That is....guys dressing and acting like a homosexual. Apparently, this is the new trend. I just found out that the son of some friends of ours is metro. What is everyone's opinion on this? This is person who is a PK and supposably a Christian.

stellaluna -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/11/2008 5:23:00 PM)

Metrosexual does not refer to a man acting gay...it refers to a man who is preoccupied with fashion, style, etc. Although I think we've moved past the crest of that and we're starting to see the backlash. It's nothing new, anyway.

HisFish -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/11/2008 5:24:00 PM)

It's just another symptom of the feminization of America.

What does that mean?(Seriously asking)

Don't know too much about the whole metro movement other than men acting feminine truly makes me ill. I hate to carry a purse, but I'll be darned if I hand my husband a man-bag, just so he can do it for me. Chivalry or not........

Ya, thats a good question, My statement is not meant to be anti-femininity. What i mean is that for decades now the feminization of boys has been in full swing. You look at the schools, how over time they have been indoctrinating our boys in the softer more feminine doctrines. For instance:

The Department of Education supported the writing of a model curriculum for day care providers called Creating Sex-Fair Family Day Care.{17} It seems that the main goal of the curriculum is, again, to get boys to play with dolls, Gender crusaders believe that if they can influence little boys early enough, they can make them more like little girls. Feminist philosopher Sandra Lee Bartky writes that human beings are born bisexual and through conditioning are "transformed into male and female gender personalities."

Some teachers are even going beyond that:

A teacher in San Francisco is going one step further. She has transformed her classroom into a woman-centered community of learners. All the images in the classroom are of women, and as one feminist noted "perhaps for the first time, boys are the ones looking through the window."{20} While each student is required to perform a dramatic dialogue in the author's voice, the boys are forced to do works by women. One little boy attempts to lip-synch a song by blues singer Etta James, and when the other boys giggle they are chastised for their insensitivity.{21} During a history class the girls are encouraged to discuss how boys are sexual predators. The teacher is excited to see how angry the girls are getting. Although one boy tries to defend his gender, another admits to an interviewer, "I couldn't really defend myself, because it's true. Men are pigs, you know?"{22}

even on the playground it is implemented:

Schools are denying the very behavior that makes little boys boys. In Southern California, a mother was stunned to find out that her son was disciplined for running and jumping over a bench at recess.{23} Studies in England have shown that boys benefit from competition in school. However, in deference to the female tendency to learn more in cooperative groups, competition of all types is being purged from the schoolhouse. Sixty percent of American high schools no longer use class rankings or announce valedictorians.{24} Referring to the hostility towards honor rolls, one principal has stated, "It flies in the face of the philosophy of not making it so competitive for those little kids…We even frown on spelling bees."

It was my understanding that metro is on its way out. I read somewhere that for a while cosmetic plastic surgeons and electrologists were inundated with requests from men to remove body hair and create more feminine features (noses being popular). Recently, there have been increases in requests for more masculine noses and facial features as well as the ADDITION of body hair.

Craziness!

That's what I was saying up above. It was just a trend and I really wouldn't worry too much about it.

Edited to add, that while "metrosexual" is a play on "heterosexual"...it has nothing to do with men trying to act gay.

Peter_Gunn -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/12/2008 3:39:34 PM)

It's a "thing" that's been around for several years now. My daughter (just got her bachelor's) educated me on "metrosexuals" when she entered college...and it wasn't new then.

I'd say, further than the feminization of America, it's more like de-genderizing (if that's even a word). Just as HisFish was pointing out...we are all on the same level, equal in all things, able in all things equally...that's the teaching today. If a man can do it, a woman can do it and vice versa.

I really saw it when my kids were little and they wouldn't keep score in kids games...there was no such thing as an "out" in baseball...didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I have a friend that went to school in Deleware (years ago) and the high school didn't have grades.

So we all female, male and anything else you want to be. The world will not be satisfied until one cannot tell the difference.

Well, it's not really a new trend. The term 'metrosexual' started around 1998, so it's been a good ten years or more.

