I personally prefer the in-home daycare. I've had a better experience with them. The lady who watched my son when he was tiny didn't ever take a personal day other than the holidays the big daycare centers would be closed anyways. Plus, she opened her homes on evenings & weekends when needed (I was a single mom going to college...so I had to work sometime & I did have night classes some semesters). In 2.5 years, I didn't have problems with her. She became like an extended family member & loved on my little man when I could not.
Although I had nearly forgotten the horror story of the other in-home daycare. Hmmm....like someone else said...it really depends on the provider(s).
The preschool/daycare in Cali was very institutionalized. I just didn't feel quite at peace with him there, but I didn't really have much of a choice if I was to work (and had to so we could pay the bills). That's all part of why we moved...of course that wouldn't have happened if God hadn't told us to.
Anyway....for Yolanda's sake: here's my intro, LOL. I'm Megan and I have a five year old son who is in Kindergarten. Since I'm a special education teacher (K-2), he currently goes to school with me and we keep pretty similar hours. Other than that....ask! I'm pretty much an open book! My husband (yep, I've gotten married again...yay!) is a stay at home dad/husband at the moment. He'll be going back to school soon to become a Christian counselor. I'm also going to college as I am working on my masters' degree in special education.
Um, I was going to ask y'all to pray for us & our family. Lately I've been having a lot of struggles with being a working mom. DS seems to be having some trouble adjusting to school, etc. And I feel just rotten that I can't stay home with him to help him out. I did stay home with him over the summer (that's one nice thing about being a teacher). So I was able to help him with his learning. I just find that during the school year, I tend to get too busy helping everyone else's children while mine gets left to Daddy. It's tough (but y'all know how it goes at times!)
Quitting is NOT an option as then we'd have two unemployed adults in the home & too many bills!
Wow, it looks like I really opened a can of worms on the discussion of meals. Sorry, y'all. I'm just really trying to figure out what will work for us. We do have a church that participates in Angel Food Ministries in our area. One can get CHEAP boxes of meals from them. I know the family meal box is available for $20 and will feed a family of four 5 meals. Here is this month's menu. All items are things we'll eat.  Anyone can purchase the boxes. There is no community service involved, etc. We were blessed with one this month and we're planning to purchase at least one main box and one of the specialty boxes (probably the meal one).

However, on her days off from school and summer, she will be back in the same place...Our babysitter (K) loves our girls and our girls love her....

Does she go on a bus to and from school then?
Our school district will allow the child to be dropped off and picked up from a babysitter's house. Weird...

she'll go to before/after school care at the school. It's literally right around the corner from our house. BUT...i wanted so much for her to stay with K who she knows and loves....
Our school system can be a pain in the neck.

On the subject of dinner: When we lived in Colorado Springs there were several of the "Make a meal" type places in town--I think a couple of them were franchises, and a couple of them were local. A friend at church gave me a brochure for one, but it was not in a convenient location for us. I finaly realized there was a similar business in a shopping center near us, but by that time it was almost time for us to leave, so I never got to try it. I think with a family it would be wonderful!
We recently relocated (again) for DH's job, and I haven't even started looking for a job yet. Right now I'm doing the SAHW thing, so I'm cooking from scatch, counting pennies, etc, but if I were working, I'd definitely look into doing this.
On the subject of childcare: I left DS with two different babysitters when I first went back to work after he was born, neither of which I was completely happy with. He then went to a small, very personal daycare, and later to a slightly larger daycare, that we were very happy with. When the first daycare was on the verge of closing, and they started losing their best workers, I tried him one afternoon at another center that he was NOT happy with, but the 2nd one he was happy from day one.
It just all depends on the sitter and daycare--you just have to find what works for you and your child.

Those make a meal places are NOT handy to me but I have always thought that someone who sold SUPPER would do well if they sold it as a meal for four or six. The grocery store has stuff but it seems overpriced to me. I think that the prices should be less than a sit down meal but their stuff seems to be equal, but doesn't include a drink or roll. Granted those don't cost much, but I really don't want to spend $15-$20 on food, and then have to come home and ADD to it.

I've worked in several different day-care centers and there are ones I'd definitely send my child to and one's I wouldn't want my children within a mile of  They vary so much that it's hard to say "centers are better" or "in-home daycares are better."
I have the best dinner making service of all... my husband has taken over cooking since school started back up  Since he's still unemployed and I work ~50 hours a week, cleaning, laundry and cooking have become his responsibility. I make a 2-3 week menu and do the grocery shopping and then when I get home from work, I can read or play on the computer while he makes me dinner. It's actually kind of hard to just relax while he's busy in the kitchen, though. And he's decided that some of his favorite meals, that I used to make him several times a month, are entirely too complicated and just not "worth it." Funny how they weren't so complicated when all he had to do was eat them 
My first week of school went better than I thought it would. The first two days were horrible, but the last three were good, so I hope the rest of the semester goes well. I'd still prefer if my husband got a job and I could quit at Christmas, but if I have to work, this situation doesn't seem too bad...

We're in the same boat (or will be when the baby is born in December). With my husband out of work, I'm teaching and he'll be the one staying home with the baby. I am extremely grateful that one of us can stay home, but I really want it to be me! But as a teacher, I can tell myself that I will be away from home for a few months, and then I'll get a week off for Spring Break. A few more months and then it will be Summer vacation. And really, the main reason I got my teaching certification was so that if I had to work, I'd have a teacher's schedule.
I think some women are better moms if they work and some are better moms if they stay home. I know that there are many, many wonderful moms out there who work full time. I just don't think I'm cut out to be one of them
BUT... even though I've always wanted to be a stay-at-home-mom, the "mom" part was a lot more important that they "staying home" part and that's going to happen in a few months, so I have plenty to be grateful for!!!

I am praying about quitting my job and finding a different one the problem is my schedule my off days are when my kids are in school and I work every weekend and a couple of nights I can't go to church because I am at work so no this is not working. Pray for me for a new job better pay and hours weekends off and nights off.

Wow, Fawihtt....I guess I should be thankful I have evenings and weekends off as a teacher. Sometimes I forget that others don't have that. Praying!
Amy, yep, we're in similar situations. It feels SO weird for me to be the one working all the time while DH stays home. Do you ever feel that way? Well, I guess you would as you've mentioned that you feel a little out of sorts while DH cooks supper & you rest and/or tinker on the computer. In some ways, it's nice because I don't have to clean a house as much, or wash dishes (very rarely), or even cook (except weekends and some evenings). It's just definitely MUCH different than being the stay-at-home mom.

Church employee here, and we're closed tomorrow. Granted I'll still be working because I'm WAY behind on laundry. When will they invent clothes that wash themselves!?!

LOL Those would be great!
And I understand working even though you are off as I still have laundry to do (I think we've been on strike over the weekend as we haven't gotten much done). I also still have some IEPs to get entered into the computer. There's parts of 3 different ones left, but it's more work than it sounds like!

Huh? Thought evacuations were for Hurricane Gustav. Hit land as category 2 early today.
Anyway, I'm sick today...a cold. *sigh*
Guess it's MY turn as everyone else (DH, pastor, students at school) seemed to have it last week. I doubt if I'll get much of my work done. Oh well...taking care of me is more important, right?

not just wash themselves...but how about folding and putting away? I have 4 baskets upstairs that I just can't seem to get motivated enough to put away...
