ORIGINAL: DenimDiva Well, I went to the ECM services this morning. The same church where I went to the Bible study Thursday night. This time I was blessed to chat with the elder in the church. She is a Christian psychic. I always thought that was an oxymoron, but I guess not. Roberta not be a problem but name the church you are talking about like First Church of Glendale CA.. Please? I'm talking about three different churches and I have no idea where Glendale, CA is. Crankius, I have no intentions of going back to any of them. There are churches that I've been to in the area that are much more Biblically sound. There are still a few more that I want to try before making a decision about which one to consider my home church.

Oh good. I'm glad you have some good options. Church shopping is not fun.

Has anyone read "The Heart of Christianity" or any other book by Marcus Borg? I saw it in my boss's car and she is notorious for criticizing Christians/Christianity and that made me curious about why she'd be reading it. I got the sample for my Kindle and read it and it appears to be a lot of emerging theology garbage. But before I spent $10 on the rest of it, I'd like someone to tell me it's worth it (in case I need to be prepared to argue against it). If it's just standard emerging stuff, I probably don't need to finish the book.

I've never heard of that book. Can you check it out from the public library or does your church have a library?

I'm going to check. It appears to be brand new and sometimes the library doesn't get books right when they come out.

If you find it, I'd be interested to hear what you think of it.

Federal Treasury agents who look for counterfeit American currency study only the real currency. They never never never study the many many many fakes. And so it is with the true Way. Study the bible in your rising up and your lying down, in your going out and your coming in, when you eat your lentils and when you lean on your doorposts. Ha Ha but seriously study

stella, I'm a bit familiar with Borg. He is, I think, a bit 'ahead of the curve' in the sense that I think his ideas are where emergent is heading. He is essentially materialistic, in that he doesn't accept as being true any of the accounts of the supernatural in the Bible. His take on Jesus is divided into what he calls the pre-Easter and post-Easter Jesus. The pre-Easter Jesus was basically some kind of wise guy who said some pithy things. The post-Easter Jesus is a fabrication made of by the disciples as a bit of propaganda for their cause. He does not believe in Jesus' resurrection. I don't think that he is a part of emergent, but they don't seem to have much problem with him. One emergent writer and speaker, Diane Butler Bass, even says he's a believer even knowing his take on Christ's resurrection.

If they were of us they would have remained but they went out, that it might be plain that they all are not of us. isn't that like a weird thing to say? it's like saying "folks get divorced all the time, but that doesn't mean they were every married". "fellowship" implies something, doens't it? and what happens when we superimpose your statement/position on the narrative of adam and eve? while it may not mean they were saved, the other side of the question must be gazed upon - that they were / are indeed. lest i tell peter that i hear a rooster...

Too many derive their bible study as "what the bible means to me" rather than a collective message to the church at large.

Maybe it just might be what Paul wrote; Jesus christ crucified and rose again 1 Chor. 1:23. The other parts of scriptures, is a person's own interpretation. Just as Luther reading something in scriptures and then posting it on a door. Why he disagreed with the pope or the main church of the time.

Proof positive that no amount of exposition of the Word of God is beneficial to those involved in a movement that doesn't believe in the ultimate authority of the Bible and that it is the only basis of the Christian faith...when experience and mysticism are given a greater role than sound doctrine, i.e., "there is a bigger, better, and greater story than the Bible."

Sounds as if this verse is the mantra of the movement; Judg 21:25 (ESV) 25In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

Strictly reading the wikipedia article, I found a lot to be agreeable with. Including issues on how to pursue evangelism, adopting worship and preaching style by community and its general focus on community. It appears as though it is a loose confederation of churches who preach different things so it's hard for me to pin down what the emerging church's doctrinal stances on things like the trinity, salvation through faith and God's sovereignty. But after looking up my denomination's wikipedia article (I was curious), the Foursquare Church is looking to do something that appears to be called the "Church Multiplication" effort. So, something to look out for in the future, from this movement.

Are you really saying that outside of Jesus being crucified and risen, that the rest of scripture simply each person's own interpretation?

My friend, Bob Botsford, did a great series on the Emerging Church. I like this little clip from it: You Just Might Be Emerging If... Check yourself!
