Edwards Vows Vigorous Campaign in N.H.

Jan 3, 10:21 PM (ET)

By NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrat John Edwards told The Associated Press that the Iowa caucus showed that voters are choosing change over the status quo, and he vowed a vigorous campaign into New Hampshire.

Edwards, who lost a close race to Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, said he would continue running as the candidate for middle-class Americans. Edwards finished second and Hillary Rodham Clinton was a close third.

"I mean, we were grotesquely outspent in Iowa five-to-one and the fact that I'm as strong as I am now under these circumstances indicates that this message of change and standing up to corporate greed and fighting for the middle class and jobs really matters," the 2004 vice presidential nominee said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Chris Dodd Bows Out

DES MOINES, Iowa — Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut was set to abandon his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday after a poor showing in Iowa’s precinct caucuses.

The veteran lawmaker was to announce his decision to supporters at a post-caucus party in Des Moines, according to advisers speaking on the condition of anonymity. He was expected to travel to Connecticut Saturday with his family to thank friends and supporters.

Dodd was never able to break from the pack of Democratic contenders despite his long and distinguished Senate career. He won just 0.02 percent of the state’s caucus-goers.

A coalition of leaders on family issues has released a letter warning about what they describe as the deception being assembled around former Massachusetts governor and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

"Most of us are not allied with any presidential candidate," the letter says. "But we are troubled by the unethical and Orwellian cover-up of Mitt Romney's role in catastrophic events in Massachusetts, once the cradle of American liberty.

"Actions he took as governor were beyond the pale," the letter continued.
RINO Romney..just wrong for America!

McCain: Negative campaigns do not work
1/3/2008, 10:00 p.m. EST
By PHILIP ELLIOTT
The Associated Press

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Sen. John McCain congratulated rival Mike Huckabee on winning Iowa's presidential caucuses Thursday and said it shows that negative campaigns — such as opponent Mitt Romney's — are doomed to fail.

Romney spent the final few weeks before Iowa cast the first votes of the 2008 presidential election engaged in an aggressive contest with Huckabee, a Baptist pastor turned politician. Huckabee resisted the temptation to respond in kind, instead relying on his wit and humor. McCain said civility is one of the lessons to take from Iowa's results.

"One, you can't buy an election in Iowa," said McCain, whose own financial woes have affected his campaign. "And two, negative campaigns don't work. They don't work there and they don't work here in New Hampshire."

And sources tell CBS 2 that intimates of Bloomberg have already had discussions about which states to target if he does indeed decide to run.

It is refreshing to see the rich, powerful and popular people seeking the highest office in our land grovel. We watch in awe, if not amusement, as those familiar faces trudge through ice and snow in Iowa and New Hampshire, eyes red from lack of sleep, hoping to attract one last voter or caucus-goer. As entertaining as this quadrennial occurrence may be, don't let the results from those two states sway you.

Despite all the close-up media coverage, there is only a relative handful of voters in those states who care enough to brave the harsh winter weather and the crowded conditions to rub elbows and eyebrows with the candidates and, chances are, you know as much or more about these folks as the people in Iowa or New Hampshire who had a "close encounter" with one.

Don't listen to the pundits! Stop up your ears if necessary. Don't rely on the polls! When the primary is held in your state, do your civic duty and vote for the candidate whom you believe will be the best leader for our country.

"I'm probably one of the few candidates you have ever seen that has the recommendation of (a National Education Association) chapter, but also has the strong national recommendation of homeschoolers," former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee told me in an interview.

This unusual polarity points simultaneously to Huckabee's greatest strength and potential weakness as a Republican presidential candidate.

Among viable candidates, Huckabee is the strongest on the most important social issues, abortion and marriage, which helps explain his appeal to the culturally conservative families represented by Home School Legal Defense Association Chairman Mike Farris, who personally endorsed Huckabee.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — It is a title that would be sure to bring either fear or cheer to many Americans, depending on your political leanings: Supreme Court Justice Bill Clinton.

That provocative possibility has long been whispered in legal and political circles ever since Sen. Hillary Clinton became a viable candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. Now a respected conservative law professor has openly predicted a future President Clinton would name her husband to the high court if a vacancy occurred.

Pepperdine Law School's Douglas Kmiec said, "The former president would be intrigued by court service and many would cheer him on."

Conservative Blackout+++NEW+++
By Lisa Fabrizio | View comments | Print This Article Print This Article

Candidates like Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson don’t have the ‘skill sets’ necessary to please the national media, but instead, have what really matters: true conservative credentials.

Back in the early days of the 2000 presidential campaign, right after John McCain beat George W. Bush in the New Hampshire primary, there were many dire media predictions along the lines of, “If Bush doesn't turn things around quickly it could turn into a McCain rout.” I thought: what in heaven’s name is going on here? Bush has all the endorsements, a terrific organization and wads of money. Could his candidacy be blasted out of contention by the machinations of the mainstream media?

Unfortunately for the media, the answer was no. Despite their best efforts, Bush regained his momentum in South Carolina — which, of course, prompted charges of dirty dealings — and went on to easily capture the nomination. Because once the process moved out of the realm of the polls and the punditry, conservative voters made their voices heard at the voting booth.

