Again, if I were going to dinner with my Daddy, I'd show up in comfy clothes with only thoughts of enjoying time with him. But, I suppose, if I were an employee of my Dad instead of family, I might be inclined to dress to impress.
I will never compare my earthly daddy to my Heavenly daddy.
As terrific as my earthly daddy was,he was the closest the to perfect as anyone I've ever seen, but he was still very human. My Heavenly daddy is totaly perfect.Alwasy has been,is now, always will be.He is completly HOLY,entirely without sin.I stand in such awe of my Heavenly Daddy. And because of His Holliness is why I choose to be dressed in my finest when I go to church to worship Him.Even the angels bow at His feet.
I don't dress to impress, never have.I dress up out of respect for His Holliness and no other reason.

Do you think you are more holy in certain clothes? If so, do you avoid fellowship with Him unless you have your finest on?

I assume you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and that He is with you in the shower, the garden, or jogging.

My life would be much less enjoyable if I weren't able to worship my Heavenly Daddy except in a suit & tie and only in the church sanctuary.

You aren't going to win in this thread. I tried for a while and finally gave up. I didn't change anyone's mind, nor have they changed mine. They somehow feel that if it's good enough for lounging around in your home, it's good enough to go to church in. However, good luck. I hope you do better than I did.

I still don't think it's the clothes, but the attitude of "I'm better than you because I dress down/up for church" that is really telling.

Dave, I don't think any of us advocate going to church in our grubbies, I know I'm not. But we generally don't have a double standard about dressing a certain way to worship God on Sunday morning and saying it's out of respect when we worship Him at other times.

I have a Tux and my wife has one or two formal dresses. By the standard some have used on the topic, we should always go to church in Tux and formal attire because, after all, it's the best we have. So, if we don't dress in formal attire, then we are showing disrespect.

Jim, this whole thread started out when someone took my opinion about not wearing tee shirts and blue jeans to church (this was in the Rock and Roll thread). For whatever reason, he started this thread with that comment. My original intention wasn't that we should dress "to the nines," but that I preferred to dress better than the clothes I wear to work each day, which is usually jeans, a casual shirt (like a golf shirt) and comfy shoes or sneakers. It is just that I feel led to dress that way (dress shirt, sometimes a tie, not that often in the summer, dress or casual slacks, and nice shoes.

This brought about a bunch of comments about "I don't own anything but tee shirts and jeans" and "why are you looking down your nose at me if I don't dress up?" I wasn't (and still am not) putting anyone down for not dressing up for church, least of all you, Jim. You're one of my favorite people in the forum.

I just got tired of trying to defend my feelings on the matter, when it wasn't really all that important. I saw yustme heading down that same road and tried to offer my comments on what to expect.

I realize that God isn't impressed with clothing, but I do think he might care if I came to church dressed like a bum if I had better to wear. To those that don't own better clothes, please come in whatever you have. To those who have nice clothes, wear whatever you want. Only please don't wear the tux to church, Jim!

I just do not see why I should buy special clothes to attend services. I wear what I wear to the office, which are modest -- very modest by today's common standards -- pants, shirts, jackets, dress-flats, and often a hat. I commonly sit in the second row during services, occasionally sing with the music leaders, and am not in the least embarrassed by what I wear. On rare occasion, I will wear jeans -- maybe once a month, maximum, but this also doesn't embarrass me; I simply rarely wear them to either services or the office.

The bottom line is this: the Bible holds the bottom line on all things, and there are no rules in the Bible regarding what to wear to services, unless one is a priest in the Temple. The Bible says to dress modestly, but that is not for services; that is all the time.

I dress fairly casually for church, dockers and a polo or button down shirt with casual leather shoes and a belt, and I find myself being the most dressed-up guy in the service! Older men wearing shorts and flip-flops, younger guys with their underwear showing! C'mon!
I think the whole issue is a symptom of a larger problem. We've let our narsissistic, morally loose secular culture pervade our church culture. It's a rebellious, "I can wear whatever I want" attitude with a lot of people. With some men, it's the saggy pants, sports jersey, hat turned backwards look that says "I'm an adolescent, don't expect anything adult or responsible from me", with some women it's the spaghetti strap, tattoo peeking out teasy look that says "look at me - I'm hot, I dress to get noticed". Maybe that's extreme, but this issue it has roots in a rebellious, adolescent attitude.
Taking time to dress nicely shows maturity and conveys a seriousness about meeting the expectations of something larger than one's self. You don't need to dress to 'the nines', or even dress to impress. Just dress respectfully, at least once a week, for God the Father.

