Hi all!

I've been a SAHM for two and a half years and have been posting over in that support thread. Hubby and I have found ourselves in need of me going back to work full time because part of our income has decreased significantly and the economy stinks.

I wanted to come over here and get to know you all since I feel I'm probably going to need the support here like I needed it (and very much appreciated it) over in the SAHM thread.

My first day at my new job is Monday morning and I'll be taking my sweet little 3 year old daughter (I call her GB for Gorgeous Baby here in the threads...it was my nickname for her when she was a baby) to pre-school that morning as well. My hubby gets off his job at 3:00, so he'll be picking her up every day.

I'm not coping too well with the thought of leaving her and missing out on us being together all day, every day. You do whatcha gotta do, huh?

Looking forward to getting to know you ladies better!

Hey Mom! It's gonna be ok. Just be ready for "mommy-guilt".
I'm a working mom (well, custodial grandma) of 2 wonderful little girls, ages 3 and 5. I was working full time, in a career I love, long before these little ones came into our lives, and yet I STILL feel guilty from time to time. I was a SAHM to my bigger kids...until the youngest was 7 or so, and even then, he stayed with my parents (who were retired by then), so we didn't have to do daycare, or anything like that.
But...believe it or not, your GB will do just fine!
Have fun!

I know how you feel. I'm still a few months away from motherhood (baby is due in December) and every time I think about leaving him at home with my husband, I feel so sad. I know that we are very, very lucky that one of us can stay home, but we worked so hard for me to be able to stay home and then it all just kind of fell apart

I am NOT looking forward to school starting on Monday. I've been moved to a traveling position, so I'll teach half a day at my old school and half a day at a different school. I really thought I was going to be OK with it (not happy, but OK), until I went to the new school Let's just say it is very different from my home campus and it is going to be a loooonnnggg year.

Congrats!!! What a wonderful way to spend Christmas!

You know, we thought about my hubby staying home with her, but he's not that patient and I don't think either of them would enjoy it. They love each other, but they are like oil and water sometimes.

Ewww, will you have to teach at both schools every day? That sounds like a mess having to travel from school to school.

Yeah. I didn't think it would be so bad, and at my old school, it isn't. There, I still have my own classroom that I can decorate and leave things set up. It's a good school with good administration. So I didn't think it would be that big of a deal to have to travel... until I saw the other school. I'm sharing a classroom with two other traveling teachers, we have tables instead of desks (which, by the way, were covered in graffiti, most of which is definitely not "school appropriate") It's in a bad neighborhood and I wasn't too impressed with the administration. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think it's a very good place to teach. The ironic thing is, when I was hired by the district 3 years ago, I turned down a traveling teacher position, but told them to call me if they had a full-time-at-one-campus position open up Then there were budget cuts and elective teachers were left out in the cold. I actually have almost 30 students more than I had last year, but was told that the school couldn't afford to keep me full-time so they'd have to share me with another campus This sort of thing wouldn't happen to me if I taught a core subject

Well, just got to put in an hours work at home. Kay's stuck around ALL day and some parts of town have had over 20" of rain. We're cancelling church tomorrow, so as Communications Secretary, I got to call all the news stations and papers and update our website to hopefully get to word out to everyone. Now I'm stressed that I've missed something and someone will show up tomorrow that would have been notified if I hadn't forgotten whatever.

You just gotta love stress and doubting yourself.

I am pretty bummed though. Marshall was going to be baptized tomorrow, so we've now had to put it off for a week. But this means that my grandfather will for sure be able to be there. He's going to do the "dunking" (we're baptists) and this will be the third generation of his offspring he's baptized (my dad, me and then my son). How cool is that going to be!?!

Oh man, that SO stinks! I would think you'd be more marketable since you're not a one trick pony, so to speak. Too bad they don't see it that way. I'm in a very specialized field, but we get pretty good working conditions/benefits because there isn't much of a work pool of us in my area. I'm a Medical Laboratory Technician (do blood and body fluid testing in a lab).

It's really sad to me that there are any schools that are less than ideal to work for or be educated by. Those are people's precious children and their teachers have a great responsibility (and mission) and both should be given every opportunity to do their best. There are teachers in my family and it can be a touchy subject for me. I think there should be a lot more money (and respect) put into education and less to some places it goes. *Christi bites her tongue* God bless you for what you do.

Oh my.

I guess no matter what we do, we're going to wish we'd done something different/better, huh?

The last couple of days I found myself in tears because I thought of something I always wanted to do with her while at home with her and never did it (usually because of lack of money, but not always.

I know this is where God wants me to be right now in my life. It doesn't stop the occasional trip down guilty lane though.

