1 Corinthians 10:23-24
23"Everything is permissible"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is constructive. 24Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.

What is your understanding of the text above (please consider it in it's context)?

You can relate this back to your question on horoscopes. We certainly can read them. Just like we can read the sports section of the paper. But do they profit us? If we are living redemptively, all of our time and the use of it is seen as His and we use it wisely.

In conjunction with this passage in I Cor 10, read Col 2. All of the can's and can't's of religion are a mere shadow, not the substance of Christ and, in fact, can be quite dangerous. These have the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement . . . but are of no value against fleshly indulgence! (Col 2:23) We can so easily deceive ourselves as well as deceiving others. It's not about what we do. It's about Whose we are.[:)]

"Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? [1 Corinthians 10:22].
Paul now comes back to what he said at the very beginning of this section on Christian liberty.
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not [1 Cor. 10:23].
Paul says that he has the freedom to do these questionable things, things on which the Bible is silent as to their being right or wrong. For example, I think Paul would say, “If I felt that I should go to the games, I would go.” I think Paul must have attended the great Olympic events which took place in his day, because many of his illustrations are taken from athletic events that were carried on in the great Colosseum and stadiums of that day. Paul says all such things are lawful for him, but all things are not expedient because of the fact that the thing he could do might hurt a weak believer. He says, “All things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.” That is, they don’t “build me up in the faith.”
---
So Paul lays down this guideline:
Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth [1 Cor. 10:24].
The Christian has a tremendous liberty in Christ. However, we are to seek the welfare of the other man. So a Christian’s life should not be primarily directed and dictated by liberty. Liberty is limited by love. A Christian is not pinned down in legality; nor is he circumscribed by strict rules. He is limited by love. He should be concerned about his influence and effect on others. That is the thought which Paul has here.

Brining alcoholic beverages into my home without taking into consideration my dh is a former drinker and has a family history of alcoholics. I can do without. Taking into consideration the "weaker brother."

It's interesting, stampinlady, license or 'Pharasee'(legalist) are the 'weaker brethren'. Romans 14:14-"I know there’s nothing unclean in obedience but we make cleanliness unclean by our approach to another’s burden. 15 If because of external attitudes our brother is hurt you aren’t walking in your sacrifice [for] we destroy what is sustenance for him to whom Christ died. 16 Therefore, don’t let a good thing[for you]become a license for your own vanity 17 for the kingdom of God is not indulging in vanity but righteousness and peace and joy in your gifting. 18 He who submits his way serves Christ to the acceptance of God and is approved by men."

"The ultimate freedom is the liberty of obedience."(Elisabeth Elliot)

The liberty in Christ is in seeking the welfare of another. Liberty in Christ is being relased from the bondage of the self and its desires and expanding to a greater purpose than the self.

One time I had an injection of heroin because I was making this point to someone who is addicted. That all things are permissable, but not all things are expedient.

Now to myself I would be saying it is not expedient for me to do this because

1. It is puncturing my flesh and putting a foreign substance in my body, which is the temple.

2. I have previously been addicted so doing this activity could very well and did lead me to another addiction.

My intention was to make a point that nothing on earth has any control over me. In reality it didn't work because when he rang me the next day to see how I was feeling and asked me if I wanted another I took up the offer.

It is not expedient to be doing things which are harmful to us. We should not judge but that doesn't mean we ought to partake. Also activities such as having casual sex or even getting plastered drunk or stoned are not expedient because they are not in line with obedience to Him. Obeying Him and loving Him is to have respect for Him and His laws, not disregarding them altogether because I am free to do so, but being free to choose not to do these things and having the freedom to chose what is right, what is good for others and me and not what is wrong or harmful to others or myself.

SonInMe1 -> RE: It doesn't matter what we do......or does it? (7/12/2008 5:46:15 PM)

To me these verses mean we are free in Christ. We are not condemned by the Law. We will not lose our salvation if we sin.

However, we will be convicted of our sins. We should not sin, not only for the benefit of others, but because it also hurts us. Sin is bad.

Having the occaisional drink is not a sin.

Eating a donut once in a while is not a sin.

Having a drink once in a while for an alcoholic...is bad.

Having a donut as a diabetic is bad.

We must discern.

Having a drink around an alcoholic....or a donut around a diabetic...I don't know. I guess it would depend on the surroundings. If you do either, in excess its a sin. If I am out in the mall or some other place, with a donut..am I exposing diabetics to sin?

Its not cut and dry.

Is our church promoting sin when they offer coffee and donuts? Maybe there are people with high blood pressure and they should not have coffee. Should all coffee be banned from church?

How about a male with lust issues? Should all women be banned from church? Some women would turn heads in the most conservative dress.

While the standard is high, we must be careful not to be legalistic. We must also help our weaker brethern with councilling and accountability so the temptations they face...and we ALL face sin temptations...will be managed.

Avoidence is not usually the end all be all cure for problems. Self control and discipline and accountability are other factors.

Thank you for sharing your testimony on this subject Giulia. You have helped to explain very well what the text in the OP means. [:)] and praise God for mercifully keeping you safe.

Well it just might matter what one does;

(Gal 5:19) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

(Gal 5:20) Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

(Gal 5:21) Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Thanks

Yes, it does matter what we do. It matters what we do with Jesus. Do we accept Him, and then go on living as though He is not in us? Do we do what we think He wants us to do, instead of allowing Him to lead us from within?

John 6:28-29
They then said, What are we to do, that we may [habitually] be working the works of God? [What are we to do to carry out what God requires?]

Jesus replied, This is the work (service) that God asks of you: that you believe in the One Whom He has sent [that you cleave to, trust, rely on, and have faith in His Messenger].

Yes, it matters what we do. Do we truly believe in Him? Do we cleave to Him? Do we Trust in Him? Do we rely on Him? Do we have faith in Him?

Because if we truly do, then, and only then, are we doing the work of God.

Peace
