Oh boy. You are killing me today, Rachel! Those would definitely be cute... Maybe even doing some with flannel skirts, it gets awful cold here in the winter.

I'm wondering how you get that ruffled effect? My sewing machine is still acting up a bit, but is more manageable than yesterday. Tension is still wonky, but only when in reverse. I've cleaned it and rethreaded everything. Today I was making reuseable produce bags from a curtain liner that I picked up at the thrift store the other day. They're basically just drawstring bags, but the fabric is a bit like tuille, but sturdier.

I got that fabric at Wal Mart, Kim. They had a lot of cute fall prints, and Christmas prints, too. This is how I made the dress: --Cut off t-shirt to make an empire waist --Cut 2 lengths of fabric nearly twice the width of the bottom of the t-shirt (enough to gather) --Sew wrong sides of fabric together on sides, leaving top and bottom open --Going around the top, do a gathering stitch about 1/2 inch down, pull thread until the gathers are the length of the bottom of the t-shirt (my machine was acting up, so I sewed the gathering stitch by hand) --Sew right side of t-shirt to right side of fabric --Hem dress, turning under twice done! (applique if desired) Stacy, the gathering is easy, my Singer says to set the stitch length at "4" to do a gathering stitch, but for some reason I couldn't get the threads to pull easily, so I just did a gathering stitch by hand which was pretty quick and easy. Just don't backstitch, leave threads long, and pull until you have the fullness you want.

Kim, I picked up the fabric to make one and I'll write a little tutorial w/ pictures so you can figure it out. They will make a great beginner project.

Well, the dress is finished. I just need to write it all up and hope it makes sense, lol. And yes, you probably should figure out how you machine works LOL!

How do you ladies choose fabric for clothing? I use mostly quilting fabric in my projects, but I'd like to branch out into making things I could actually wear (shirts and maybe skirts/pants), but always get stuck on the fabric choice. Probably the first step would be to choose a pattern , and I know they have suggested fabrics, but those don't always make sense to me. I've tried just using the touchy-feely method, but I"m never sure what would make a good shirt. Ideas?

Awesome tutorial, Ryanne!! I was thinking this morning of doing that on my blog. That is a really cute fabric you chose for her dress! I couldn't resist . . . . today I bought Isabel a light pink t-shirt (looks just like the style you used for Gabby) and brown fabric with pink polka dots. I can't wait to make the dress tomorrow!!! I also found some ribbon that coordinates perfectly with the fabric, so she's getting a matching hairbow! I'll post a pic when it's done.
