See? Now if God posted such a sign in front of every church, we'd all know exactly what He wanted us to wear!

Does it make those in jeans more holy than me?

Depending on the holiness of said jeans.

Like, if someone ripped their jeans by getting up from the altar, then yes, they would be holier than you.

People who wear a shirt and tie are worse sinners than those who wear a tee shirt and jeans and flip flops. At least the people who are casual has good hearts than those who are stuffy and because they dress conservative thinking they have authority over things.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Bible say that we should dress modestly?
I've worn both dresses and jeans.
I now wear jeans because I don't spend the money to dress "up". That's not who I am in Christ.
My jeans are new looking, comfortable and clean. So are my blouses or shirts.
I don't get turned away for my dress.
I'm always welcomed because I come to worship and praise my God.

We thank you Father God for any building to come worship you.
We thank you for the mode of dress we wear to worship you.
We thank you that we even have you as our Creator of heaven and earth.
We give you honor, praise and glory that you so richlky deserve.
We pray this in Jesus Name,Amen

Man looks at the appearance (of both the "jeans are bad" crowd and the "ties are bad" crowd); God looks at the heart.

Some who wear jeans do it out of rebellion - "they can't tell me what to wear!" Some do it out of humility.

Some who wear ties do it out of self-righteousness. Some do it out of honor and reverence for God.

We as humans CANNOT tell the state of one's heart by the clothes on one's body.

PERIOD.

There are so many situations we get dressed up for in life. A wedding, a childs graduation, some sort of celebrations event like anniversary parties, the ballet, theatre, dinner with your significant other, and many many other special occasions. We would never once think not to do so for those occasions, we wouldn't claim its what in our hearts that counts. These are special events and we dress appropriately for them.

Church - the place you go to get fed Gods word, worship the creator of all things, the one who takes care of you and loves you unconditionally. Wouldn't even think twice about helping you. Hmmmm ..... nope not a special occasion at all.

Well, Dave, what I've posted was not "off the wall" like you said because attiudes like "It is nessasary to have a shirt and tie or for the ladies, a dress to wear to go to church" drives those people away who don't have conserative dress from the church, let alone some attitudes of ministers and Christians. Some people do not have a shirt and tie or a dress. Some do not have the so-called proper clothing to go to church, but people has this mindset that they say that "This is God's house and it has to be respected" attitude. Look, God's house is just a building, but the people in it are "the body" and the body is the real house, not a earthy building that will fade away over time.

If we had a brother in Christ who could not afford a suit, and most everyone else wore a suit to church, wouldn't it be possible that this may cause your brother to stumble in faith if he's sitting there all out of place?

Also, I've been to every event you mentioned up there (excepting anniversary parties, since I'm not married), and have done that in clothing you may consider less dressy or what not. Your idea of what is "appropriate" isn't necessarily everyone's. I don't know a single person who would kick me out of their wedding if I showed up wearing khakis and a golf shirt, or even jeans and a t-shirt, because I'm there out of love for those people, and they are my friends. Are you saying God is less understanding?

This just reminds me to be thankful that we are blessed to live in countries where we have a choice. In some parts of the world we wouldn't be having this discussion at all.

Good point.

Another thing, Biblical modesty is definitely partly about extravagance of clothing.

but it doesn't follow that if you wear a shirt and tie you are "a worse sinner". That is a pretty generalized statement, don't you think? If one day I wear jeans and the next sunday a dress does it mean when I wore jeans I didn't sin as much that week? I am the same person, my heart didn't change.

Yes. Biblical modesty is only about drawing attention to yourself, especially your wealth. It is not about enticing others to sin.

I like wearing suits. I don't wear them to church because I would be the only one and the fact I only have one. The one I was married in.

Clothes are not a big deal to me. Gonna hafta go to the store and buy me some shorts but other than that...who cares?

Of all of my problems, my wardrobe is by far the least important....and I hope to replace all of my clothes..and get a new wardrobe...when I lose all this weight...

and I ain't holdin' my breath either.

I believe we should wear what we feel comfy with to church as long as it's presentable, clean and neat. We should not be overly obsessed with the way we look and dress. Whether it's jeans and T-shirt or formal clothes, each one has his or her taste and comfort zone and we should not judge each other based on this principle.

