Thanks! Poor hubby was nervous, emotional and exhausted. I, on the other hand was calm and cool as a cucumber.

The Rabbi forgot the Shofar. lol! Ah well.

I am listening to Hugh Hewitt and he has a guest who was a reporter in the war on terror. He is talking about the culture in the Islamic states. He said the general rule for citizens is they can eat western and dress western, but they can never talk about not doing suicide work.

Now, my daughters boyfriend is planning on doing Aliah with the IDF. What is meant by Aliah? Is this Zionist or does it have a biblical basis? I ask this because I want to be fair, not because it is a problem for me. I just want to know if this is something that followers of Islam can point to as hypocritical?

Bluethread,

Do you mean aliyah? That means to go up and read a portion of Torah during service (going up to the bimah or podium where the Torah is to read from it) or it can mean to go live in Israel.

I do not understand this last part of the question:

quote:

I just want to know if this is something that followers of Islam can point to as hypocritical?

Hypocritical of what?

Thanks for the clarification. My daughter's boyfriend is probably doing his duty(aliyah) by going to Israel to serve in the IDF. I was concerned that it might be specifically related to the military and thus be used by some followers of radical Islam as a justification for their sense of obligation to promote Islam by any and all means.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Peace to your dwelling, brethren and sistren! I am not Messianic , never will be due to fundamental theological disagreements, I am Jewish Christian, but I do have (and dearly love them)some great, wonderful messianic friends, some are much, much more Christ like then I am. Having clarified that :)-

I feel compelled to help you here.

Aliyah means immigration to the Land of Israel. There are religious, cultural, and kabalistic meanings of that word, but neither means "duty to serve in IDF" in an isolated fashion. It is just immigration, or duty to immigrate as seen by some on religious grounds. Zionist history knows 5 Aliyah, or 5 "waves" of immigration. I slept thru most history classes, but there are actually certain years associated with those waves.

Service in IDF is indeed open to foreign nationals who don't have Israeli citizenship. It’s called Mahal, person participating in that receives temporary resident status.(Probably something similar to green card in States, maybe ?) Its a year and 6 months. ( normal service is longer for men, and girls do 21month usually)
There is Mahal Hesder – it gives you 9 months in yeshiva studies and a year in the military.
Garin Olim is for Israeli citizens that live in other counties, but wish to serve in IDF, if he qualifies for that.

These are 3 types of service that I can think of might be applicable to him, BlueT.

You have to - absolutely ! - be a Jew, classified as such acc. to the Israel Law of Return to qualify for service in IDF. That basically mean Jew by its halakhic definition – that is were burocracy and idiocy of Rabbinical bozos and Knesset freakazoids is most widely demonstrated. But that is whole another topic.

Blessings,
O.

Have you heard that this Rosh HaShana is the date of the rapture?

LINK

quote:

The End is Near!

A local priest and rabbi were fishing on the side of the road.

They thoughtfully made a sign saying, "The End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late!" and showed it to each passing car.

One driver that drove by didn't appreciate the sign and gave them the finger and shouted: "Leave us alone, you religious nuts!"

All of a sudden they heard a big splash. They looked at each other and the priest said to the rabbi, "You think we should just put up a sign that says 'Bridge Out' instead?"

Hi everyone.

Been busy but also been through some pondering as of late. I've felt a little disconnected and really need to get back into the Word. Not sure if this is the right place to talk about it so I will most likely just blog. lol

I am going to a Rosh Hashana dinner tonight. It's the second of two. I'm also going to a Women's conference. Perhaps after tonight I will feel a little more encouraged.

Every place is the right place.
We are to lift up, encourage, and help each other.

So, be encouraged, the answers are in the Word.
God bless you new family and may you have a great rest of the year.

L'Shanah Tovah to everyone.
Thanks!

But I can hear my daughter grumble (as she has every high holyday season since returning from her first trip to Israel) that it is more correctly Shanah Tovah (good year) instead of L'Shanah Tovah (to a good year).

Anyone else here? Have I been "left-behind?"

The traps around my pool enclosure survived. However, they had a hard time with the mighty rushing wind test the week before. 40mph off and on. Had to get a second set of tarps because the growing season went right up to Yom Kippur and they fit my garden beds perfectly. The frost did come before Sukkot, so I did finish my harvesting as the Scriptures imply and was able put a double layer on my sukkah.

I had curious guests for the weekly Erev Shabbat and my son and his girlfriend stayed for the weekend. The study group had one in another families Sukkah on the first High Day a in mine on Simkat Torah. There was a lot of cooking that week in between the Sabbots. Cleaning up when it was all over has given me a kick start on my winter projects.

I'm in no hurry to take the Sukkah down. I might put it back up next spring for a green house. I was surprised at how warm it was in the sukkah during the day.

LOL.

Does that mean if I build a hoop house I can use it as a sukkah?

I'm still looking forward to the day that the Messiah will once again
tabernacle with us in the flesh again.

Unlike The Tabernacle there is no blueprint in the Scriptures for a "proper" sukkah. Many of the sukkah kits I have seen are little more than plywood closets. Other people surround nice dining tables with shear curtain fabric. I personally see this as an opportunity identify with our ancesters in the wilderness, so I put tarps around my pool encloser and cover it with branches. I put clear plastic sheeting under the branches to keep the rain out and so I won't miss the flash if the Messiah should come at that time.

We had a slide show on the overhead on shabbat service during Sukkot showing sukkahs from all over the world. It is amazing the variety of style and size. Some were very elaborate and posh, and others very spartan.
