Growing up I'd hear stories of people who remember where they were and what they were doing when Kennedy got shot, when the Challenger exploded, etc. I never understood how an event could create such a strong memory.

Until 9/11.

I was teaching 7th grade Bible at a private school, but I didn't have to go in until later in the day. That morning I had the tv on as background as I was getting ready to go to school, and as I passed by at one point I noticed that there was a plane crash in the World Trade Center. At first, I thought nothing of it so I continued my preparations and happened to walk by as the second plane hit. Confused, I sat down to try to understand what was going on. Of course, no one knew what was going on - the media was as shocked and frenzied as anyone else. When I heard about the Pentagon, I immediately left for school, knowing they would need my assistant. The radio was clouded with all kinds of innaccurate information and it drove a strange fear into me. Not knowing what was going on, not knowing what would happen next.

At school they had assembled the middle and high school students to brief them on what had happened. I knew that any lesson plans for that day would have to be scrapped, and we teachers were trying to determine how much we should protect them and the information they were receiving. Finally, we got the tv in the classroom working, captivated in shock. My 7th graders were as confused and terrifed as I was. I spent the next several days answering that question "Why would God allow this to happen?". Out of the despair I was able to teach about God's love and free will.

And yes, the suspended air travel was eerie, as we were about 10 miles from the Orlando airport. On Saturday I went in to work my shift at Universal Studios, and as I was walking through the park I remember thinking how strangely quiet it was. Even the people who were stuck in Orlando were in no mood to go to a theme park, and for several weeks the air of usual cheeriness was replaced with visitors who were still clearly mourning the devastation.

Three years later, I was working at Disney, and on 9/11 I saw a small toddler with a happy birthday button. As I wished the toddler a joyous "Happy Birthday", the mom had a semi-sad look on her face, telling me her child was born in 2001 on that day. Even a few years later it was hard for her to celebrate because of the memories of that day.

Anywho, I apologize for the long post in your thread, Tink. I probably share my story every year in this forum, but writing it out helps me to remember the day our nation changed.

Don't apologise! I'm so glad you picked here to share! *huggles*

It's great to be able to do so and I love it.

I welcome anyone and everyone to share their stories if they so chose to.

I definitely remember the surreal feeling and knowing that this was going to be one of those "Where were you when JFK was shot?" type of days. One of my teachers actually told us it was all a hoax... until he figured it out later in the day. I didn't get to see a TV til about 130 in the afternoon.

One of the weirdest things for me was how I felt the first time I heard and saw a plane flying overhead again.

We were hosting a German exchange student that year, and she had only arrived two weeks prior. Well, her parents looked at a map and saw how close Ontario is to New York, and tried frantically to call here to see if everyone was okay, but phone lines all over the world were jammed because of the number of calls being made. She finally managed to call through around 6pm, and I could hear her crying when she heard her daughter's voice.

FTR, I was in the rec room in the basement, folding a bunch of laundry when the news came on the TV ... I ended up getting a lot of work done in the basement that day, because I just couldn't bring myself to walk away from the television ....

Actually I had come in to work early so was downstairs in our building have a coffee. They always had a little TV on. Couldn't believe what I was seeing. My friend and I got into the elevator to go our office. One of the law students was in the elevator with us and didn't believe us when we told him what happened.

Mind you, I remember when JFK was killed. I was quite young (about 12) and it definitely had a very big impact on me. Also when Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were killed.

Oh I know, right?

I was going to yesterday but the internet was down at work and I have a hard time writing good long posts at home.

So I will definitely do so today.

Oooohhhh bribery! They'll accept bribery in the form of cookies!

Just tell them what you want and they'll make it...omelet, scrambled eggs, Belgian waffles, pancakes, French toast...whatever your heart desires!

So I'm spending Thanksgiving with mah hunny's family this year.

They have it at his eldest sister's house and she was VERY specific in insisting that we don't bring anything.

I still feel I should get some type of hostess gift, but am not sure what. FG pretty much voided wine or a decoration...so now I'm at a loss for what to do, or if I should do anything at all.

You know?

Depends on how Thing 1 feels. He's back to school but completely miserable. He caught what I had last week.

I'm just getting back to normal. My head is still stopped up though.

Ok, you said no decoration, but what about a candle? My son's fiance's mother came to visit a few months ago, and she brought me a very nice candle...in an earthenware holder, and handmade, with lots of herbs in it. It still smells heavenly.

And if not that, what about fancy coffee or coffee beans?

Glad that worked for you! Teas are also a good choice if you know the person likes hot tea.

Could someone PLEASE explain something to me.

I have been talking to FG for a couple of months and I kid you not...since he and have been talking men have been falling out of the wordwork to talk to me!

Men that would not have given me the time of day under normal circumstances...men who have seen me express an interest in them are now gracing me with an abundance of attention.

It's very frustrating because I'm wondering if I really am truly THAT different of a person now.

*sigh*

I've noticed that when someone starts a new relationship, that person tends to walk a little straighter than before. Confidence rises, and men find confidence attractive (well a lot of men)...
