we picked up a bunch of sprial bound notebooks at Wal-mart yesterday for only 5 cents a piece! I was so happy. We also picked up crayola colored pencils for .88.

Do you all have a preference for spiral or ring binders? Are there subjects that just seem to require one or the other?

I had a teacher in school that FORBID the use of spiral notebooks, because when twenty kids tear out a piece of paper it left 'thingies' all over the floor.

If I was a teacher or my kid was in school and needed to turn things in I would expect those things to be on looseleaf paper.

However, for things like taking notes a spiral notebook is good. Since I HS my kids each have one spiral notebook for each subject and they do their work in those so it all stays in one place and doesn't get lost. I just look at the notebooks every day or two. Things that might get submitted in their portfolios are either printed off the computer or done on looseleaf paper.

We buy a ton of spiral notebooks, because my kids can turn in the entire notebook and I have a record of all their work together. I love spiral notebooks for the kids.

However, for some things, it's better to have a three ring binder. It depends on what subject and so forth. If they will need it removed from their notebook, they use regular loose notebook paper.

The teacher in the 3rd through 5th grades at our school use both.

The spiral notebooks are used for Writer's workshops, journals, and note keeping especially for spelling and Science where they take large amounts of notes. They pretty much use loose leaf paper for everything that is turned in for a grade.

I like spiral notebooks myself. Easier to stash away. When I homeschooled ALL of Ty's stuff was done in spiral notebooks EXCEPT for his journals. I kept those in three ring binders because I always wanted to add blank sheets of paper for artwork.

Blessings,

Garsy

Hey, Garsy, I was wondering if you were going to end up HSing this coming year or if the bus thing was all worked out.

So far so good Jenny.

I'm considering attending a school board meeting here in a couple of weeks (first part of August) to get a better idea of what's going on. I did find out that they cut out ALL middle and high school field trips, and will be charging a "transportation" fee for any trips for band, choir, sports teams or whatever that is NOT required. Elementary school field trips are limited to one per grade level per school year, unless parents are willing to pay a pretty heafty transportation fee. I think that maybe our schools' PTC will help out if needed for field trips if teachers want to do more then just the one. I'm interested to see which field trips were dropped from the 4th and 5th grade schedule.

Some building maintenance problems are just getting quick temporary fixes right now too unless it is deemed an emergency must fix situation.

But Homeschooling in the future is not out of the question - but I've always said that. From the day Ty started school 10 years ago.

Blessings,

Garsy

Those poor kids! I can remember when the WASL was implemented my grandmother complained that she no longer had the time to have ANY fun in her classroom...this is very similar. Teachers tend to be creative but still, it's good to get outside the walls every so often.

I do think they are going to have a LOT more discipline problems especially at the middle school level because of this and in the 5th grade! Those are tough grades to begin with - and not getting out is going to compound those problems. I sure hope the schools plan on bringing in a lot of special assemblies and such, as a lot of the places the kids would go on field trips also have in school programs too. I guess we'll see. I'll still take my kids to special places, in fact out of all the place Aryn went in 4th grade there was only one trip that we had never done before.

Our elementary school has it's OWN environmental center so the kids will still be able to do a lot of nature related trips by just walking out the back door of our building!

The good news is that with all the budget cuts that have already been made - they've been able to keep the vast majority of our district's teachers and have hired a few more.

Boy we are getting off topic.

Did a little inventory today of school supplies. I'm actually doing pretty good so far. Still have quite a bit to get over the next few weeks, but I'm confident that I can stay under the $100 mark for all supplies except for a backpack or two, two orginizers (a new one for Aryn and a replacement for Ty) and clothing.

Blessings,

Garsy

I think my biggest problem right now is how to store notebooks. We have a combination of spiral and ring binders, and keeping them neat and accessible is a thorn in my side every year.

I am trying to convince my dh to build me one of these.

That is an amazing invention. I would love to have one of those, but $350 is really expensive. I can see why you want your husband to make one, rather than buying the expensive model. It is really difficult to store those binders.

You can buy the Lazy Susan gizmo for a few bucks. All you have to do is cut out the top and bottom from some decent grade plywood, basically make a large spool, and TA-DA. (check out this link too)

But first dh has to finish the boy's bunk bed, replace the bathtub faucet, fix the drip in the bathroom sink, put up the trim in the family room, finish the railings on the tree fort...

I remember when my dd was 10 and still let me make all the decisions regarding her clothing. Now that she's 15 we have found a common middle ground. We don't start back to school until the end of August, so we haven't started shopping for anything. I generally buy clothing through out the year as needed. Not so hard on the budget that way and I can usually get things on sale.

I wonder how my husband would feel about making one of those. Guess there's no harm in asking.

I have bought loose leaf notebook paper at Target for extremely cheap during their back to school sales.

I am lucky that my dd birthday is Aug. 2nd. I ask that every one who buys her school supplies along with other gifts. We home school now but she did go to public school for K and 1st grade. They start in Sept. after Labor Day. I have family that pick things up when they are on sale and I store it away for when I need them.

OK, we're a few years from needing bras as part of school shopping - thankfully!! And I'm really not ready to be having this conversation - we have about 7 weeks, I think. I got a lot at the used uniform sale at the end of the school year and I don't think they need much, anyway, until the weather turns cold. We have about two weeks where they need to wear long pants and I can't really buy for it till it's almost here because I've made the mistake of guessing badly what size they'd be when that time rolled around. Both mine do need a few new uniform shirts but I haven't gotten them yet.

What I'm looking at now are backpacks. Dd started first grade with a Kim Possible one from the Disney store. It held up well through 1st and 2nd. But she found this pink one at Walmart last year she just had to have - more like a messenger bag. It didn't hold up very well - one zipper broke halfway through the year. And my aunt got ds a Hot Wheels backpack from KMart for starting 1st grade last year - that absolutely fell apart! It did make it through the year but just barely and it looked pretty sad.

So I decided I should get a "good" backpack this year. Especially dd will have lots to lug around and really needs wheels. They're EXPENSIVE!! I guess you get what you pay for and I learned that lesson last year. I ordered ds this one. I got this one for dd but it came in the wrong color and they don't actually have the color pictured there - GRRR! I need her to pick another. I might go with one a little nicer ($$) just thinking about how much stuff she's going to have and the abuse it's probably going to take.

I think this site has good prices and there are good sales (one going on now). But I'm still choking at the prices on some of these backpacks! What do people really pay for a backpack?

yes, backpacks can be very expensive! my 3 have ll bean bookbags, which i think were around $60. they hold up really well (we've had them 9 years) and they are warrantied. i think if anything breaks, they will replace the bag.

Me either--we've got to get through 4-H week first before I think about school. Plus the garden is going to be coming on here soon, and we'll have canning and freezing to do.

I pay $50-$60 for a good Jansport backpack that will last many years.

I paid about $65 for my backpack, oh...I guess it had to be 11 years ago. It got me through five years of college carrying around some pretty hefty tomes, and since then has gone on multiple hikes and other outings, and not a single zipper is broken and it has no holes. I don't regret the money I spent one bit.

However, if you have a small child, then a less expensive, more appropriately-sized backpack might be a better choice.

Thanks!

We need a few spiral notebooks and definitely crayons and glue.

Anyone know if the rulers at Office depot are plastic or wooden? I like wooden ones much better!