Actually I'd say its more the obsession with material things and looks in America.

car2ner -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/13/2008 7:15:19 AM)

hey, we had the Unisex idea way back in the 60's. Everyone looking the same, male and female. It wasn't the women looking more burly[;)]

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/13/2008 11:14:05 AM)

And I thought the metro was the city bus.

colliefan -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/13/2008 10:05:58 PM)

As I understand the term, it is a guy preoccupied with his looks such as Johnboy Edwards

I feel pretty

My youngest collie would qualify as he loves being groomed. His brother, on the other hand, hates it,

car2ner -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/14/2008 8:35:03 AM)

What do we expect of on air personalities now? Some of us have huge high def televisions that make their heads larger than life and you can see every zit, dark under-eye circle and misplaced hair. Heaven forbid a tie goes slanted.

I guess the make-up artist will be a high demand job now.

KatMack -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/14/2008 3:47:34 PM)

I heard recently that the backlash has really started now and the new trend is referred to as "Retrosexual." I imagine the Grizzly Adams look will be coming back as a result [8D]

I agree with stellaluna...it's on its way out and nothing much to worry about.

Course, if it's like everything else...the good ole southern boy metrosexual will be the last to figure it out and stop doing it.[8|]

Many of them good ole Suthern boys still have mullets! [:D] It'll be 2020 before they catch onto the metrosexual thing!

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/14/2008 9:02:52 PM)

Every time I see this thread, I break out in song:

Let me tell you the story
Of a man named Charlie
On a tragic and fateful day
He put ten cents in his pocket,
Kissed his wife and family
Went to ride on the MTA

Charlie handed in his dime
At the Kendall Square Station
And he changed for Jamaica Plain
When he got there the conductor told him,
'One more nickel.'
Charlie could not get off that train.

Chorus:
Did he ever return,
No he never returned
And his fate is still unlearn'd
He may ride forever
'neath the streets of Boston
He's the man who never returned.

Now all night long
Charlie rides through the tunnels
Saying, 'What will become of me?
How can I afford to see
My sister in Chelsea
Or my cousin in Roxbury?'

Charlie's wife goes down
To the Scollay Square station
Every day at quarter past two
And through the open window
She hands Charlie a sandwich
As the train comes rumblin' through.
- Chorus

As his train rolled on
Through Greater Boston
Charlie looked around and sighed,
'Well, I'm sore and disgusted
And I'm absolutely busted;
I guess this is my last long ride.'

Now you citizens of Boston,
Don't you think it's a scandal
That the people have to pay and pay
Vote for Walter A. O'Brien
And fight the fare increase
Get poor Charlie off the MTA.
- Chorus
The text of the song was written in 1949 by Jacqueline Steiner and Bess Lomax Hawes. It was one of seven songs written for O'Brien's campaign, each one emphasized a key point of his platform. One recording was made of each song, and they were broadcast from a sound truck that drove around the streets of Boston. This earned O'Brien a $10 fine for disturbing the peace.

I think that's charming.

I think someone should offer them all makeovers.

Metros included.

fantom -> RE: What is up the this Metro thing? (7/15/2008 12:46:35 PM)

How is being concerned about how you look feminine?

I like clothes, I like my hair to look well groomed. I use products that protect my skin from sun damage and hopefully will slow down the crows feet and the dark circles under my eyes.

Sue me. I am in my mid forties and would prefer to be mistaken for 35 than 55. I would prefer not to dress like an old man before it's my turn.

All that to say, it was a buzz word for a few years that isn't around much now but the concept of trying to look fashionable and kempt isn't new and isn't likely to be gone anytime soon.

Metro goes a little beyond normal good hygiene and fashionable clothing. It's more like an obsession with well-defined eyebrows and pedicured feet.

I get manicured hands on men, but not pedicures.[&:]

Add to that, many cosmetic companies offer products for men. I'm not just talking skin care and fragrance, but make-up. And don't get me started on the piercings! That's on another thread.

Back in the 80's, a couple of local drag queens created their own line of make-up for men...wonder if that's the same? [;)]