Let's also remember that the church is filled with people who come from all walks of life and different social status and thus not every one has the same amount of budget that would allow them to dress in certain way and their social class. Let's not forget that many of the folks who come to church are folks who live in slums or unemployed or depressed or disability and the list goes on...

Right, Cloak.

But I will be the first to admit that the main reason I don't go to the concert I would prefer to attend is because I refuse to spend the money on the clothes I would feel comfortable in there. I would rather buy three or four outfits I can wear elsewhere, than spend the money on such special clothes, so I can attend an occasional nice concert. This relegates me to the university concerts, but why not do something in my small way to encourage the student musicians?

Furthermore, I would feel awfully silly wearing such clothes to services. I seriously doubt that G-d is disappointed that I will not be extravagant with my money, buying clothes that are above and beyond my common budget.

Some of the notions about Sunday clothes comes from folks living in rural communities. Their everyday work clothes got FILTHY. If they traveled, went to church, or even to supper, they changed into nicer clothes.
If these folks went to church in their work clothesi t was embarassing. Even trying to get them as clean as they could, they were most likely still a bit beat-up and smelly.
So it is not just wealth that established the ritual of Sunday Best.

It is also a nearness to that rural attitude that I do not feel comfortable wearing jeans to church - or even to Wal-Mart. Jeans, like overalls, were work clothes to me, not something to wear to town or social gatherings.

Along the same lines, where & when I was growing up, the worst possible thing to come to a date's house in was a pickup truck. Pickups were considered farm implements. It would have been as bad as driving her to the prom in a cotton harvester as a pickup.

Well, Gayle, your original post did not mention anything like what you have just explained. You made the broad generalization
quote:

"People who wear a shirt and tie are worse sinners than those who wear a tee shirt and jeans and flip flops. At least the people who are casual has good hearts than those who are stuffy and because they dress conservative thinking they have authority over things. "

That said to me that I'm a worse sinner than John Doe, and you're simply not qualified to make that assertion. It's very dangerous to make broad general statements, claiming some sort of moral superiority (my opinion of how your original post sounded to me). Your explanation above is entirely different and I can accept that.

On invitations to some of these events it says, "Dress code is formal/semi formal/beach casual/business casual....whatever.

I haven't received a notice from God telling me to dress formally for church. Just modestly and tasteful.

Yes. Biblical modesty is only about drawing attention to yourself, especially your wealth. It is not about enticing others to sin.

so, then what IS "extravagant"? And,what is not?

What is "modest"? And, what is not?

Sure, there are some "obvious" answers....but, there are many more "not so obvious" ones....

my church is quite 'affluent' in a north dallas suburb....home to many big-company CEOs, and other "C-level" types....(it's really cool to read an article about a guy in Fortune magazine one day, and then that weekend, run into him at church while he's teaching Sunday school class for 3 year olds!).....ask them what is "extravagant".....

in contrast, the church my inlaws in rural arkanasas go to, most of the families there have 5+ kids, and their household incomes are well below $25,000/yr. Ask them what is "extravagant".....

In summary....dressing "appropriately" at my church, and dressing "appropriately" at my inlaws church requires entirely different definitions of "appropriate"....

With regards to my church, yes, people do dress very well for Sunday church. There is NOTHING wrong with that. It's how most everyone dresses most of the time anyway (they are NOT out to "impress" anyone)....business casual/dressy business.....though, it's certainly not a "rule" or anything....our church HAS a very successful Saturday night service, which is explicitly more "casual" than Sunday mornings, and, there are undoubtedly some people who are more "comfortable" in going to Saturday evening services for that reason....certainly those of "lower income" would feel less "intimidated" by attending when people are "dressed down".....(even I was a bit intimidated for a while when we first started going to church there)

just as there can be no "dress code" telling people to DRESS UP for church, I see nothing that should "instruct" people to DRESS DOWN, either.....just have people wear what they are comfortable wearing....

again...as I mentioned before, there's still the "MODESTY" issue.....and, that definition certainly varies from person to person as to what is "modest" and what is not.....and, 3 people can be wearing the same OUTFIT, and it appear to be modest on 2, while immodest on the 3rd....being here in Texas, where it was well over 100 degrees yesterday, there were a good number of "sundresses" and other outfits that SOME may consider "immodest", while those that were wearing them, obviously did not....there really isn't a clear definition, is there?