On this 1 I'd blame Thompson for running such a stealth candidacy..if he'd had made himself available..and held successful events, even the drive-bys would have given him more face time.

Analysis: Calendar Puts Pressure on GOP+++NEW+++

Jan 4, 8:06 AM (ET)

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) - An accelerated primary calendar gives Mike Huckabee little time to savor his Iowa win and Mitt Romney a fleeting chance to stage a comeback in New Hampshire, all while John McCain angles to seize the conversation with a reprise of his 2000 primary victory.

The pivotal moment in the five-day mini-campaign could come Saturday, when the GOP presidential field convenes in Manchester for their only debate between Thursday's caucuses and next Tuesday's primary.

For Huckabee, the challenge is to capitalize on his upset win in Iowa, where overwhelming support from evangelicals cemented a victory that had been projected in polls during the past month. It's a different story in secular New Hampshire, where he pulled only 10 percent of the vote in a recent survey.

(CNSNews.com) - Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee -- who won the Republican caucuses in Iowa Thursday night, just as the polls indicated he would -- will be all over the air waves Friday morning, trying to translate his Iowa victory into momentum in New Hampshire.

Polls show that Republicans Mitt Romney and John McCain are running neck-and-neck in the Granite State.

"We've learned that people really are more important then the purse," Huckabee said Thursday night. He frequently mentions the fact that he was outspent 15 to 1 by Romney. Nevertheless, Huckabee beat Romney, 34-25 percent.

Iran's Dangerous Nuke Game: Why Israel Might Rush to Strike

Iran turned up the heat this week on still-simmering concerns about its atomic aspirations. It crowed that its 1,000-megawatt Bushehr nuclear power plant would be "online" as early as this spring, putting in place another important building block of its nuclear program.

That sort of news can't help but rattle the steadiest of nerves, no matter what the (narrowly focused) US National Intelligence Estimate on Iran's nuclear-weapons program said about the current state of affairs.

Seemingly not swayed one iota by the NIE's conclusions, you have to wonder if Israel - the country most threatened by an Iranian nuclear (weapons) breakout - might take matters into its own hands.

Scientists Warn Against Religious Belief in Global Warming

(CNSNews.com) - Commentary from 400 prominent scientists from around the world, which was included in a U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee report released last week, warns of a religious-like belief in global warming in the scientific community.

In opposition to the "consensus" reached by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) last year, the committee report, sponsored by Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), presents writings and statements from scientists who expressed skepticism or disbelief in global warming throughout 2007.

"It seems that in the climatic area a new faith fight has broken out, which has all the characteristics of historical religion," warned professor Francis Massen of the Physics Laboratory in Luxemburg, one of the scientists included in the report.

Al-Qaida Uses Women As Suicide Attackers

Friday, January 4, 2008 4:00 PM

BAGHDAD -- Three female suicide bombers blew themselves up within a few weeks late last year in Iraq, killing or wounding dozens _ a tactic that goes against religious taboos on involving women in fighting and could indicate insurgents are growing increasingly desperate.

The bombings come as U.S.-led coalition forces are increasingly catching militants suspected of training women to become human bombs or finding evidence of efforts by al-Qaida in Iraq to recruit women, according to military records.

With coalition forces pushing extremists out of former strongholds and shrinking their pool of potential recruits, the militants are being forced to come up with other methods to penetrate stiffened security measures, said Diaa Rashwan, who follows Islamic militancy for Egypt's Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies.

WASHINGTON — Six months ago, the Bush administration quietly eased some restrictions on the export of politically delicate technologies to China. The new approach was intended to help American companies increase sales of high-tech equipment to China despite tight curbs on sharing technology that might have military applications.

But today the administration is facing questions from weapons experts about whether some equipment — newly authorized for export to Chinese companies deemed trustworthy by Washington — could instead end up helping China modernize its military. Equally worrisome, the weapons experts say, is the possibility that China could share the technology with Iran or Syria.

TONIGHT The Candidates Spin In Their Televised Debates!

quote:

THE NOTE: Alright for Fighting
Obama, Romney to be Targets in ABC's Saturday Night Debates

MANCHESTER, N.H. --

Ten presidential candidates (six Republicans, four Democrats) will pull up swiveling chairs and take to the very same debate stage Saturday night in Manchester for two of those encounters on the presidential calendar that merit circling in bright red (and blue) magic marker.

ABC's Charles Gibson has a bit of a different format in mind for the evening than we've seen in previous encounters -- more genial than gotcha, like a very chatty (and very well-lit) kitchen table. But the candidates will surely provide the fireworks: In this excruciatingly brief window between Iowa and New Hampshire, subtly just doesn't work.

The dynamics would be different even if the format was the same: We have the time crunch, of course, but we also have new frontrunners: "Barack Obama enters Saturday's Democratic debate as the undisputed front-runner with a bull's-eye on his back -- and a humbled and hobbled Hillary Clinton itching to open fire," writes the New York Daily News troika of Michael McAuliff, Ken Bazinet, and Michael Saul.

