Sure thing, Christine!

So...the doctor's office just called me and I got this horrid feeling they were going to call and say I was pregnant. They didn't. But I do have a vaginal strep infection that has to be treated before surgery (the same strep they check for when you're pregnant). So high strength antibiotics for three days and then I'm sure I'll have more during surgery. Better start popping the acidophillus now.

Didn't Esther come as you were thinking about this same surgery?

No symptoms for the group B strep. It's something many people naturally carry and it doesn't cause any trouble...unless you don't know you have it and deliver a baby, and I guess it's an issue for this surgery too for some reason.

No, we were not planning a hysterectomy before either Levi or Esther. We were planning laproscopic surgery to clean out the endometriosis though. I didn't feel "done" before either of them and I do now.

Not to speak for Donna ... but I thought Levi was a surprise after Nessa's loss.

I just printed up information from kellymom.com on general anesthesia and pain medications. I have whole lists of what is okay and what isn't. I hope they don't give me a hard time about taking medicine and nursing. Even better if I don't need anything stronger than ibuprofen 800 mg...that would be good.

Lisa or others who have had surgery while bfing, what did you take for pain meds? Did you see any effect on the baby?

Well, I had a c-section and started to nurse immediately. I tried the 800mcg of Ibprofen, and it just wasn't enough. So, I filled my prescription of Percaset. They knew I was BFing and told me it was ok. Nathan seemed normal enough to me, and there was no great change when I went off it.

I would think that any effect on Esther would not be as much as on a tiny newborn baby. Does that make sense to anyone else but me? LOL

Percocet is listed under oxycodone (are they the same thing???) and is listed as an L3, which means moderately safe. It also has a note to watch infant for sedation. I would think if it was safe for a c-section mom, it'll be fine for me. My doctor said that he will only give me meds he would give a c-section mom. I just feel better bringing a list with me.

From the list, it appears to me I should be able to stay with L1 or L2 drugs...L1 being ibuprofen or acetaminophen and L2 being Toradol, Demerol, and Darvocet as names I recognize.

I had three c-sections and nursed exclusively after all three (well, they supplemented Dana a little bit in the hospital, but she didn't take anymore formula after we got home). But I don't remember what pain meds I was on. Big help, I know LOL.

Donna, I don't remember what I took (too much water under the bridge). I do remember I was on some pretty good stuff. I remember talking about it with my doctor because even though Rebekah was exactly 6 months, she refused to use a bottle at all. It didn't seem to affect her at all, although I do remember that she was very well behaved. She didn't seem groggy or anything, but was very content.

I can deal with that. She's already pretty content most of the time though...

I don't know if Esther will take a bottle or not. I've never tried and I don't intend to before the surgery. My mom will have some samples of formula if she needs something before I can feed her. She is prepared to deal with a mad, hungry baby. But I hope she does okay without me for a little while.

The answer to this may have been posted somewhere already, but is there some reason you can't have some breastmilk pumped for her to take while you're out of commission? Even at just a few weeks old, my kids wouldn't take formula without a fight. But they would take breastmilk out of a bottle most of the time, unless they were just in a stubborn mood.

again....hate to also answer for Donna...but she is one of the women that pumping just does NOT work for....some women just are unable to pump...even though they have more than enough milk as long as baby is actually nursing.

LOL, I don't mind, WOF.

She's right...pumping does not work for me. Actually, I intended to pump some during the first few weeks when I am usually engorged and pumping does work for me then. Only this time, I didn't get that engorgement. Of course. So I couldn't pump. I'm not too worried about it. One or two formula feedings certainly isn't going to harm her and if she is hungry enough, she will take it. If she won't, then she'll be good and ready to nurse for me when I wake up, and I'll probably be ready for her to nurse also. LOL Her pediatrician did tell me if they give me any trouble, to call her and she would come down and clear things up. She will also pop in when she does rounds and just check on Esther to make sure she's doing well with whatever I'm on. Very nice of her to think to do that, don't you think?

Very nice!

I couldn't pump either. I leaked something awful while baby was on one side and if my brain heard baby at night before I woke up the bed would be flooded but I could not pump.

Wow! Donna, that IS really nice of your pediatrician. In that case, I wouldn't worry a smidgen. The last thing those DRs are going to want is a lawsuit because little Suzie was help back in third grade because she was on drugs while mama recovering from surgery. (that is what they told me) So they are very cautious, and if anything they will give you a hard time and want to call your pediatrician. I wouldn't even take a list of different level meds for babies. I would figure that I had enough stress and would be more than happy to let a trusted pediatrician speak for me and deal at least with this one possible stressful thing for me so I didn't have to. It isn't like you don't have enough stress... share the wealth!

I am sooooo sorry Donna. I completely forgot about this thread until today!!!! I kep wondering if your surgery was coming up but you didn't say anything in the SAHM thread. Sorry. I never come into this folder!!

Anyway, I will definitely be praying for you.

So what does this next week look like? When will you be in the hospital?
Have you got everything covered for childcare?
How is Brian doing with the decision now?
Did you get some people lined up to help out with the furnace?

This week...tomorrow Brian has PT, Hannah and Noah have dentist appointments (both need a filling ). Tuesday, Brian has an appointment with his leg/hip doctor. Wednesday is my surgery and Brian also has PT scheduled since he'll be at the hospital for me anyway.

quote:

Overnight Wednesday. Hopefully only one night. The last surgery I had they could not do laproscopically and I was in 4 days. Would have been 3, but I started throwing up just as they were going to discharge me.

quote:

SIL doesn't have classes Wednesday, so she'll be with Hannah, Levi, and Noah when he gets out of school. My brother is spending the night here Wednesday night and most of the day Thursday, and the other overnights if I need him to. A lady from church is coming all day Friday. No idea for the weekend. LisaP's mom has offered to come and help and I also have a recently married young lady from church "on call". So I think we're covered, I'm just not sure who exactly will do what when, KWIM?

quote:

How is Brian doing with the decision now?

Okay, I think. He told me I don't have to do this if I don't want to, or we can wait until a better time. But there may not be a better time, and we don't want the endometriosis to get nasty again (I think it's already starting back up). So...now it is.

quote:

Did you get some people lined up to help out with the furnace?

Whoever is helping with the kids will also help with the furnace. It's not too awful cold yet, so that's good. Noah can do the furnace when he's home. And if we have to run oil sometimes...then we do and that's okay.

Thanks, Sandy, but I am sooooooo not calling on you while your honey is home! Nope. But thank you for being willing. Maybe after he leaves you can come down for a couple days, when we might both need some cheering up...

Ahhh, gotcha. I wasn't very great at pumping either. I could usually get together a bottle for church once a week, but that was about it.

My friend could go into the bathroom at work and hand express an 8 oz bottle in about five minutes. I was so jealous LOL.
