Even the apostles acknowledged that they were dirt beneath His feet. It is not a denial of your eternal future with Christ; rather, it is an acknowledgement that we have not yet been perfected. We still sin, deserve death, but receive life everlasting!

Yes, that is what I am saying I think. Quite a paradox! Clearly, God's wisdom trumps human's -- but not because we say so or can even say it so it makes human-sense! -- We deserve death, but receive life-everlasting? Where's the sense in that? Not in human hearts it seems!

That's why I think another instance of this is that God is King and a servant. Perhaps if we find ourselves offended at the servant, then God the Father will be there to sternly point us back to the Son! Or the Holy Spirit will be there to break us of our hard-heartedness and stubborn refusal to confess our sin of offense at the servant.

So Ben, if you were a pastor praying for your Bible study group, would you pray like that, knowing that it may offend some?
Remember, I'm the baby of the group and I'm 43.

As Tinkerbell said, my prayers are between me and God. I only care what God thinks about my prayer life.

I keep pondering this thread, and I can't get this out of my head. The bible says: "Our Father Who art in heaven...." I am having serious difficulty in accepting "Dude Who's in heaven." The passage also says hallowed be Thy name. I can't see "dude" in relation to hallowed at all.

Maybe you don't. . .

I know people who's fathers sexually molested them their entire childhood.

They don't see "father" as being too hallowed either.

I think I would if the CEO were my brother or dear friend as is the case with Jesus!

What do you think about that?

I think you probably wouldn't if you were actually in the "office" environment. I know I wouldn't.

I have a very close relationship with my daughter. It definitely would not bother me at all if she referred to me as "chick" or "dudette". It is a term of affection.

Actually, due to transportation issues, I haven't been able to go to church at all since the beginning of June. However, there have been those who've been willing to give me a ride to this Bible study.

Why isn’t anyone “willing” to give you a ride to church? That sounds like a bigger problem than the pastor calling Jesus Dude in his prayer.

quote:

I'm sure God is going to be displeased with that prayer. Probably thinking to Himself, "I did not send my Son to die on a cross so that you could be yourself before me. Next time you better say it right, like, 'Dear Heavenly Father, Oh Holy One of Israel, all praise unto you, for you art worthy to be praise. I bow before thee with a grateful heart for Leah this morn. Allow your love to continue to shine through me into her life and to continue to be blessed by her fellowship Amen.'"

Ahhhh yeah, that'll do much better, right?

Love it!!!

quote:

Would you pray like that in front of your Bible study knowing that some of them might be offended?

I don’t understand why you would have someone put on a false self, so that you won’t be offended. It seems really self-centered! I would rather hear someone who can talk to the Lord like a friend than someone who puts on spiritual airs. When I hear someone pray and suddenly their voice and manner of speech changes, it sounds to me like they are being false. To me it sounds like they are trying to impress those around them with their “spirituality”.

quote:

I think you probably wouldn't if you were actually in the "office" environment. I know I wouldn't.

Hmmmm....but what if everyone else in the "office" were also his brothers, sisters, friends! Then it might still be okay!!!!!!!!!

Of course we are not always in the "office" environment with Jesus. I am blessed to be a part of a family of believers that is rarely in an "office" environment. Formality is not part of our thing, so I guess I don't need to worry about it much. But if I were in the "office" I would probably try to be more careful out of respect. But if "dude" was a regular part of my vocab (which it is not!) then it might just slip out.

Ben,

There is no person who is hallowed. That is part of my point. I cannot call God some endearing name because I feel that doing so is attempting to lower Him toward my level. I am not judging you at all. If you are comfortable with using dude or whatever, that's fine for me. I was just explaining why I feel the way I do.

Do you feel that our refusal to acknowledge God as anything colloquial makes us "brown-nosers"? That would be somewhat preposterous since He knows our hearts. I cannot see how anyone could possibly think they could pull one over on the Lord.

It seems a lot of this has to do with age and maturity level. The more a person matures (mentally and spiritually) the more they understand the concept of reverence.

Most of the youngsters around here have been brought up with an MTV mentality. Even in the schools these days, there is not any real authority. So where are the kids' examples???

Or maybe they gain a greater understanding of the intimacy of God.
"Dude", and similar addressing, is not a sign of immaturity in the believer. Nor is it a sign of maturity. It's a personal conviction, and a personal characteristic.

I can think of a lot of things that I can call Christ, but they are always with respect to Who He is.

