Yup! That is definately on my list! The plays and the movie version have all been boring too, IMO.

I think "Romeo and Juliette" is Shakespeare's most severely overrated play (it's pretty cookie cutter and unspectacular as his plays go, so I've never understood why it always seems to be his most "popular" -or at least "popular" in terms of being his most read play, given that it's basically required 9th grade english material at most schools).

But that said, I wouldn't call it "bad." I remember liking it the first time I read it way back in 9th grade, even if I didn't know any better at the time. [:D]

Romeo and Juliet is one of the least romantic plays of all time.

But then I read it at 20 for the first time. A 17 year old 'player' (unabashed romantic who moves from girl to girl always sure this one is his undying love) and a 13 year old with her first romantic experience. His intensity pulls her in. Her naivete and idealism keep her there.

Sad, yes, but not for the same reasons people usually think.

I've always loved Dickens! I can't imagine what there is to dislike about him!

I strongly dislike Peretti books.

But because it has been far too long since I have read a decent novel, I guess the worst books I have seen lately are any Reader's Digest books about the Bible. Totally lacking in scholarship. Whipped cream books with pictures. The pictures are nice, if that is what you read books for.

Have to go with Moby Dick and The Awakening by Kate Chopin which were both reqiured reading in college courses. The first because whole sections read like an obsolete textbook and bored me to tears. As for The Awakening it was well written but the main female character was a moral imbecile who was married with children who seduces her young male babysitter and blames her husband. As if we have not heard that rationalization bedfore. "I cheated and it is all hubby's fault" Or vice versa. Being christian i was not too popular in that class as the young females seemed bent on defending the main female character while i on the other hand pointed out her actions were to me despicable. Her great "awakening" is she reduces herself to the level of a tramp.

I can think of two. Tess of the D'Ubervilles and The General's Daughter.

The first was just plain depressing, and the second was just plain disgusting.

I love to read and will read anything but I HATED "Heart of Darkness" very, very depressing it seemed like such a long book but it actually one of the shortest I ever read in college.
