Wow!! That's a really restrictive diet! I guess recipes aren't necessary!! I don't know of any ways to re-flavor a suppliment.

Laura, it sounds like your doctor put you on a very low carb diet. I know that a low carb diet works because I've been on one since December 2005. Although I'm having trouble staying low carb right now due to my cravings for carbs, I'm still losing weight.

One thing that helps me is to write down my food everyday. I track my food consumption on sparkpeople.com. I also track my exercise, read health-related articles and post on team message boards. It's a very good site and I recommend checking it out.

Yes, well done Melissa. And, I note that it's actually 2 1/2 years. &:)

I did low-carb (South Beach) for 2 years. What the doctor has me on now is a lot lower carb than even phase 1 of South Beach. He wanted my numbers to drop a lot faster than they would have even on phase 1.

That's a good suggestion for down the road -- when I can eat more food and have a bigger selection. Right now it's not that hard to keep track of. LOL! I'll tell y'all what I had yesterday as an example.

Breakfast: 2 hard boiled eggs
Lunch: 5 oz tuna, a medium tomato with a little onion
Mid afternoon snack: 2 string cheese
Dinner: 5 oz fish (tilapia), 1/2 cup green beans, radishes, olives

My "free" foods are up to 6 radishes, 5 olives, 1 slice of lemon or lime, 1 slice of onion, 1 scallion per day. Woo Hoo!

I have found that I feel a lot more satisfied if I have 4-5 different flavors in a meal. Radishes and olives add 2 flavors to a meal. I eat a lot of radishes and olives. LOL!! Also, fish seems to be the most satisfying meat. Tuna for lunch will carry me a lot longer than beef or chicken.

We did a lot of work out in the yard again last night. It really helps to keep busy and not think about food.

Hi Laura! Nice to see you here.

I've lost 95.4 pounds in the last 9 months, eating 1500 healthy calories per day. (About 120 net carbs) My A1c has gone from 8.7 down to 6.6, and I am now off insulin and glyburide (though I still take Metformin.) For me, it's been a slow lifestyle change, rather than an ultra-restrictive diet .... most of my carbs come from veggies and heart-healthy high fiber whole grains. I average 10 servings of veggies a day, in fact (and 70g of fiber, lol!) My cholesterol is now normal, too.

I tried a medically-supervised high protein diet in the past, lost a bunch of weight super fast (ended up with galllbladder and kidney problems as a result, too), and regained it all and then some as soon as I stopped and returned to more normal eating. To this day, it's really screwed up/slowed my metabolism. I won't do that ever again.

I do think that South Beach is a well-balanced, healthy approach to eating. As are carb-limiting diets (100-120g of carbs per day) .... but otherwise, I've just found that I need variety (and plenty of veggies and fiber) to help me achieve my lifestyle and health goals. For me, slow and steady wins the race.

Praying for your diabetes, and your success.

Harvie,
That is excellent progress. Congratulations.

Since I stopped staying strictly on South Beach I had been getting most of my carbs from whole grains and good veggies. While I wasn't strictly following SB, SB was still in my mind when I made food choices. I'm not joking about all the pot lucks and family get-togethers but even at those I was cautious. I still gained back most of the 70 pounds that I lost. One of the things that I learned about my body and metabolism is that I am very very sensitive to carbs. Phase 1 on South Beach was great for my metabolism. When I went to phase 2 I had to be very careful or I stopped losing and my glucose levels went up. Tomatoes made my blood sugar go up even when I was on metformin. Milk, regardless of percentage, makes my sugar go up. My cholesterol has always been good. As soon as Dr. G says, "enough" I'll head straight back to the Beach.

Now that I'm past the first 2 weeks the weight loss has slowed way down. I'm quite sure that most of those pounds were water. While I would love to keep losing at that rate (I want instant results in everything), I'm more comfortable about losing at a slower, steadier pace. I would be very satisfied to lose 2 pounds a week.

