^ I know... My kids want to play with my "collectible - vintage" toys too; but I keep them up on a high shelf. Their little friends that come over are very tempted to touch; but I have "eyes in the back of my head". :)

I have a Holly Hobbie treehouse, a FP Record Player, Tupperware animal toys you put together, and a few other pieces. I want to get the FP Play House, but the price for the good ones on ebay usually push close to $100! Yikes.

Lol..I use foxy all the time. I have considered doing the same thing, collecting the vintage toys that I remember from my own childhood. I think it would be nice to see that collection grow. But alas the finances don't always allow...Oh well, maybe one at a time.

My mother still has the fischer price camera from when my "little" brother (who's almost 40) was a kid. It still works great after five grandkids. I don't think they make toys like this anymore -- might be worth collecting.

How about that fisher price pop corn popper, what was so fascinating about that thing anyway? My daughter almost wore it out!

You talkin' about the thing with a handle and wheels? Hey, I like that thing myself.

I can hear that sound. Don't know what to call it, but I have it burned in my memory. Kind of like the black screen sounds on Law and Order.

Did anyone have the set of World Book encyclopedias?

They also had the learning books that went with them with this big disc thing that you could open and put in this paper, then close it answer the questions to study for tests, etc.

I can't remember what it was called, but I do remember playing with that thing a lot and learning stuff that impressed my parents, but I have totally forgotten now.

We didn't have the World Book ones; but we did have the Encyclopedia Brittanica's. We had the black cover set, which was more for high school or college level; and we had the red cover set for elementary level. We used them a lot for school. They must have cost a lot for back then.

Do people even buy encyclopedias anymore?

Seems they were popular for awhile...but not so much now.

I'm thinking that not many people do anymore; because you can buy the software instead and it's all compact on a disc. (no more taking up two full shelves on a bookcase!)

Oh, yeah. We also had the huge two volume set of dictionaries and got the yearly books.

I don't know about the discs, but I had the Childcraft books -- still have them.

I don't know if I'll ever buy another set of encyclopedias. But I might; however, I've only bought one set since a good friend of mine, who is a long time high school teacher, has helped me get two sets that the high school was discarding -- yep, they were literally throwing them in the trash, and there is not one thing wrong with them.

Oh, and I'll never forget where I was when Elvis died. It was the summer after I graduated from high school, and I was working at a drugstore, and the radio station broke into the music to give the report. This radio station was pretty crazy so a lot of us thought it was a joke at first.

You remember who Dave Waddle was even if you're not into sports.

CHILDCRAFT!!!! That was it!

Were the dictionaries the ones that were really tall? We also had the handy little shelving unit they came with. And I remember that it was either the dictionaries or some other book that was really large and had it's own special place to sit.

I do remember Dave Waddle...cross country? or was it cycling?

One of the things we auctioned in my dad's estate two years ago was a set of Encyclopedia Brittanica dated 1960. Now I hadn't used them or given them a thought of course for many years, but when we went through the house to get ready for the auction, it started bringing back memories and emotions. It was tough. I don't know what they went for at the auction, and I don't want to know.

Connie,

Yes, they were HUGE. They also had tests in the front that were by grade level all the way through college. I felt like I was big stuff when I could pass all those tests.

BTW, I LOVED the Childcraft books when I was a kid, and my kids have also loved them. I remember the books with poetry, biographies and crafts. Those books are definitely more worn than the others.

Pammy,

My mom still has our set, and it's also from 1960. It is very interesting to read those books and the ones I have from the mid 90s. I hate to say it but the pc influence in the later editions is evident at times.

Me, too...I was a childcraft genuis!

Seriously though, those books and tests truly helped my little brother. He had a tough time in the early grades of school. He couldn't conceptualize very well and he would get overwhelmed. But the Childcraft stuff was awesome for him.

Does anybody remember American Girl Magazine? I think that's what it was called. And it was definitely a 70's thing. I had a subscription when I was about 13 (1977). It didn't have anything to do with the dolls that are popular with kids now.

Heard on the radio a couple of weeks ago when the station was playing a 70's CD that was skipping: "remember back in the 70's when all the records skipped?"

Lionel train sets.

Racing car sets.

Gas lines.
