

Yes, I do know the reasons why I'm not sleeping. Those are being worked on. In the meantime, I thought it'd be an interesting idea to find out what others do to fall asleep.

agapetos -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/17/2008 6:11:52 PM)

It depends. Firstly, I look and see the reasons why I'm not sleeping? Noise, worry, eating too late etc. You also need to look at whether your bedroom is the right temperature or not and whether your bed is right for you (comfort-wise) etc. I don't tend to worry about not sleeping any more (though it's taken a long time and a lot of work to get to this point), nor do I worry if I need to sleep during the day.

Warm baths, relaxing music, avoidance of things that stimulate my mind (either books, tv, puzzles etc) warm milk, medication.

As you know the reasons why you're not sleeping, you should find that you'll be able to sleep once the issues have been resolved. However, it may take a while for you to get into a regular pattern again and you may need to be strict with yourself.

Ouch! That could be a problem because I love to read!

Liveloved -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/17/2008 10:57:31 PM)

I don't know how old you are but at 53, I rarely sleep a full night and most of my girlfriends speak of the same. Often I sleep a couple hours, then am up for an hour or two, and on and on and on. Actually I get my best sleep between 6:30 and 9:30am. I don't like this but have not found the answer.

Yes, I workout regularly. I have a bent toward depression and my father had insomnia. And then there is the hormonal shift that women of my age seem to experience.

I drink Sleepy Time Tea. I have a comfy bed. I have great bedroom temperature. I have no noise. I do read but haven't watched television in years.

Perhaps it is just the way life is for some of us. I am very thankful that I don't have to be at work at a certain time.

If I had an answer for you, I'd surely share it. Bless ya![:)]

OneJohn410 -> RE: Rockabye and Goodnight.... (7/18/2008 1:14:35 AM)

Sleep apnea- this is not a good thing for folks that love a good snore each night. Basically, one's breathing can be interrupted for 30 seconds or so while sleeping. I think I snore, but I don't know... I've never woken up and told myself to stop snoring.

But seriously, you could know you are a snorer(?), a snoring person, does that have a feminine? Snoress? I don't think so. If you feel like you are not well rested and it's time for another day, and the tradition continues, you might consider having a sleep study done. I'm not saying it's your dillema, but it sure beats a partial heart attack or stroke during the night because there was no oxygen to be had when called for.

No one has mentioned hot cocoa yet. Even the no-fun, low-calorie, sodium-free, no trans-fat whathaveyou variety is okay, but not like the real thing, where you add powdered milk to it and hot water. A happy stomach is a great thing at bed time.

I hope you've had some great sleeps since you posted!

LL- I'm 43

OneJohn- I know for a fact that I snore when I have allergies or a cold. I have woke myself up from it.

Do you wake up with headaches? Have people told you you snore? A sleep center can ask some questioons that are a pre-screening that would give some idea as to whether it is worth pursuing.