New Hampshire polls are all over the board, but the latest from Rasmussen shows Barack Obama with a big-time bump after his Iowa caucus win Thursday.

The Jan. 4 poll gives the Illinois senator a 10-point lead over rival Hillary Clinton, who placed third in Iowa.

The survey of 510 likely voters shows Obama with 37 percent, Clinton with 27 percent and John Edwards with 19 percent. Compare that with a Dec. 18 Rasmussen poll that put Clinton at 31 percent and Obama at 28 percent.

ABC News' Eloise Harper and Sunlen Miller Report: Senator Clinton just took the stage in a large auditorium for the 100 Club Dinner in the Hampshire Dome in Milford, NH. Clinton launched a new slogan with a sign that just says READY. The change message that Clinton has been driving hard was tampered down in this speech – and instead Clinton focused on being "ready to make the changes that America deserves," and on a "new beginning."

ABC New Hampshire Debate tonight

In a unique format, ABC will host two debates tonight starting at 7:00 PM EDT with the Republicans taking the stage at St. Anselm College first followed immediately by the Democrats 90 minutes later:

The network set rules to narrow the field. Candidates had to meet at least one of three criteria: place first through fourth in Iowa, poll 5 percent or higher in one of the last four major New Hampshire surveys, or poll 5 percent or higher in one of the last four major national surveys.

Democrats Joe Biden and Chris Dodd took some of the pressure off ABC by quitting the race Thursday night.

GOP Candidates Back Bush Terror Strategy in New Hampshire Debate
by Associated Press
Saturday, January 5, 2008

email | comment

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Sen. John McCain said Saturday night he alone among Republican presidential contenders criticized President Bush’s initial strategy in the war on Iraq, but he and the other leading hopefuls chorused support for the administration’s overall war on terror.

“We are succeeding now in Iraq. As we blame the president for the failed strategy we should give him credit” for current success, McCain said in a 90-minute debate three days before New Hampshire holds the first primary of the 2008 presidential campaign.

The Democrats are scheduled to debate in a similar format later in the evening.

Paul as usual looked the fool...Thompson more animated than last time..McCain & Romney a bit too negative.

McCain still can't fully recover from his linking hands w/ Teddy The Swimmer & Dingy Harry on that SHAM-NESTY junk bill.

At the end it was good to have both parties as they changed stage..to shake hands, hug or exchange a few words. Obama just sprung out there w/a new confidence in his step.

McCain didn't have the great one liners that he usually has & the camera shots & how some looked at Paul as a joke & a disdain for RINO Romney was evident in the body langauge.

New Hampshire: Obama 37% Clinton 27%
Saturday, January 05, 2008

Barack Obama, fresh from his victory in Iowa, now holds a ten point lead over Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the race found Obama with 37% of the vote while Clinton earns 27%. John Edwards is the only other candidate in double digits, with 19% support. Bill Richardson is the choice for 8%.

In a pre-Christmas poll, Clinton led Obama by three. In the poll before that, Obama led Clinton by three.

Clinton still leads nationally in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll but Rasmussen Markets data suggests the race for the nomination is essentially even.

Clinton to Obama: Stop Changing Positions
by Associated Press
Saturday, January 5, 2008

email | comment

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democratic presidential front-runner no longer, accused campaign rival Barack Obama of changing his positions on health care and “a number of issues” Saturday night in a debate three days before the New Hampshire primary.

“I have been entirely consistent in my position,” countered Obama, adding that he and Clinton have a philosophical disagreement over her proposal to require Americans to purchase health insurance or face a penalty from the government.

Obama won the kickoff Iowa caucuses last Thursday, and his remaining rivals — Clinton, former Sen. John Edwards and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson — can ill afford for him to gain a victory in New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary as well.

VIDEO: Hillary Clinton's Heated Response

Interesting, esp. @ the beginning the exchanges between Hell-ary & Obama....leading Bill Richardson to have maybe the funniest line of the night that he's been in friendlier hostage negotiations.

It was a contrast between the old timers Clinton & Richardson, who like to tout their resumes..although Clinton's is a bit padded & she's not too anxious for America to see her 1st Lady records...& the two younger pols.

Obama should have cut back a little on all of those speeches prior to the debate as you could hear the strain on his voice. And he got to rest his voice & got a save from Edwards as they later tag teamed Hillary.

Best performance of the night on the dem side: John Edwards..who made his points in a more clearer fashion.

CNN's Rowland Martin Suggests Most Pro-Lifers Are 'Hateful'
By Brad Wilmouth | January 5, 2008 - 19:15 ET

On Friday afternoon, CNN's liberal contributor Rowland Martin seemed to suggest that most people who are pro-life are "hateful" as he was describing Mike Huckabee's need to reach out to non-evangelical voters. During an appearance on CNN Newsroom at about 1:47 p.m. with anchor Kyra Phillips, Martin contended that Huckabee needs to pursue a strategy similar to that of President Bush in 2000: "Sure, [Huckabee is] a staunch pro-life person, but he isn't perceived as being hateful as other people who are pro-life." Among Republicans, McCain appears to have gained strength from Romney’s Iowa caucus loss and momentum through intensive campaigning here.