The Bible study consists of about a half dozen people. At the age of 43, I'm the youngest one there.

I was very offended by this.

I don't know how offended you should be, but you are right that such terminology lacks respect.

In fact it would be easy enough to demonstrate this - next time your pastor is pulled over, have him repeatedly refer to the officer as 'dude' and see how he reacts. When he goes to court for the same traffic offense, have him call the presiding judge the same. I guarantee that he will find out pretty quick that those with even a modicum of earthly authority see 'dude' as a highly disrespectful moniker.

Christ's friendship and His desire for intimacy with us doesn't reduce His status as King of kings and Lord of lords, Creator and Sustainer of all that exists. Such a friendship is a grace to us and a exceedingly precious privilege - we shouldn't besmirch such a grace by calling God 'dude'.

True.

Jhud- my older brother used to be a police officer. There are quite a few names that we've called each other over the years.... some of them not-so-nice.

However, when he was a police officer, our names for each other would have been him calling me Mrs. _____ and me calling him Officer _____.

Jhud, the fact that you use a police officer and a judge as an example suggests to me that you have a, perhaps, one-sided view of God. I may very well be wrong, and I'm certainly not making a judgment of your relationship with Him, but the impression I'm getting is that you see God as, well, a police officer and judge, looking over our shoulders, making sure we don't do anything wrong, finger on the "Smite" button if we mess up.
Obviously, there are times in our relationship and walk with God that things are more serious. Some folks have said in this thread that they couldn't imagine calling God "dude" during Job's encounter with Him at the end of the book of Job, and I agree. However, not every prayer we have is like that! God is our daddy. Sometimes, yeah, daddy needs to enforce respect and honor, but sometimes, he need to play with his kids, read them stories, tuck them into bed, be loving and caring and tender. He is above us, but He is close, too. He is our King and Lord, and He is our daddy. And He is not going to crack down on us because we honestly and openly talk with Him from our hearts, no matter what the world's standards of "respect" may be.

I think Jhud was referring to an example of authority and respect, not a comparsion of Jesus as judge and police.

I'm sure Jhud will clear that up shortly however.

This is the point that's being missed by some (notice I said some ) -- we are not in lock step on how to show respect or use respectful words. Is there quite a bit of common ground on how to convey respect, i.e., accepted norms? Surely, but it's not finite because language is always evolving.

Let me say again that I would not use dude, because to me it's disrespectful, but I can see that it might be possible to use the term and it be respectful.

Again, from what Roberta said, I doubt it was respectful for this pastor to use it. It just seens a lame attempt at being cool or with it or relevant. Man, that is a turn off -- to suspect that someone is so weak to kowtow to looking cool. How's that for raking someone over the coals whom I don't know?

This point is what I am not understanding. Granted, language changes, but I refer to God in terms that are in the bible. Those terms have been in the bible for quite some time. They have not changed as far as I am aware (other than translation from one language to another). Father was father in 1611 just as it is now. So why suddenly have a generation or two that changes it because it feels comfortable? IMHO, respect is certainly sliding out the door at an increased pace the past few decades.

No, you're right, it doesn't. lol!

What I'm talking about is the fact that you are using words someone supplied for you such as the word 'friend' which is translated from philos. It's possible that 'dude' can mean friend and not in a flippant way. It's possible that given a certain audience, philos could be translated to dude, and believe it or not, that word could have connotations of the Almighty. It just doesn't to you and me.

Again, as for the pastor in question, I don't like what he did, and I've explained that in previous posts.

Lisa,

I understand your point. I guess I am just old-fashioned enough that I feel the need to hold on to the way things have been for many years.

At any rate, I do not think it is a salvic consideration unless the person speaking the words is intentionally derogatory. Then it wouldn't be prayer anywho!

oh, my friend, I'm old fashioned too. I can't imagine using that word when speaking of the Lord. Can't get my head around that at all.

And if I haven't said it, I will now. My kids do not use that word to address or refer to the Lord -- at least not that I know of. I was just referencing them to explain that I understand we don't all think of words the same way.

Exactly.

If God knows my heart, he knows I am less than formal.

Sometimes, I come to him just as a buddy who needs someone to hang out with. That's what my heart needs. I wouldn't call my best friend "Father." I call him "friend," or, translated in my generation, "dude."

I am not saying that I never say "Father" or prayer with respect to the Almighty Sovereign King of Kings. I surely do.

But there are so many levels and aspects of God, each of our human terminology will fail to capture all that He is.