I especially get this way over J's health. He is gluten and peanut intolerant - leads to migraines. Sometimes I have to make him go to school (otherwise he would simply miss too much) and ride out the more minor headaches.

My guilt kicks in when I start questioning whether I'm doing that for his good or simply because I have to get to work. But then my work acts as a good excuse sometimes because I know that without it I would be way too soft on him which really would be bad for him in the long run.

To explain where I'm coming from a little more. I have a brother whom I believe my mother and father brought up to be a sick adult. Yes, he has a disability, but they allowed that disability to be his excuse.

I don't want that for J. But then I get the guilts over whether I'm pushing him too hard.

Hope that makes sense.

Kylie

It's tough, Christi & others...

Mine is 5 & in school...let me tell you...that's hard. I'm a teacher at his school though so he goes with me there. The only thing is his classroom isn't open yet, so there's a time when he goes over to another school. Since I see kids in his age group (I'm a special ed teacher)....I've driven over there a few times as well. Let me tell you, I much prefer our school over theres. I'm so thankful that my son isn't going to school there!

Amy, are you teaching music then? We have a music teacher here who teaches at two different schools as well...

No, I teach Spanish. Even though my jr. highers will get high school credit for the class, it's still considered a "non-academic" course because it's not on the standardized test In fact, any kids who are in danger of failing one or more portions of the standardized test will be pulled out of my class once a week, all spring, to tutor them for their core subjects And my classes this year all have over 30 students... so that the core classes can have a cap at 25. Sheesh... The school couldn't "afford" to keep all it's elective teachers, so most of the elective teachers are being shared between two or more campuses. Every year, more and more funding goes to core classes and special education. I understand that those are important, it's just hard not to be a little bitter sometimes

Our school needed a full time Spanish teacher. I would have mentioned but I figured it was an awful commute.

That's right, Amy. I knew that, but it's hard to keep everyone's exact professions straight!!!

Yes, yes, I think that would be a bit of a commute.

The thing I really dislike about being a working mom is that sometimes the work spills over into the weekend...even though I am a teacher. There just aren't enough hours in the work week to get everything done. I've got to get IEPs updated & make sure I fully understand them as well as plan lessons for my students. So yeah....busy busy.

Oh & in my position, I'm in charge of my paras, so I have to find work or students for them to assist all day. That usually isn't too difficult. It's just the schedule & getting everything all figured out...

At least my son still takes a nap occasionally so I don't feel like I'm depriving him of Mommy time. DH usually naps too.....

Hope I can chime in here!

I work from home for a company called liveops. I take orders from the informercials you see on TV. LOL I take loads of the tobi streamer calls per the mention on this thread!

My children go to a Christian school, and lately I have had trouble with my connection with my internet....which effected my call volume and the paycheck! I recently have changed my hours to working during the night while everyone is sleeping. I get the kids to school, and go home and CRASH! Once my stats are better I will go back to normal hours!

I like position because I work when I need to. I have a goal of $700 per pay period, and I do what I can to fulfill that. We have a number of homeschooling moms that do this work. I have been asked by 800-flowers and papa john's to take on their lines recently. I like lifelock most of all I have to say! LOL Well Hip Hop Abs, Slim and 6, P90X aren't bad either!

WHEW!! What a week! I've finally had a chance to catch up here. I hope you all are able to get some needed rest for the upcoming week!

We have finally made it for our first week open. Dentes' Italian Restaurant is an official business here in town. We even got our "first dollar of profit" from the Chamber of Commerace. Our servers are doing pretty good. Well I should say the two girls have picked up on it really quickly, my male server, well it may take him some time. We'd love to get a more experienced server in. I'm finding that scheduling is going to be tough too. They have their school/curch commitments. That is why we'd like to get someone older in. So far we have had nothing but rave reviews about the food. Only very minor complaints about the service.

Nicole: the best unpaid advertising was getting involved with the chamber of commerce! I was VP for about 5 years in our local one, and it really helps your bottom line! LOL With your business I would get close with the membership director, and remind him/her that would love the opportunity to be mentioned to cater the next 'after hours' event! Make sure you ask about having the annual dinner at your place! The food place we think of most is the one that showed up with some cool refreshments for us after the parade on the fourth! Getting the business off the ground will be hard, and finding the time to do the chamber thing will be also. IT will help in all kinds of ways! If they are active with your local government - which we were - it will help in alot of circumstances! Have you asked about a ribbon cutting yet? Do it during the day where you get mostly business owners and government officials with plenty of little munchies! Business card draw for thank you notes, and what a awesome mailing list you start with!

What we have going for us is that we are the only Italian restaurant in this area. The nearest one is 60 miles from here. We are in a town of only 1,000 people. We've had quite a few people from out of town come. Our biggest gripe is that the locals are not very good tippers.
