I really need to get some serious sleep, but I don't want to turn to sleep aides. What are some of the best - and healthiest - means that you use to get a good night's sleep?

Would you consider herbal sleep aides (in tablet form) or not?

What type of herbal? Do you mean like different kinds of tea? I love tea as long as their is no caffeine in it.

You could try camomile tea, it's supposed to be restful. I was thinking more of something like Passiflora (in tablet form).

I've never heard of it. Are there any major side effects?

Generally, when I'm working out on a regular basis I sleep very well.

What type of working out... I am a triathlete currently training for a Half Ironman (1.2mile swim, 56mile bike, 13.1mile run). I work out about 6 days a week, although looking at this weeks schedule, it looks like my coach hasn't given me a rest day. Monday--45min open water swim Tuesday--40min run Wednesday--45min open water swim, 60min bike THursday--1:20 bike, 30min run Friday--1:30 open water swim Saturday--1:20 run Sunday--3:00 bike Generally, I'm up around 5:30. During the winter, I would be in the pool by 6:15. Now, I'm still getting up that early so I can get my long run or long ride in early in the day. Then, add a full day of being a mom, and by 9:30 I'm ready for bed! Rarely do I work out after dinner. First, it's difficult to work out with food on my stomach. Also, it can be difficult to switch from being keyed up from a workout to preparing for bed. That said, Saturday I was supposed to do a long swim. It had to wait until after work, which turned out to be very stressful. However, by the time I got to go, we had pop-up thunderstorms at the lake and my gym was closed. So no swimming for me. And I was cranky! Finally, near dark we got a gullywasher rain storm (we never got the rain that there was at the lake). I quickly dressed for a run and had a very enjoyable run in the rain. It was a short and easy 2.5mile run and it blew off a lot of steam. This actually helped me sleep!

It depends on the person. I can workout in the evening and still fall asleep. Some people find that working out in the evening keeps them awake. I have tried working out in the morning and it makes me want to take a nap in the afternoon and I am at work.

I certainly would not expect DenimDiva to jump into my workout schedule. The question was what kind of workouts do I do, and when do I do them. So I answered the question. I do believe that God created us to work. We need physical activity if we want our body to work correctly.

cut out all naps, and follow a bed time routine, including turning lights down or off for a bit before going to bed.

Yes, I do know the reasons why I'm not sleeping. Those are being worked on. In the meantime, I thought it'd be an interesting idea to find out what others do to fall asleep.

It depends. Firstly, I look and see the reasons why I'm not sleeping? Noise, worry, eating too late etc. You also need to look at whether your bedroom is the right temperature or not and whether your bed is right for you (comfort-wise) etc. I don't tend to worry about not sleeping any more (though it's taken a long time and a lot of work to get to this point), nor do I worry if I need to sleep during the day. Warm baths, relaxing music, avoidance of things that stimulate my mind (either books, tv, puzzles etc) warm milk, medication.

As you know the reasons why you're not sleeping, you should find that you'll be able to sleep once the issues have been resolved. However, it may take a while for you to get into a regular pattern again and you may need to be strict with yourself.

I don't know how old you are but at 53, I rarely sleep a full night and most of my girlfriends speak of the same. Often I sleep a couple hours, then am up for an hour or two, and on and on and on. Actually I get my best sleep between 6:30 and 9:30am. I don't like this but have not found the answer. Yes, I workout regularly. I have a bent toward depression and my father had insomnia. And then there is the hormonal shift that women of my age seem to experience. I drink Sleepy Time Tea. I have a comfy bed. I have great bedroom temperature. I have no noise. I do read but haven't watched television in years. Perhaps it is just the way life is for some of us. I am very thankful that I don't have to be at work at a certain time. If I had an answer for you, I'd surely share it. Bless ya!

Sleep apnea- this is not a good thing for folks that love a good snore each night. Basically, one's breathing can be interrupted for 30 seconds or so while sleeping. I think I snore, but I don't know... I've never woken up and told myself to stop snoring. But seriously, you could know you are a snorer(?), a snoring person, does that have a feminine? Snoress? I don't think so. If you feel like you are not well rested and it's time for another day, and the tradition continues, you might consider having a sleep study done. I'm not saying it's your dillema, but it sure beats a partial heart attack or stroke during the night because there was no oxygen to be had when called for. No one has mentioned hot cocoa yet. Even the no-fun, low-calorie, sodium-free, no trans-fat whathaveyou variety is okay, but not like the real thing, where you add powdered milk to it and hot water. A happy stomach is a great thing at bed time. I hope you've had some great sleeps since you posted! OneJohn410

A sleep center can ask some questioons that are a pre-screening that would give some idea as to whether it is worth pursuing.