According to the new survey, the Arizona senator leads Romney by 6 percentage points, 33 percent to 27 percent. McCain has gained 4 points since the previous WMUR/UNH survey, taken before Iowa, while Romney has dropped by 2 points.

WASHINGTON - As presidential hopefuls chase after votes in every nook and cranny, a Christian author pointed to a significant voting block they might have overlooked.

Candidates, to their credit, have persistently pursued evangelical caucus-goers and primary voters without rest as they play a major role in determining the results in several early voting states. However, the author of Understanding Evangelicals: A Guide to Jesusland highlighted a potentially untapped reservoir of evangelical voters.

“As I wrote in my book, the nearly 7 million evangelical voters who did not vote in 2004 are the prize to win, not the ‘undecided’ or ‘independent voters,’” David Jeffers contends.

January 6, 2008

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton criticizes rival Barack Obama's record on abortion rights in a mailing sent to New Hampshire voters.

The mailer says that seven times during his time in the Illinois state Senate, Obama declined to take a position on abortion bills, while Clinton has been a defender of abortion rights.

During his eight years in the legislature, Obama cast a number of votes on abortion and received a 100 percent rating from the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council for his support of abortion rights, family planning services and health insurance coverage for female contraceptives. He voted against requiring medical care for aborted babies who survive, a vote that especially riled abortion opponents.

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Mitt Romney and John McCain sparred Sunday over their tax and spending records and who was a better agent for change, in the second Republican debate in as many days as the clock wound down to the New Hampshire primary.

"You have a choice," Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, said after ticking off his accomplishments in office. "You can select somebody who wants to fight for those things, or you can select somebody who's actually done those things."

McCain listed the pork-barrel spending he has exposed, as well as an Air Force tanker contract he squashed, before responding: "I think it was a reason why I wasn't elected Miss Congeniality in the Senate. I have a record of saving billions of dollars."

Speaking in tax-averse New Hampshire ahead of Tuesday’s primary, the five GOP candidates polling 10 percent or higher nationally ripped at each other’s records while striving to capture the essence of Ronald Reagan that the Republican base hopes to recover 20 years after the 40th president’s departure from Washington.

But immediately dispensing with Reagan’s 11th commandment not to speak ill of other Republicans, Mitt Romney laid the first blow on his top rival, John McCain.

MENACE FAUX POPULISM OF HUCK, EDWARDS
By GEORGE F. WILL

January 6, 2008 -- Like Job after losing his camels and acquiring boils, the conservative movement is in distress. Mike Huckabee shreds the compact that has held the movement's two tendencies in sometimes uneasy equipoise. Social conservatives, many of whom share Huckabee's desire to “take back this nation for Christ," have collaborated with limited-government, market-oriented, capitalism-defending conservatives who want to take back the nation for James Madison. Under the doctrine that conservatives call “fusion," each faction has respected the other's agenda. Huckabee aggressively repudiates the Madisonians.

He and John Edwards, flaunting their histrionic humility in order to promote their curdled populism, hawked strikingly similar messages in Iowa, encouraging self-pity and economic hypochondria. Edwards and Huckabee lament a shrinking middle class. Well.

Economist Stephen Rose, defining the middle class as households with annual incomes between $30,000 and $100,000, says a smaller percentage of Americans are in that category than in 1979 - because the percentage of Americans earning more than $100,000 has doubled from 12 to 24, while the percentage earning less than $30,000 is unchanged. “So," Rose says, “the entire ‘decline' of the middle class came from people moving up the income ladder." Even as housing values declined in 2007, the net worth of households increased.

THE STARK headline appeared just over a year ago. "2007 to be 'warmest on record,' " BBC News reported on Jan. 4, 2007. Citing experts in the British government's Meteorological Office, the story announced that "the world is likely to experience the warmest year on record in 2007," surpassing the all-time high reached in 1998.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the planetary hot flash: Much of the planet grew bitterly cold.

In South America, for example, the start of winter last year was one of the coldest ever observed. According to Eugenio Hackbart, chief meteorologist of the MetSul Weather Center in Brazil, "a brutal cold wave brought record low temperatures, widespread frost, snow, and major energy disruption." In Buenos Aires, it snowed for the first time in 89 years, while in Peru the cold was so intense that hundreds of people died and the government declared a state of emergency in 14 of the country's 24 provinces. In August, Chile's agriculture minister lamented "the toughest winter we have seen in the past 50 years," which caused losses of at least $200 million in destroyed crops and livestock.

Facing a double-digit defeat in New Hampshire, a sudden collapse in national polls and an expected fund-raising drought, Senator Hillary Clinton is preparing for a tough decision: Does she get out of the race? And when?!

"She can't take multiple double-digit losses in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada," laments one top campaign insider to the DRUDGE REPORT. "If she gets too badly embarrassed, it will really harm her. She doesn't want the Clinton brand to be damaged with back-to-back-to-back defeats."

