Gabby would have choked as well, if she had liquid in her mouth during the shots. I have to side with the Pediatrician on this one, lol.
Well, Gabby is a year old this month and I'm avoiding her 12 month check-up because I don't want to deal with the MMR hassle. We are not doing it for another couple years, I am getting boosters instead...

My 15 yr old son had to have his tetanus/dip vaccine to register for school. While he was there he also received the meningococcal and hep a vaccine. that was on Monday, today he woke up with a lump under his arm.
Have ya'll ever heard of this sort of thing?

Swollen lymph nodes are quite common after certain vaccinations. It should go down in a day or two.

I'd go ahead for the 12 month visit and just tell them you want to wait. Don't tell them how long. My doctor doesn't do the MMR until the 15 month visit anyway. He does the chicken pox at 12 months though, and was okay with us waiting (Hannah hasn't had it either). I don't think you'll get real pressure for the MMR until 18 months though, and maybe not even then, depending on how your doctor feels about it.

Can you elaborate on the "boosters instead" comment. What is that? How does it compare/differ from the MMR shot?

Tammy, the reason they vaccinate small children for MMR is not because they are particularly threatening to children, but because they are bad for pregnant woman and can cause birth defects. Because we won't be vaccinating Gabby, I will receive a MMR "booster" shot.
I know a child who contracted rubella, it's such a mild disease in children that the majority of the time it only requires tylenol for treatment.

You can also wait until they are 4 or older and just get the shot (or shots separately) once.

That's what we are planning on doing, but our current pediatrician is not open to the idea. We have to switch insurance providers anyway, and I have a friend whose pediatrician keeps them stocked separately in his office so I think I'll see if he is taking new patients.

Kidlet got her DTaP and Roto yesterday. Gets the other two next month with the nurse.
At first Dr wasn't thrilled but then he realized I wasn't declining ALL vaccines, just wanting to space them out and he was perfectly fine with that. I think his nurse misunderstood when I said we weren't getting them all done.
She was a bit fussy last night in between doses of meds because our timing got off but she only had med through 11pm last night and is fine today.
So far no marking/swelling from injection site.
Man O MAN did she scream, she was layin on the table, and all the sudden she screamed and pushed all her air out and just stayed there for a second. Then cried super bad and I immediately offered her to nurse, she would sucksuck whimper, sucksuck whimper. Poor babe.
AND had explosive dirty diaper up her back with some mucous in it. Stress anyone??
Rough day. We had lunch with dad and came home and just hung out and napped the rest of the day.

I always dread vaccination appointments. We have one shot, Hep B, next week to get my son caught up (we spread and delay- Dr. Sears). I have to ask if they can separate the MMR to only get the Mumps vaccine at 1 year and the rest later. I hope they don't give me grief.
We didn't start spreading out his shots until 6 months and I always feel guilty. I don't like vaccines but I'm trying to be responsible and not paranoid.

Gideon had a small reaction to his vax (DTap, Hib and polio if I remember correctly). A few hours after receiving them he got very fussy and fidgity. When he nursed he would suck a few times then wimper and squirm and go back on. Soon afterward he started crying uncontrollably, sad and pathetic, eyes closed. When I took down his pants to change his diaper his thighs were pink, puffy and warm to the touch. About 20 minutes after a dose of Tylenol he quieted and slept and was fine after that. This is the first time out of all three kids that any have ever had any sort of reaction. No fussing, wimpering, swelling, discomfort and I've never given any of them meds before or after. So my question is, if this has happened to your baby did you continue on schedule or delay the next vax until baby was older?

Tammy, we are delaying until Gabby is probably 4. Just before she starts school.
Julie, I would delay them, but we are delayed anway. Can you order the Sear's vaccine book and read that, then decide?

I can see if I can get it at my library. We were already delaying some (and not doing others) based on my other research and conversations with my ped (who I haven't talked to yet).

Ryanne - so you basically skip the MMR until age 4. Or do you have to do more after age 4 because of missing the baby ones?

The MMR is typically one vax at 12 months, and then a "booster" before they start school. I say "booster" because it's really given to cause immunity in the small population of people who are not immune from the first dose.
We will be doing around age 4, and then we'll separate out the components. I don't think you can get the MMR separately in Canada yet.

ok this is the vaccine chat thread.. I think I can ask this here.. I don't want to debate, I want feedback/thoughts.
What do you delayers/non vacciners think about the recent measles outbreak by an UNvaccinated child?
Infants that weren't old enough to have the vax caught it from him via the pediatricians office.

Here ya go Donna, that's the San Diego one.
It is from January/Feb of this year but still being talked about and spreading issues about vaccinations.
Thisone is another CDC article discussing the update and need for vaccination.

Oh, I think we already talked about this one...
What is your question? We don't worry about Gabby getting measles, although it is a possibility that she could contract them and spread them to a child who is to young to be vaccinated, or to other unvaccinated children. My only concern with not vax'ing her are the infants and potentially pregnant women, I don't worry about unvaccinated older children because I assume that their parents have weighed the risk of not vaccinating VS vaccinating.
