Just read in our local paper that America closely follows Africa in numbers of preterm babies born. There was a list of reasons why (fertility-enhancement induced multiples being a biggie, of course) but elective early c-section and induction was on the list as well.

And then we wonder why we have such a high infant/maternal mortality rate as opposed to other developed countries.....

Hi all! I decided to switch to a midwife and birth center for this baby due in June. There is one only ten minutes from my house and I have had two visits there with the midwife and I just want to move in and stay. It's so lovely and she is fantastic. She will actually let me choose homebirth just about up to the point of delivery but I think I'll go there and try for a water birth. She has an enormous jetted tub for this purpose. Do you think she'll get suspicious if I just show up every night starting at 38 weeks claiming to be in labor and that I'd better get in the tub? ;) The birth center is attached to her home which is lakeside and it just reeks of serenity. I'm in love. Wish I'd done this with the last one.

my midwife actually does water-birth for homebirths as well if you desire it....lol.

I am not sure I want a water-birth....but I may labor in water. Water has a really strong pain relieving effect for me...I use it almost exclusively for kidney stone pain...and have been able to pass large stones without narcotics by just soaking in hot water.......(sorry for the TMI)....

Julie, congrats on your pregnancy! Your midwife and birthing center sounds like a dream come true! Oh how I didn't want to leave home to have my baby this last time! It would have been so nice just to stay home or know I could go to such a birthing center! I'm so very happy for you!!!

WOF, my midwife would do that too but I don't think I want a homebirth. I'll see of course, it's nice to be able to choose right up to being in labor. When I think of a homebirth I just can't get over the dog barking, the cats yowling, cat hair all over, the kids doing their thing. When I think of trying to relax through the contractions that's not what I have in mind. I know some moms love that sort of thing but it makes me tense. But I am open to changing my mind later.

That is good to know about the kidney stones really. I mean, what is TMI now can become VUI (Very Useful Information) later, right? :)

Tea-Tea, thanks for the congrats. I can't believe I'm saying that I'm actually looking forward to labor. Me! (I used to be very anti-non-hospital birth of all varieties, the sign me up for the epi at the first contraction sort. I was brainwashed at a very young age that labor was bad/horrible/to be avoided at all costs, you see.)

Julie, I never thought I would have been able to endure labor and birth without any pain meds or an epidural...but I did! I had a very negative epidural experience the first time...one I'm actually thankful for because it caused me to realize I CAN do this drug free! I've done a lot better recovery-wise this time around and I think it's because I didn't have any drugs in my system! The nursery nurse also commented on how alert Audrey was when she was born...and the head L&D nurse said, "It's because Mom didn't have any drugs in her system." THAT alone was worth all the pain!!

I almost made it the last time, on #3. I labored at home for the day, got to the hospital that night at 7cm. What I hadn't counted on was my hubby not doing any of the things I asked him to do (I made him out a list of things to help me with while in labor), he pretty much just sat in a corner. I also didn't count on my doc delivering 6 babies already that day and really wanting to get home. That is why, I believe, that she pushed Pitocin on me after less than 2 hours of laboring at the hospital and being "stuck" at 8cm. I was having a really bad time because I'd let myself lie down which is really bad for me, I always get back labor really bad if I lie down. Hubby was supposed to encourage me to try other things. He did not. I asked for a squat bar, the nurse told me "that's only for pushing" and wouldn't set it up. So when the Pit was mentioned I caved, asked for an epi, I got it, baby's heartrate crashed, the doc came in said I was at 10 and to push, three pushes and he was born. So the epi was good for all of about 5-10 minutes and I was disappointed that no one, not even hubby who was supposed to remind me I didn't want the epi and to help me, did anything for me. I just want someone on my side this time. And a jetted tub doesn't hurt. :) Or someone who cooks and brings me food and tucks me and baby in so we can sleep after deliver and who's philosophy is that mom deserves to be pampered and who makes house calls before and after delivery no matter the hour.

All of my babies have been very alert after delivery so it will be interested to see how this one is.

Julie, are you going to have a doula this time?

Not that I've planned at this time. I'll keep having conversations with my midwife and ask her if she thinks it would be beneficial but I told her that my hubby is a terrible coach and I'll be relying on her for that and she didn't say anything about getting a doula. On my first visit she gave me a video about her center and having seen her in action (at least as she's portrayed in the video) it almost seems like it would be redundant. I will ask one of my friends who had her baby with her last summer about her experience and insight.

I think if you are planning a birth center birth with a supportive midwife there is less need for a doula, especially in your case.