Praise God! I made it through another weekend without blowing my diet.

Saturday was a bit rough. We had to get up early (about 7 am) to get hubby to men's breakfast by 8 AM. He gets there early because he helps prepare it. My plans were to have breakfast with my SIL because her hubby & son would also be attending the men's breakfast. So, I drop hubby off at the church and head for SIL's house to pick her up. I get there and everyone is still sleeping.

It's almost 9 AM, which is when the men's breakfast is supposed to start, so I know BIL and nephew were not going to make it to breakfast, everyone was sleeping and I needed to EAT. One of issues with this diet is that when it is time for a meal I really really need it. So, I leave their house and head for a restaurant to get some breakfast. I call hubby to tell him not to expect BIL and nephew at the men's breakfast.

Right after I talk to him I have a mini (maybe not so mini) emotional breakdown on the way to the restaurant. I decide I want to just go home. Unfortunately, home is over 1/2 an hour away, the cost of gas is high, and I'd have to drive back to pick hubby up. So, I call hubby again. Tell him what I'm planning to do and he's like, "NO". At this point, I'm am very upset and hang up on him. I have never ever ever hung up on my hubby. I know what I need is food. It had been probably 15 hours since my last meal. But, I was in no shape to walk into a restaurant. So, I pulled into the parking lot of Cracker Barrel and just sat for awhile. I checked my blood sugar which was fine. I wanted to call hubby back and tell him I was sorry but I knew he would now be in the middle of the meeting. <sigh>

Finally, I go into the restaurant, eat my 2 eggs and drink 3 glasses of ice tea. After paying the bill, I wandered around their gift shop for probably an hour. Bought a gift for my secret sister. Even though it was an expensive 2 eggs it was the best money I ever spent. I felt so much better. When I left, I noticed that I missed a call from hubby which indicates that the men's breakfast was over. So, I head back to the church. Hubby was cutting the grass. He rides the mower up to the car, we apologize to each other and all is right with the world again.

Okay, that was Saturday. Sunday morning I made sure I ate before we left the house. We had a baptismal service (praise God) so that meant we also had a fellowship afterwards where everyone ate chocolate cake (with white icing) while I drank diet ice tea and watched everyone else eat chocolate cake with white icing. I told hubby he had to promise to take me somewhere good for lunch to make up for me having to watch him and everyone else eat cake. We ended up back at Cracker Barrel where I got delicious grilled catfish, green beans and salad. I'm planning on eating the second catfish fillet today for lunch.

Now for a progress report that helps me get through watching others eat cake. Yesterday, I was able to easily walk up the steps at church without having to hold onto the railing to help pull myself up. I've definitely lost at least 20 pounds. Soon I expect to be able to go down steps just as easily.

Now for a prayer request: Tuesday (tomorrow) night, the women's group is having a baby shower for our Pastor's wife. Of course there will be more cake, pizza and other "goodies" that are "baddies" for me. I will again have to watch everyone else eat while I drink a diet something. Naturally, I will make sure I eat before I go but it will probably still be really hard.

Weekends and church events are the hardest.

This is incredible!!

I'm praying for you about the even coming up. I know how hard it is, because it's hard for me to resist, too.

My diet survived the baby shower. I had a good tiime but it was brutal. I kept as far a distance as I could from the food table. But I couldn't exactly from everyone eating. There were TWO cakes. A decorated marble cake with white icing and a double layer chocolate cake. The aroma of chocolate cake was everywhere. I drank a lot of Arizona sugar free ice tea.

My next goal is to survive tonight's bible study at church...they're going to put out the leftovers from last night. I guess it's character building to say "no" when everyone else is saying "yes".

I saw Dr. G this morning. He is very happy with me. I've lost 22.2 pounds. He's especially pleased with my glucose levels. I asked him how long it is safe to be on this diet. He said as long as I take the supplements it's safe as long as I need. He asked me how I was doing on it, how I felt about it. I'm fine with it. He would like me to stay on this diet until I reach a much healthier weight. So, this is going to be a long term lifestyle for me. That's okay. It's working. I had to get blood work done so he can check my blood count and electrolytes and I see him again in a month.