Meanwhile, Democrat hopeful John Edwards has confided to senior staff that he is staying in the race because Hillary "could soon be out."

In a recent mailing to voters in New Hampshire, Hillary criticizes Obama for voting "present" instead of in favor of pro-abortion legislature on seven occasions. The mailer claims Clinton is a person who will "stand up for women's right to choose."

Obama has received a rating of 100% from Planned Parenthood, based on his voting record as an Illinois senator.

This may be what prompted Clinton to play the gender card in the New Hampshire Democratic debate on Saturday night. She said that her potential to become the first female president helps make her an "agent of change," a characteristic that has polled highly among female Democratic voters.

"But I think I am an agent of change. I embody change," Clinton volunteered in the debate. "I think having the first woman president is a huge change with consequences across our country and the world."

Also not good for Hillary...she needs the women's vote.Also, not good is her having to bus in people for rallies, as Obama's crowds are SRO & many not being able to cramp in to his meeting halls:

She got rocked in Iowa last week, and things aren't looking good in New Hampshire tomorrow.

I guess that means it's time for the smartest woman in the world to choke up on camera, and tug at the heartstrings of folks that are easy prey for such passion plays.

For those fortunate enough to have missed it, ABCNews.com has posted a video of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) getting a bit misty Monday about how things are going on the campaign trail lately.

Imagine if Mitt Romney’s church proclaimed on its website that it is “unashamedly white.”

The media would pounce, and Romney’s presidential candidacy would be over.
Yet that is exactly what Barack Obama’s church says on its web site — except in reverse.

“We are a congregation which is unashamedly black and unapologetically Christian,” says the Trinity United Church of Christ’s website in Chicago. “We are an African people and remain true to our native land, the mother continent, the cradle of civilization.”

January 7, 2008 -- CAMPAIGN-finance regulations keep on wrecking havoc with America's elec tions, entrenching incumbents and reducing voter turnout. Now they could help make Mayor Bloomberg our next President or at least give him great influence over who wins.

Bloomberg is reportedly talking of devoting $1 billion of his own money to win the White House as an independent - vastly outspending any conceivable combined outlays by the Republican and Democratic nominees, even if they forego public financing.

ABC's GMA Devotes 15 Minutes to Dem Race; 31 seconds to GOP

By Scott Whitlock | January 7, 2008 - 16:28 ET

Are the two major political parties hosting primaries this winter? Or is it just the Democrats? Viewers who saw Monday's edition of "Good Morning America" might assume the latter. The ABC program devoted a lopsided 14 minutes and 56 seconds to breaking down the race between Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. A scant 31 seconds were given to the competitive Republican race.

Over the course of the two hour program, GMA featured four segments on the Democrats and only a solitary (and brief) piece on the GOP contest. This included co-host Diane Sawyer interviewing Barack Obama twice. ABC anchor and former Bill Clinton operative George Stephanopoulos talked to Senator Hillary Clinton. Kate Snow discussed the state of the New York senator's White House bid. Aside from mentioning the latest GOP polls in the show's intro, the only analysis of the Republicans resulted from Sawyer asking Stephanopoulos this banal question: "And what about the Republicans?" The conversation that followed lasted 31 seconds.

Clinton Braces for Second Loss;
Union, Senators May Back Obama

By JACKIE CALMES
January 8, 2008; Page A1

NASHUA, N.H. -- With Barack Obama strongly favored -- even within Hillary Clinton's camp -- to win a second straight victory in today's New Hampshire Democratic primary, both rivals are looking to the next battle grounds. But his momentum threatens to swamp her in the next two states as well and shows signs of fracturing her support in the party establishment.

Already some Clinton associates have begun lobbying for her early exit if she loses the primary by a big margin, as polls suggest she could. Several Senate colleagues who have sat on the fence are now in talks with Obama advisers about endorsing the freshman Illinois senator over his more experienced colleague.

Despite raising more than $100 million, Sen. Clinton also faces financial worries as contributions have begun to slacken. But she vows to fight on: Her campaign will pivot to focus more heavily on "Super Tuesday" Feb. 5, when 21 states vote. "We are going all the way to the convention," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said.

Joe Klein, who I worked w/ way back when @ the VILLAGE VOICE is also reporting that Obama is in touch w/ Kenya attempting to come up w/ some diplomatic solution, and has the blessings of Condi Rice.Condi's also had him do a Voice Of America commercial, so let's just say he's quick to learn (Mrs. Clinton) & a multi-tasker as he moves quicker than the road runner to all of these packed out campaign rallies.

Clinton’s Civil Rights Lesson

By Sarah Wheaton

DOVER, N.H. — As they barnstorm through New Hampshire, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband are often introduced by supporters who once backed another candidate but converted to her cause.

Today, in Dover, Francine Torge, a former John Edwards supporter, said this while introducing Mrs. Clinton: “Some people compare one of the other candidates to John F. Kennedy. But he was assassinated. And Lyndon Baines Johnson was the one who actually” passed the civil rights legislation.

