CPU at 100% (Full Version)

I have an 'older' Dell. Don't ask me what it is. Dh bought it cheap from work when they upgraded his computer. So, about 5yrs old?

Recently, it's been running slow. Sometimes it shuts down while I'm doing email.

I have task manager up, and just working online, it's at 85%. Doing email it will be at 100%.

I'm no computer wizard, but I'm thinking it shouldn't be that high. This computer was built to run engineering software.

Thoughts on what might be wrong? What's causing the CPU to be so bogged down? And what to do with it? Other than [sm=comp1.gif]

Usually if there are processes running in the background like Anti Virus they will slow you down. Norton was notorious for being a resource hog. Check to see what processes are running. Especially ones in the start up menu. Disable or stop any of the unnecessary programs.

It really depends what programs you have installed on your computer.

Usually anti-virus programs take up the most CPU during scans, or whenever they're updating.

Bring up task manager and the select the processes tab.
It will show you a list of things running. Click directly on the word "cpu" at the top of the columns. Click it a second time and it will show you which program is taking up so much cpu time. Report back with what it is and someone can help you see what is slowing you down so much.

first guess: you have norton. if you had norton 360, it would finally cripple the computer entirely, so i guess you have not quite gotten to 360 degrees of norton computer hostage yet.

second guess: you have been flooded with malware: adware spyware etc.
don't use norton to clean it up because norton is as bad as all of the malware.

third guess: someone has hijacked your computer. you would need a firewall. not norton's because norton's firewall is as bad as being hijacked.

the posts telling you how to figure this out are on-track with what i know.

Viruses can cause this but in many cases Dells work better with the Max Memory installed, how much mem is installed? and what is the model of the Dell?

I would do the regular maintenance on this computer. Do a ad removal scan. Run a disk clean-up. Do a virus scan. Lastly, run a defragmentation of your hard drive. In this order.