I've no problem with that, as long as one is consistent in their dress to church on Sunday evenings, Wednesday evenings, and during events in the sanctuary, including revivals and evangelistic crusades. If it's good enough for one service in the sanctuary, then it should be good enough for any other.

Do you think It would be ok to wear a bathing suit to church?

Is that actually what you think is a reasonable alternative to wearing the most expensive outfit you have?

IOW, our choice is either dress up like you are the guest of honor at a funeral or put on a bathing suit - which, BTW, I don't own because I haven't been to the beach to swim since high school, but that's another topic (maybe on modesty or holiness?).

What kind of price range do you keep refering to?You keep saying "wearing the most expensive outfit you have".What does price have to do with it?I don't have any outfits that cost more than $10.
I was just trying to get your opinion if someone came to church in a bathing suit.

Unless my heart is clean and prepared to worship God in His glory.... it matters not what is on the outside...

Think of it this way....

You've put a designer dress on a "poopie" diaper....

Would it smell any different if it were wrapped in a pair of daisy dukes?

Who has given you the impression they advocate wearing a bathing suit to church? Somewhere way back I stated that I wouldn't wear jeans to church but admitted that is because of a personal association. So I've never considered anyone showing up in speedos.

I usually wear jeans and a nice shirt, sneakers to church.

However, I also...shower....shave....put goop in my hair...clean my nails...and cleaning my nails, in the print industry ain't no little undertaking.

So while I do wear jeans its not like I just throw clothes on and go to church.

By the way jeans are much better than the clothes I wear to work.

I don't care if you wear a suit to church. If you think that makes you respect God more...I think I have a problem with that....and I know the feeling, usta do it too. I found out that it weas just another way that pastor of that "church" manipulated us to believe his church was a special place.

but why are you taking it to the extreme? Did anyone say a bathing suit or pajamas, or a wife beater and skivvies, are appropriate for church? It's not even appropriate to go to the store in. When someone says they go to church dressed casually does not mean such extreme attire.

I was thinking about this thread today and then reading it tonight I saw some more comments about "I wear jeans and t-shirt to work all week..." and I was wondering, what about those of us who already have to dress up M-F? Personally, because I wear nice clothes all week to work, the last thing I want to do is wear them on the weekend too. Not that I think there's anything wrong with nice clothes, I just don't want to feel like I'm getting dressed to go to work when I'm going to worship. I guess it's an example of how a different perspective can change one's outlook.

WELL! I've never written anything here that I had to correct in my LIFE! PSHahahahahahahahahaha!

No biggie, Dave. Good night, forgive me, please.

I think that I rehash them again and again because it amazes me that this is an issue, and I am both trying to understand why it is an issue and explain my side of it -- like maybe i wasn't clear the other 20 times.

Hey, everyone's entitled to one mistake in their lives, right? Now that I've made mine, I'd better not make any more. Actually, I did make one years ago. That was when I thought that I had made a mistake, but then found that I hadn't. That was the mistake.

This thread just confirms why so many churchs use choir robes, as tacky as they are.... it keeps the congregation from spending time judging the singers' clothing.

I have been planning to say this very for a few days. When I worked in banking, I dressed in suit and tie daily, wearing that on the weekend was like putting on a uniform. I usually wear "business casual" clothes to church but sometimes jeans and polo shirt. When I wore a tie daily I didn't feel dressed up because it wasn't my choice, it was required. In my current job I wear a tie sometimes so I do feel dressed up when I wear it.

My parents are the most holy people I know and they dress casual for church. I have friends that dress to the nines for church.... white washed sepulchres comes to mind.

My clothes do not express my holiness/godliness. They express my personal preference of styles, color, fashion.... that's about it.

Over the years I have worn suits, casual, dress casual and even jeans to church. Everyone say we are supposed to wear our best. I did.

I wore the best suit or casual or dress casual or jeans I had. Now I usually wear a suit and tie. I wear a suit and tie 5 days a week so I am used to it. But sometimes I do think I am wearing a work uniform to Church.