The comment, an apparent reference to Senator Barack Obama, is particularly striking given documented fears among blacks that Mr. Obama will be assassinated if elected.

Study: 9/11 stress linked to heart trouble

By Marilyn Elias, USA TODAY
Those who felt terribly stressed after the Sept. 11 attacks and continue to worry about terrorism are developing cardiac problems at much higher rates than other Americans, suggests a groundbreaking study out Monday.

It's the first large report to track the health of adults from before 9/11 to see how their responses to the terrorist attack may be contributing to illness years later.

"You don't have to be directly exposed to attacks or have pre-existing health problems to see some bad effects. It's how you react to the terrorism that counts," says Roxane Cohen Silver, a psychologist at the University of California-Irvine.

Weigel's book is entitled Faith, Reason, and The War Against Jihadism: A Call to Action. The book was born of a desire to help his fellow citizens in this election year, he says, and to help them to fully understand the threat of jihadist terrorism. The future of the human race cannot be the burden of one political party, argues Weigel. He believes the next president will have no choice but to confront this Islamic threat.

"I hope he or she understands that this kind of multi-generational contest can only be contested by America together," he says.

Speculation over Bloomberg candidacy grows

By Christopher Grimes in New York

Michael Bloomberg, who is expected to decide sometime in the next eight weeks whether to launch an independent bid for the US presidency, is on Monday meeting leading members of both main political parties who have expressed deep frustration with the state of the campaign.

Organisers of the forum, to take place on Oklahoma, say it is not meant to be a launching pad for a bid by Mr Bloomberg, New York’s mayor. But it will keep him in the national discussion ahead of Tuesday’s primaries in New Hampshire, while also giving him the chance to woo distinguished members of both parties who could add muscle to a bid if he chooses to run.

The event’s planners – David Boren, a former Democratic senator from Oklahoma, and Sam Nunn, the former Democratic senator from Georgia – have raised the possibility of supporting a third-party bid.

U.S. and Iraqi forces launched a major operation to strike against al-Qaeda in Iraq and other extremists, the U.S. military said Tuesday, in an effort to build on a recent overall reduction of violence and push militants from their strongholds.

The division and brigade-level operation, dubbed Phantom Phoenix, will cover the entire country, the military said. "Phantom Phoenix will synchronize lethal and non-lethal effects to exploit recent security gains and disrupt terrorist support zones and enemy command and control," the military said in a statement.

The Clown & The Background Is Coming Out Of The Box!

quote:

Ron Paul Bigotry Revolution
by Daniel Koffler

James Kirchick of the New Republic has a devastating piece on Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) online today on the TNR website. Kirchick provides a meticulously detailed history of the “Ron Paul Political Report,” a newsletter Paul had circulated to a network of some 7,000 subscribers from the late 80s and early 90s.

As Kirchick reports—whether describing post-apartheid South Africa as a “destruction of civilization,” alleging that Martin Luther King “seduced underage girls and boys,” warning of “tens of thousands of well-placed friends of Israel in all countries who are willing to wok [sic] for the Mossad in their area of expertise,” or urging white readers to arm themselves after “the first skirmish in the race war of the 1990s,”—virtually every historic trope of racism, anti-Semitism, anti-gay bigotry, or conspiracy theorizing featured in the “Ron Paul Political Report” in one way or another. For his part, Paul has alternately acknowledged writing some of the material that went out under his name, only to deny authorship when confronted with the most disturbing details. In any case, Paul has taken “moral responsibility” for the contents of the “Ron Paul Political Report.” What follows is a quick digest of some of his greatest, which is to say most disgraceful, hits.

I might add, on a personal note, that as a libertarian with significant sympathy for Paul’s platform, I initially viewed claims of his past history of racism skeptically. But the evidence is so overwhelming that the defense of Paul is now, itself, indefensible.

~~A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE~~~...Link Here

quote:

Angry White Man by James Kirchick
The bigoted past of Ron Paul.
Post Date Tuesday, January 08, 2008

If you are a critic of the Bush administration, chances are that, at some point over the past six months, Ron Paul has said something that appealed to you. Paul describes himself as a libertarian, but, since his presidential campaign took off earlier this year, the Republican congressman has attracted donations and plaudits from across the ideological spectrum. Antiwar conservatives, disaffected centrists, even young liberal activists have all flocked to Paul, hailing him as a throwback to an earlier age, when politicians were less mealy-mouthed and American government was more modest in its ambitions, both at home and abroad. In The New York Times Magazine, conservative writer Christopher Caldwell gushed that Paul is a "formidable stander on constitutional principle," while The Nation praised "his full-throated rejection of the imperial project in Iraq." Former TNR editor Andrew Sullivan endorsed Paul for the GOP nomination, and ABC's Jack Tapper described the candidate as "the one true straight-talker in this race." Even The Wall Street Journal, the newspaper of the elite bankers whom Paul detests, recently advised other Republican presidential contenders not to "dismiss the passion he's tapped."