Laura, I scrolled up but didn't see where you mentioned supplements. Is it a prescription thing or something over the counter?

I mentioned in a previous post about the possibility of finding a recipe that would make supplements taste better. &:)

I have a prescription for potassium. The rest are over the counter.

I have to take potassium, magnesium, calcium, a one-a-day multi vitamin, and fiber pills. yum yum

One of the issues I seem to have developed while on this diet is a bit of insomnia. I've had trouble falling asleep every night this last week. Last night was a bit better. I don't normally have trouble sleeping. I suddenly get this burst of energy the moment I lay down. I wish I had that much energy in the morning at work. I lay down and then for a couple of hours it feels like my body wants to get up and run around the block a few times. Wednesday night I gave up and just stayed up sorting and cleaning the bedroom until 2 am. Figured if I was going to be awake anyhow I might as well get something done. This wouldn't be a problem if it didn't disturb my honey's sleep and I didn't have to get up early in the morning.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Will it go away? Is there a solution other than pills? I did resort to taking some benadryl to help me fall asleep.

I'm quite sure it helps. LOL!! They are spaced out among the meals. I take a potassium and fiber at breakfast; calcium, one-a-day and magnesium at lunch; potassium, calcium, magnesium and fiber at dinner.

I feel like my life is filling up with pills. I also take synthroid once a day and another supplement for a completely different issue.

Thank you. I really am thankful that the pills are supplements and not medications (other than the synthroid). Which is exactly why I'm willing to stay on this diet for as long as I need to be. I don't want to add medication after medication into my life.

WTG, Harvie. Congrats on losing 100 lbs!

Laura, I know how it's like to watch everyone eat foods you can't eat. Lately I've found myself giving into temptation and eating them, resulting in a few pound gain and back over 200 lbs again. I'm having other problems too, depressed, feeling stressed, drinking lots of liquids and going to the restroom a lot, itching all over, especially my scalp, feeling tired, craving carbs, etc. Must be the water pills and stressed out over the bad weather we've been having lately.

I've just got to try not to let my emotions get the best of me and try again to limit my carbs and sweets, no matter how I feel.

Yep, yep, yep. It is so easy to give in to the pressure of eating "just a little bit". I've learned from bitter experience that I cannot do that--not even a taste. It just sets me up for a little bit more, another taste and suddenly those little bits become a lot.

My diet has survived another weekend. Saturday was pretty good diet wise. We were really busy getting ready for a cookout at our house on Sunday. (Yeah, I know...dietetically masochistic) The only problem I had on Saturday is that we went on what was supposed to be a short, not too strenuous hike. The trail we chose is a total of 1.3 miles. Problem was that towards the end of the trail the markings were ambiguous so we made a wrong turn and ended up on another trail--a much more strenuous trail with steep hills. Our easy 1.3 miles turned into about 3 miles of quite strenuous. By the time we left the park I was exhausted. When I got into the house I was in trouble. My legs were jello. I finally had enough energy to check my blood sugar. It was 77 and I think it was actually on its way back up by that point. I ate some cheese and did start to feel better but I was wiped for the rest of the day. Which meant I didn't get nearly as much done for the next day as I wanted to. The bonus of our extended hike was that the next morning my ketones indicated that I burned a LOT of fat and my weight dropped a pound.

My hubby decided last week that we were going to have a cookout on Sunday. He told others before he told me. <sigh> So, we had to rush home after church, put up a canopy, get the grills going, finish cleaning and straightening up what I could (never did get to the floors which are disgusting), make macaroni salad (yes, I had to make it even though I can't eat it), a tossed salad and other odds and ends. It was a nice time and I didn't mess up my diet.

Like I've said before...weekends are tough.
