Hi:

I sent out a resume. The company's website said that they would followup with me (if they liked what they saw). It has been 3 weeks. Should I call to followup? If so, what exactly should I say?

"Yes, I would like to speak with..."

Hi, my name is...I am calling to follow-up on a resume I forwarded to you a couple of weeks ago...

Then what? What can I say?

I would always follow up on both resumes and interviews. If you have the name of a contact person, identify yourself and ask for them. If not, ask for the person responsible for hiring for that particular position. Simply ask them if they have made a decision on the position, if not, ask if they know when they might and if you can call again.

I would make a phone call in order to contact the person and ask as to the status of the resume, if it has been reviewed and if you are still up for consideration for the particular job that you applied for.

Not to shoot anyone down, but if it is a big company, if they have not called you, they are not interested in you. I get these phone calls all the time. In reality you are one of hundreds that send a resume. So unless you were referred by someone, you will probably be told that the recruiter will review the resumes and contact the people that they want to bring in for an interview.

as you said that i think the company donot want to hurt you

or they have the right person now ,so he donot give you response

You need to be proactive in following up on all job contacts.

I posted in the other post about resumes for someone else.

Get the book "48 Days to the Work You Love" by Dan Miller. It's a good outline of how to do this. I do not get any royalties nor do I have any financial interest in the book or Mr. Miller's company.

I agree - the reality is that big companies get back to people they are interested in and don't get back to people they aren't interested in.

However, in an attempt to grow and understand, it will be good if you could ask them what was missing from your resume, what experience you lacked etc.

Large companies will not accept phone calls for follow up. Some companies send postcards or form letters when the job is filled though. Read the posting if it says no phone calls, then don't call.

If you can identify who would be the hiring manager for the job, then call that person. If you can identify that person when you are initially sending your resume, then send a copy to that person as well as to whomever the ad says to send it to. You couldn't begin to just pick up the phone and call "General Motors" for example to inquire about following up on a resume. However, for a locally owned company with less than 500 employees, this is not unreasonable.
