Heavy lifting, vacuuming, going up and down stairs a bunch are all no-nos even after a vaginal delivery, so I'm pretty sure after abdominal surgery they're off limits too. No vacuuming? I am so glad I don't have your doctor and that list, lol! Way to restrictive for me...

I didn't have a list either, Erin. I was back to work within 2.5-3 weeks, I was shopping, cleaning, cooking, etc... within days of giving birth. Actually, we went shopping the day we went home from the hospital. The longest amount of real downtime I had was when Gabby was in the NICU for a couple days. I don't have time for that sort of thing and I felt fine.

ORIGINAL: clag4christ Heavy lifting, vacuuming, going up and down stairs a bunch are all no-nos even after a vaginal delivery, so I'm pretty sure after abdominal surgery they're off limits too. Yuu're absolutely right, Kim. From the ParentTime site, re activity restraints during c-section recovery: quote:
1. Your activity level will be very, very low for at least a month. You've not only created another human being, you've also had major surgery. Your body has been incised right down to the uterus, and it's going to take weeks for the internal and external sutures to heal. You will be told not to climb stairs, not to lift your baby in and out of the car and not to carry anything heavier than a coffee cup if you can help it for the next six weeks. Your abdomen, being right in the center of you, controls the way your back and bowels work, and can be felt if you stretch your arms up over your head right now. Ask your doctor how soon after your C-section you can expect to start taking walks, and find out what a reasonable amount of time is for walking. I totally agree with vacuuming being out of bounds too - not for the pushing it back and forth, but for when you twist and turn. It's often the swivelling, even slight swivelling, that can cause the problem. Hence ironing is best avoided too. And you also need someone to go with you for the grocery shopping, because the lifting and twisting as the trolley (cart) is loaded, then unloaded, then packed and put into the car, is not good for someone who's had a section. And that's quite apart from the dangers of lifting the heavy bags.

I've never had activity limitations either in either the early years (17 years ago) or more recently, but I've only had vaginal births. I didn't even have specific activity restrictions after I hemorrhaged and almost needed a transfusion. I know that there are specific things that one should restrict from activity after a c-section, but those are because it is major abdominal surgery, not because of birth. My sister (who has had 3 c-sections) has those restrictions, but I didn't -- same time frame for our births.

Christine, I know you love your Wii Fit and nightly walk but you want to calm it down a bit for a few more weeks. Bleeding, as has been said, is an indicator you are doing too much. My MW loosely told me that if I had a Csection there would be only one set of stairs a day for 4 weeks afterwards. No vacuuming or lifting more than the baby for 3 weeks. Seriously, the first 6 weeks PP some women have to restrict almost everything they do. If I walked too much I bled, if I was up and down too much I bled. If I stood making dinner too long, I bled. No pain but bleeding was my sign to back down and just sleep/relax and snuggle with the baby.

ORIGINAL: Brandy Christine, I know you love your Wii Fit YIKES!!! Christine, *please* tell me you haven't been doing your Wii Fit??!!!! If you have, no wonder you're bleeding more than you should be. Even the walks need to be measured and careful (and tempered with rest). How far do you usually walk?

ORIGINAL: Brandy I should have said Wii Fit YOGA stretches!! not to get Christine into trouble! Brandy, I'd advise against doing any exercise other than gentle walking after a Caesarean section. Abdominal surgery is major. It means cutting through so many layers, including muscle, and they need time to heal before before stretched again. As per the article I quoted before: quote:
Your abdomen, being right in the center of you, controls the way your back and bowels work, and can be felt if you stretch your arms up over your head right now. Stretching any part of the trunk is going to stress the abdomen. Women who have vaginal deliveries should not be doing yoga till at least 6 weeks after delivery, and for women who've had caesarean deliveries it should be even longer.

I think that depends on what you were doing before the delivery, for vaginal births anyway. I was back to walking a couple miles at a time within...2 weeks? of having Gabby. I don't plan on waiting 6 weeks to resume exercise next time either unless I have complications or something.

Wow I think its odd that people don't rest after a c-section. I know all my friends who have had c-sections are given a list (a print out, I've seen it on their fridges ) of things they have to avoid and the time limit. It just makes sense, you have a major op, you rest. Glad that you are doing better Christine.

ORIGINAL: christsstar To answer all your questions quickly: my bleeding is not coinciding with my level of activity at all. I've been tracking that. And as far as my Wii fit is concerned, All I'm doing is the breathing and yoga exercises and the balance games. Nothing too active. It's not actually "active" exercises I'm concerned about, it's stretching ones. Anything that stretches anywhere in your abdomen can cause a problem. quote:
My bleeding has gotten a lot better. It was just that one day, it seems. And the pain is non-existent now. I haven't felt anything since Friday. Very glad the pain has gone. Sometimes you can get an isolated rush of blood from a "pocket" in your uterus where it has accumulated, and then you move a bit more and it empties. Apparently many of us have irregularly shaped uteruses!

Here I am... we are at 6 days since baby came. She is just so precious. Thank goodness I went on my meds while I was pregnant, I am fighting PPD symptoms again, but they are 200% better than last time, I just notice a few things this time... no appetite, hate being alone, don't like it when it starts to get dark. Little things like that. I've been crying some too, but I think that's pretty normal. I had a 4th degree tear, and many stitches, but I find they are feeling better every day, so that's a good sign. I saw a nurse at the discharge clinic yesterday and she said that they look much better, so I'm glad for that. My hubby has been great with our older son, he's been spending lots of time with him, but that means they aren't around very much. I sure miss the little guy. My heart breaks for him, he isn't sure what's going on. I'm scared for next week when hubby goes back to work and it's just me and the two of them. I just have to remind myself that other people have had 2 kids before (or 3 or 4 or 5) I guess I'm just at a point where I get lonely, so I hope I can hold it together. I think we're in the middle of a growth spurt, and she's finally sleeping, so I'm off to have a shower now, have friends bringing supper and I want to clean up a bit. No questions, just venting....

Yolanda What happened in the end about your thyroid? Did they put you on any meds? In any case I'd advise you get it checked asap, because pregnancy puts a tremendous strain on your thyroid (which is why it swells in late pregnancy) and either your thyroxine might need adjusting or you might need to start taking thyroxine. An underactive thyroid can contribute to PPD.

I've been on Synthroid the whole pregnancy, they've checked my levels frequently, about every 3-4 months, and will be checking them at my next appointment with my family dr, baby's 2 week check up.

That's good!! I'm glad they are taking care of that!! (My second pregnancy was the trigger for my thyroid failing and going way under)
