I think Obama will chose someone from a swing state such as Ohio, Missouri, or Michigan, especially since the polls are extremely close in those states and he needs to win at least two out of the three to have a chance of winning. Or, he might pick someone from a southern state in an effort to make inroads in the south. As of the most recent polls, Virginia, North Carolina, and Missouri are the only southern (or border) states where he is even close. A southern running mate might change that. Or, he might also have to pick someone from the northeast because according to the latest polls Connecticut, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey are up for grabs this year. With the exception of NH, the others usually go strongly to the Democratic candidate for President. If he can't hold on to the strongly Democratic states, he is in big trouble! Maybe he should just chose three running mates to cover all the bases! [:D] McCain will probably chose a staunch conservative along the lines of a Ron Paul or a Mike Huckabee or a Fred Thompson or a Newt Gingrich in order to bring in the conservative base of the party since the base of the party is lukewarm at best toward McCain right now. McCain already appeals to moderates and conservative Democrats and has an endorsement from Joe Lieberman. That will be a big help but IMO he needs someone to draw in the conservatives like me who are leaning heavily toward a third party candidate if he wants to soundly defeat Obama in November. In other words, if he wants to win he needs to play ball with the conservatives and throw us a bone. If he doesn't, he is going to miss out on a large number of votes.