Most voters had never heard of Paul before he launched his quixotic bid for the Republican nomination. But the Texan has been active in politics for decades. And long before he was the darling of antiwar activists on the left and right, Paul was in the newsletter business. In the age before blogs, newsletters occupied a prominent place in right-wing political discourse. With the pages of mainstream political magazines typically off-limits to their views (National Review editor William F. Buckley having famously denounced the John Birch Society), hardline conservatives resorted to putting out their own, less glossy publications. These were often paranoid and rambling--dominated by talk of international banking conspiracies, the Trilateral Commission's plans for world government, and warnings about coming Armageddon--but some of them had wide and devoted audiences. And a few of the most prominent bore the name of Ron Paul.

Paul's newsletters have carried different titles over the years--Ron Paul's Freedom Report, Ron Paul Political Report, The Ron Paul Survival Report--but they generally seem to have been published on a monthly basis since at least 1978. (Paul, an OB-GYN and former U.S. Army surgeon, was first elected to Congress in 1976.) During some periods, the newsletters were published by the Foundation for Rational Economics and Education, a non-profit Paul founded in 1976; at other times, they were published by Ron Paul & Associates, a now-defunct entity in which Paul owned a minority stake, according to his campaign spokesman. The Freedom Report claimed to have over 100,000 readers in 1984. At one point, Ron Paul & Associates also put out a monthly publication called The Ron Paul Investment Letter.

Obama's Abortion Stance Hurts Blacks, Say Pro-Life Experts
By Penny Starr

January 08, 2008

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) may be riding what seems a perfect wave toward the Democratic presidential nomination, but some African-Americans say his pro-abortion stance make him a danger to the black community.

"Between 1882 and 1962, 3,446 blacks were lynched," says Rev. Clenard H. Childress Jr. on his Web site, www.blackgenocide.org. "That number is surpassed in less than three days by abortion."

More than 1,400 African-American children are aborted each day in the United States, said Childress.

Clinton, McCain Win in New Hampshire

Jan 8 10:40 PM US/Eastern
By DAVID ESPO and PHILIP ELLIOTT
Associated Press Writers

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton won New Hampshire's Democratic primary Tuesday night in a startling upset, defeating Sen. Barack Obama and resurrecting her bid for the White House. Sen. John McCain powered past his Republican rivals and back into contention for the GOP nomination.

Clinton's victory capped a comeback from last week's third-place finish in the Iowa caucuses and raised the possibility of a long battle for the party nomination between the most viable black candidate in history and the former first lady, who is seeking to become the first woman to occupy the Oval Office.

McCain's triumph scrambled the Republican race as well.

On the Republican side, John McCain has won the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary, beating out rival Mitt Romney by a comfortable margin.

With 40 percent of precincts reporting on the Republican side, returns showed the Arizona senator with 38 percent of the vote and Romney with 30 percent.

New Hampshire's Polling Fiasco
January 09, 2008 12:05 AM

There will be a serious, critical look at the final pre-election polls in the Democratic presidential primary in New Hampshire; that is essential. It is simply unprecedented for so many polls to have been so wrong. We need to know why.

But we need to know it through careful, empirically based analysis. There will be a lot of claims about what happened - about respondents who reputedly lied, about alleged difficulties polling in biracial contests. That may be so. It also may be a smokescreen - a convenient foil for pollsters who'd rather fault their respondents than own up to other possibilities - such as their own failings in sampling and likely voter modeling.

There have been previous races that misstated support for black candidates in biracial races. But most of those were long ago, and there have been plenty of polls in biracial races that were accurate. (For more on past problems with polls in biracial races, see this blog I wrote for Freakonomics last May.) And there was no overstatement of Obama in Iowa polls.

Voter turnout in NH sets record

CONCORD, N.H. - Voters excited about competitive races in both parties set a record for turnout in New Hampshire's primary Tuesday.

With ballots from 12 percent of voting precincts still to be counted, about 453,000 residents had cast votes, breaking the previous primary turnout record of 396,385 ballots cast in 2000.

State officials predicted that when all ballots were counted, the total would surpass 500,000.

While some election commentators are looking carefully at the level of devotion Sen. Barack Obama has to Islam, it is the strong African-centered and race-based philosophy of the senator's United Church of Christ that has some bloggers crying foul.

Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago is where Obama was baptized as a Christian two decades ago, even borrowing the title for one of his books, "The Audacity of Hope," from a sermon by his senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.

The first paragraph of the "About Us" section of the church's website mentions the word "black" or "Africa" five times:

Barack Obama is the most pro-abortion presidential candidate ever.

He is so pro-abortion that he refused as an Illinois state senator to support legislation to protect babies who survived late-term abortions because he did not want to concede -- as he explained in a cold-blooded speech on the Illinois Senate floor -- that these babies, fully outside their mothers' wombs, with their hearts beating and lungs heaving, were in fact "persons."

"Persons," of course, are guaranteed equal protection of the law under the 14th Amendment.

What Happened to Polls In New Hampshire?

