Just to name a few. What are your favorites?

"Fly Like An Eagle" by Seal. It was way better than the original! Wasn't much of a Steve Miller fan.

"Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann nd His Earth Band. It had a totally different feel than the original Springsteen version. I like the Springsteen version better cuz it's early Sprinsteen for goodness sake!

"You Really Got Me" & "Where Have All the Good Times Gone" by Van Halen. Sorry Kinks fans, Ray Davies can't play like Eddie. I also like their remake of Martha & the Vandelles "Dancing in the Streets". Didn't like their remakes of "Pretty Woman" (Roy Orbison still does it best) or "Happy Trials" (ditto for Roy Rogers and Dale Evans).

Evil Woman - Black Sabbath (Cream?)

The Easter Song - Keith Green (2nd Chapter of Acts)

Have You Ever Seen the Rain - Spin Doctors (CCR) not that much different but I liked the vocals on it better

Thank You - Duran Duran (Led Zepplin)

Son of a Preacher Man - Natalie Merchant (Dusty Springfield)

I also remembered "Rock 'n' Roll" by Heart. Ann Wilson sings it way better than Plant! I'm not sure whether they recorded it but I've seen her sing it live a number of times at concerts.

(I guess both of us are going to get the hard core Zep fans [sm=fireanger.gif])

McArthur Park by Donna Summer. Better than the original by Richard Harris. Donna's version was Number 1, Richard's was Number 2.
Keep Me Hanging On By Kim Wilde. Better than the Supremes oh I mean Diana Ross, oh I mean MISS ROSS and the Supremes. Both versions reached Number 1.

Have you ever heard the original? (1973 live version?) Way better than the 76 recording that got radio airplay. That one just hurts, and the seal version is too much like the 76 version.

Usually I can think of bad covers easier then good but I thought of some more:

Keep Me Hanging On - Vanilla Fudge (The Supremes)

Crazy Mary - Pearljam (Victoria Williams) They did to this song what Jimi Hendrix did to Watchtower and just stole it. ; )

Christmas Must Be Tonight - Compassion All Star Band (The Band)

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - U2 (Darlene Love)

Snake River Conspiracy has a great cover of The Smiths' "How Soon is Now." Except that no one knows who Snake River Conspiracy is. [:D]

I hold remakes in general in almost as high esteem as I hold dog poop. Having said that, here are a few exceptions (not necessarily as good but different and worthy of note):

"Under My Thumb" by Social Distortion. When you listen to it you feel that the song was always intended to be "speedpunk".

"Crimson and Clover" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. They made it more of a conventional early 80s rock song. Usually a 60s to 80s conversion is a very bad idea but I enjoyed this one. In 1981.

"Always on My Mind" by Pet Shop Boys. Hillbilly to Europop. Fantabulous.

"The Final Countdown" by Vision Divine. same deal as Snake River Conspiracy (as in who?). It sounds eerily similar to the original, even the vocals. Which was a downgrade for VD's vocalist. BTW: he's also the vocalist for the euro symphonic metal band Rhapsody. It would be an interesting pickup for fans of that band as his vocals are better and more varied than those in Rhapsody because he was allowed to write the vocal melodies and harmonies.

I second Hendrix' watchtower.

Here's one: "If I Can't Have You". Barry Gibb (Bee Gees) wrote it for Yvonne Ellimen (sp?, Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar) but the Bee Gees also did a version of it. So which is the original and which is the remake?

If you like Techno they did alot of great stuff. I love the long version of "West End Girls" with the mix of Sunglasses at Night In. I also loved their cover of "Where the Streets Have No Name" with "I Can't Take My Eyes Off You".

The two big dilemmas I had for this were The Animals version of "House of the Rising Sun" which was supposed to be a folk song but was recorded previously. I think they also had the first version from a male point of view. The other one was "Hey Joe" which was recorded a couple times I think and Hendrix I believe was the one who made the slow version famous. There were two other versions that I heard but not near as good- Deep Purple which was ok to decent and Led Zepplin's which I think may have been a bootleg but wasn't so good. Page was great but Plant sang that like he sang "Black Dog" which didn't quite cut it.

I tried to avoid the Rock tunes covering the Blues though many blues originals are excellent compared to the remakes. Delta blues is good but I consistently liked the rock covers better- Traveling Riverside Blues, Crossroads, When the Levee Breaks come to mind.

Summer Breeze - Type O Negative (Seals and Crofts) ; I love both, so I'll say Type O's version was just as good.

Gimme Shelter- Holy Soldier (The Rolling Stones) ; The Stones version was probably better, but I do really like holy Soldier's version.

Tainted Love- Soft Cell (???) ; This song was in dire need of a synthesizer!

Symptom of the Universe- Sepultura (Black Sabbath) ; Sepultura took this on to another level!

There's only one person who has ever outdone the Beatles on one of their tunes, and that's Joe Cocker. Two of the greatest covers ever are his versions of "A Little Help From My Friends" and "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window".

GNR did a bangup version of "Live and Let Die".

Stanley Jordan does an amazing solo guitar version of "Elanor Rigby" and Hendrix's "Angel".

Caedmon's Call does Rich Mullns' "I Will Sing/Hope to Carry On" in concert and does it better than Rich did.

No, no...his cover of "Tainted Love" is really good--gives a totally different meaning to it. The Soft Cell version, is of course, fab.

I love Van Halen cover of You Really Got Me. When I was a kid, they'd play the Kinks version followed by the VH version. Awesome!

Another one like that is Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo. Written by Rick Derringer and made a hit by Johnny Winter And.. which included Derringer as 2nd guitarist. A few years later Derringer did a solo album and that song was a big hit there as well.

I disagree. I much prefer Earth Wind and Fire's rendition of Gotta Get You Into My Life.

And have you heard the version of We Can Work it Out by Phil Keaggy and PFR? Really well done.

I have one more to add: ELO's version of Chuck Berry's Roll over Beethoven. Best thing ELO ever did.

And if we can leave the pop/rock for a minute, I love ELP's reworking of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

Wrong assumption, Dave. I grew up listening to Motown. The Temps, Four Tops, Supremes, Smokey & the Miracles, Harold Melvin, etc. Saw EWF three times and can say they definitely miss Maurice. Watched Michael Jackson grow from a mini James Brown to a distorted Diana Ross. Still listen to Luther. Am listening to Gladys Knight as I type. I think you get the picture. I've never heard those Rare Earth covers, so I can't judge.

The EWF cover of "Got to Get You..." is okay, but I'd rather hear the original. Other than Cocker, I just don't think anybody has ever covered a Beatles song and done it justice.

I always liked the slowed down version of Help U2 played in the '80s specifically on the Amnesty International Tour finale. I taped it off the radio since my el-lamo warner cable was down as it always was the 3 times a year there was something on TV I would want to watch. They did it like a medley with Maggie's Farm.

That has me thinking that even though there are some really good Beatles covers they usually don't top the original. Well... er... Marilyn Manson covering Helter Skelter but do I really want to go there? [sm=crazy.gif][sm=redfaced.gif]

Too wierd - I have "Rare Earth In Concert" in my CD player as I type this! What a great live album. Their covers were (usually) excellent.
