I think the recommendation is three years in a row of negative results and then you can go every other year. Or something like that. Cervical cancer can be caused by other things. It is not an STD, although there is an STD (HPV) that makes it more likely for you to get cervical cancer. It's also one of the easiest to treat cancers if caught early enough. They'll also feel for abnormalities on the ovaries, and ovarian cancer is deadly because it is hard to catch. Many doctors also do a breast exam during that same appointment, so they're checking for things there too. My opinion is that, especially as wives and moms, we need to get these things checked regularly so we can hopefully catch a problem early on if there is one. Will you strongly urge your husband to have prostate and colorectal exams when he is old enough? I will, and to me, it's the same thing. We need to take care of ourselves as best as we are able. We owe it to our families. Off my soapbox now...

Kathryn, I lost all my pubic hair with my girls, but none of the hair on my head...with the boys, I had PP hair (on my head LOL) loss for A YEAR!...Seriously. I had two terrible bald spots on the front of my head...it was a good thing I started covering not long after Isaiah was born... LOL Sandy

I lost hair for the first 3 months after having Hunter and I thought it would never stop. Purejoy, at my 6 week post pardum check up I was dreading the pelvic exam. But, to my surprise it was the easiest exam I had up to that point and did not hurt one bit. All my other yearly exams had prior were very uncomfortable with me tensing up, just horrible. But, that exam and my yearly early this year were a breeze and they are not an issue anymore. I agree with Donna! I will go every year for my yearly appointment regardless of what the guidelines suggest. I owe it to my family and to myself to take every precaution necessary to remain healthy. I dread going just because who wants to sit naked in a paper gown and have someone you don't know well examining you...NO ONE! But, when the time comes for hubby to begin the fun little yearly visits men have he will have no excuse because I do mine.

Re: hair loss ... mine falls out for a good 18 months after having a child. (I'm usually pregnant again right around that 18 month mark). Nine months later it starts falling out again. And regarding PP bleeding, this time around was my shortest ever, it was just shy of 2 weeks of the heavier stuff, then a week of light, then a week of spotting. With my others, it could go 16 weeks or more of HEAVY (to the point of going to the ER for meds to slow it down so I wouldn't require transfusion)

I don't mind paps, really I don't. After having a baby, man, paps are a breeze. It's just that, well, they cost money. But we have insurance so, it's not a big deal.

This is for Sideways: Ruth, You're on pain meds after your section? Is that normal? Wow, you guys must get spoiled over there! What are you taking? After my section, when the general anesthetic had worn off, I had no pain relief. We were told it would hurt less if we got up and about, so that's what we did. The most pain I had was wind pain after the op, and of course when the incision pulled if I coughed or overdid it. But I'd rather feel that pain than not feel it, because it's a great reminder to stop and take it easy! Is your wound still leaking today? Are you going to get it checked out?

You have a major abdominal surgery and they don't give you pain meds? Here they were offering me percocet like it was candy after my extremely normal(not tearing) vaginal birth and acted astounded when I didn't want/need any.

Well, I won't say it didn't hurt, and they did say to let me know if I need any pain relief (but made it sound like it would be unusual to have it, and also better for me if I didn't).

Yes, indeed they give pain meds. I tried making in on just Motrin with Nathan, but couldn't stand the pain of getting in and out of bed. I'm recovering my faster this time, but I'm still better with some pain relief. Coughing is the worse part. My incision is better; Greg checked it this morning and saw only a very little moisture, if any. We had an ok night with Beth. She was up from 11-2am, and I knew she was tired but I couldn't get her to sleep. Greg stepped in and she was asleep in less then 10 minutes. It's all still a learning process. This morning was hectic, but I think we'll make it.

It tends to be the way you get out of bed that can make it hurt more. At what point of getting out of bed does it seem to hurt the most? Describe what you do and maybe I can offer some advice. Thing is though, if pain relief just isn't an option, maybe you tend to be more inclined to find ways of making the situation work for you. quote:

I found that sneezing was worse, as it was unpredictable when it happened. Oh and laughing, lol. I honestly think that your recovery will improve even more once you're off the pain relief. We were told that pain relief increases the risk of bleeding, I don't know if that's true.

The train of thought is that it is better to take pain medicine and be able to move, cough & deep breath, walk a little bit, etc. to prevent post-op complications than it is to not take it and not be able to move.

The medical community is far more willing to dispense pain medications now than they were 10+ years ago. (my older kids are 16 and 12) When I had my older dd, I had some pretty intense pain from the procedures that they needed to perform on me, but the only pain med I had available was acetominophen. I was very relieved after my surgery (for complications from the birth) because they had given me some 'real' pain meds and I felt much better. After my little one was born, I had a whole list of pain meds, some narcotic and some nonnarcotic on my chart that I could take.

The coughing I have to do must be pretty vigorous, as I am coughing up nasal mucus, and the doctor said I had to get it out of my body. Getting out of bed doesn't hurt now, like I said I'm much stronger then last time around. And I'm already reducing/spacing out the pain meds. And I have dH cop making sure I don't overdo it.

Went on a short outing this evening. Mostly sat and watched while the boys played at toddler gym. Then they dropped Beth and I off at home and went out for shopping errands. I feel ok but it was the most I can manage right now. Talked with a few moms about nursing in public and got some good tips and support. Even extended nursing is pretty common here. Had a small victory earlier. While dh napped I sat down and read to my boy while nursing my baby at the same time. Seems like such a little thing but I was proud and hopeful of managing this on my own.

Did anyone else here have a period of very little to no post pardum bleeding - as in just light bleeding for a few days. My bleeding seems to have stopped; it may start up again, but I bleed for almost six weeks with Nathan, and this is so very little. Beth continues to sleep a lot. I am not complaining, and while she does spend some of the night hours awake, or she'll drift off but wake as soon as we put her down, it really isn't to bad. Nathan actually slept better as an infant then he did when he turned 3 months (teething and rolling over hit at the same time).

When I had my C, by the time I left the hospital my bleeding was about done, or so it seemed. It was real light for a few days but then it started up again and lasted....2 weeks I think? Quite a while anyway.

I didn't think I'd ever stop bleeding after my first C, but my doc cleaned out my uterus really well with the second and bleeding was miminal. But I did have a little bit of start/stop bleeding for a couple of weeks.
