Speaking of Avatars...

I need a new one, but I'm not feeling very tiggerish. Likely anyone I'd make right now would be more Eeyore-ish.

Any ideas?

But yesterday it was a little more updated: in our hymnbook we have a few choruses that they will sing. So we sang I Will Sing Of The Mercies for call to worship. We also did Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us, and Gentle Shepherd, for invitation we sang Precious Lord, Take My Hand.

That's a good one!

As far as the special goes...most people at our church are not moved by anything if it's not 1) country or southern gospel and 2) about going to heaven.

Oh my! There's a women that usually does the prayer at our nursing home ministry visits. She basically reminds the residents that they're dying almost each and every time that she prays.

quote:

Ok...now tell me about yours--you played guitar yesterday instead of piano? When you play piano do you use a chord chart or do you try to play from staff music?

besiderself

Guitar's my weakest area, but we're short of guitarists which is why I play (I think).

Second Sunday--guitar (also sing while I play--or try to...learning how)
Fourth Sunday--piano
Occasional Fifth Sunday and here and there--sing

When playing the piano? Sometimes I only have chord sheets but most of the time have the staff music. The song determines whether or not I'll play the notes written or not. You know, if the song's more lyrical/has lots of embellishments/unique arpeggios and such (like "Grace Alone"), then I'll adhere more closely to the written notes.

As a piano player (note: not a pianist ), I used to be a slave to the written notes. Playing for church has helped me moved beyond that. God's developing a gift!

How about you? How did you learn to play and sing at the same time? Practice?

When I was in high school, my mom very wisely told me that I should learn to play and sing at the same time because I'd likely need that skill. For once, I listened to her.

BUT...I was a slave to the notes until I joined a church that played strictly from chord charts.

Being a relatively mediocre pianist in the first place, I can do it, but I'm certainly no artist.

My favorite time was in the last church we were in before this one. We had plenty of musicians, including a real pianist on the grand, so I was relegated to the keyboard. Because the music was quite contemporary and varied, I was able to add in the flavor...sometimes screamin' on the Hammond B3 organ patch or other times adding some celesta or water or ocean sounds on the worshipful songs...too fun!

Guitar is my weak area, too...by a long shot. In fact, I can't remember the last time I picked mine up to do anything serious with it.

I only play by chords on my 12-string. But, I've not played it in years. I can sing/play - but prefer to only play. I'm completely self-taught.

I don't have the coordination to play an instrument. I can direct and sing at the same time though...lol.

If I could have figured a way to sing 2 parts at one time I would have.

I can't even clap and sing at the same time. I can play percussion eggs, though, apparently that takes less coordination! LOL

Well, you could always try the standard "hum and whistle". But that's been done before...

Good day to everyone. Just wondering if anyone is on hurricane watch yet. I've seen there's a few storms lurking about and I was checking to see if everyone is safe from their paths.

Nope - I'm safe in my location. The East Coast of the US will have to keep an eye out on Christobal. Those in southern TX need to watch out for Dolly.

It went pretty well. We had a remote control truck demo in the parking lot. I got here early at about 9:15 and taped off part of the parking lot and it was sprinkling when I started and raining pretty hard when I finished with the tape. It rained until about 11 and then stopped. The club that did the demo started running about noon (which was an hour late) but they stayed until 3 (an hour longer than they planned). It brought in some new people to the store but the guys in club said they had 25-30 people who were new to hobby run the trucks. The rain limited the kind of trucks they could run to the waterproof variety. But turnout was good enough, despite the rain, that they want to come back and do it again.

LOL!

With the way that some of the meteorologists talk, you'd think that the storm surge COULD reach that far.

Yeah, that would probably be even less likely than a hurricane hitting me in ME.

I lived in FL for 15ish years and the closest I came to being in a hurricane was visiting my parents 4 days before Andrew hit.

I always miss the good stuff.