Wednesday, January 09, 2008

Hillary Clinton’s victory in New Hampshire was a shock to anyone who followed the pre-election polls. At Rasmussen Reports, our final numbers suggested a 7-point victory for Barack Obama. In the end, Clinton won by three. Other polls also foreshadowed a solid victory for Obama, some projecting a double digit margin. The campaigns themselves expected a significant victory for Obama (the Clinton campaign was even saying that anything less than a double-digit loss would be a victory of sorts for their candidate).

It is hard to remember a time when the polling and expectations were so universally different from what really happened. At the same time, It is worth remembering that polling was generally on target for the Republican race. John McCain won, as expected, by splitting the Republican vote with Romney and winning big among Independents. Independents accounted for 37% of the Republican Primary voters, a bit higher than projected.

So what happened with the polling on the Democratic race? There are several possibilities.

~~~LINK~~~
One consideration is a race factor it happened w/ Bradley, Dinkins & in other states-where non minority pollees tell the pollster that they're voting for the person of color but doesn't.This might have been 1 of the factors-you all saw the polls some gave Obama double digit leads...and you saw it on the Clinton's faces & their staff.Nobody's going to believe polls for awhile.
Former Dem Nominee Kerry Endorses Obama
Jan 10, 4:19 PM (ET)
By NEDRA PICKLER and ANDREW MIGA
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, gave Barack Obama a timely endorsement Thursday, snubbing Hillary Rodham Clinton as well as his own vice presidential running mate.
Kerry came to South Carolina to embrace Obama, two weeks before the state's primary and with Obama needing a boost after Clinton's emotional victory over him in New Hampshire.
Quoting a black American hero in endorsing the man who hopes to be the first black president, Kerry told a cheering crowd, "Martin Luther King said that the time is always right to do what is right." Now is the time, Kerry said, to declare "that Barack Obama can be, will be and should be the next president of the United States."
Bauer: Bloomberg could have major effect on election if he runs as independent
Chad Groening OneNewsNow.com
January 10, 2008
Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer believes New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg could have a major effect on the 2008 presidential election as a potential third-party candidate.
Hear this Report
The New York Times reports that Bloomberg is growing increasingly fond with the idea of an independent presidential bid as aides are aggressively laying the groundwork. Bloomberg -- once a Democrat, then a Republican, and now an independent -- has denied any interest in running for the presidency, but keeps speculation alive that he might.
Bauer, who now runs the conservative group American Values, is intrigued at the concept of a Bloomberg run. "I believe he would hurt Hillary Clinton or any of the likely Democratic nominees," says Bauer, "because ... even though he ran for mayor as a Republican, he is extremely liberal on all the social issues and values issues and on a good bit of economic policy."
Hillary Rodham Gore
New York Sun Editorial
January 10, 2008
On the night of her primary victory, Senator Clinton credited the people of New Hampshire with helping her find her own voice. To judge by the rest of her remarks, it is the voice of an angry, divisive class-warrior, more like Senator Edwards than Senator Obama. "The oil companies, the drug companies, the health insurance companies, the predatory student loan companies have had seven years of a president who stands up for them. It's time we had a president who stands up for all of you," Mrs. Edwa… sorry, Clinton told her audience. She said she would deliver on the promise that "the government will be of the people, by the people and for the people, not just the privileged few."
It was an echo of Vice President Gore's Robert Shrum-influenced disaster of a 2000 Democratic convention speech in Los Angeles, in which the Democratic Party's candidate for president vowed to take on, "Big tobacco, big oil, the big polluters, the pharmaceutical companies, the HMOs," and said the president "is charged with the responsibility of fighting for all the people, not just the people of one state or one district, not just the wealthy or the powerful, all the people; especially those who need a voice, those who need a champion, those who need to be lifted up, so they are never left behind."
The upside is that Mrs. Clinton is raising money from the very industries she is bashing, making her sincerity open to question. The Center for Responsive Politics reports that Mrs. Clinton has raised $269,436 from the pharmaceutical industry, more than any other candidate, including Republicans, and $220,550 from the oil and gas industry, more than double what her closest Democratic rivals raised from the industry.
The Dark Side of Illegal Immigration: Nearly One Million Sex Crimes Committed by Illegal Immigrants in the United States
Deborah Schurman-Kauflin, Ph.D.
Introduction:
After conducting a 12-month in-depth study of illegal immigrants who committed sex crimes and murders for the time period of January 1999 through April 2006, it is clear that the U.S. public faces a dangerous threat from sex predators who cross the U.S. borders illegally.
There were 1,500 cases analyzed in depth. They included: serial rapes, serial murders, sexual homicides, and child molestation committed by illegal immigrants. Police reports, public records, interviews with police, and media accounts were all included. Offenders were located in 36 states, but it is clear that the most of the offenders were located in states with the highest numbers of illegal immigrants. California was number one, followed by Texas, Arizona, New Jersey, New York, and Florida.
Based on population numbers of 12,000,000 illegal immigrants and the fact that young males make up more of this population than the general U.S. population, sex offenders in the illegal immigrant group make up a higher percentage. When examining ICE reports and public records, it is consistent to find sex offenders comprising 2 percent of illegals apprehended. Based on this 2 percent figure, which is conservative, there are approximately 240,000 illegal immigrant sex offenders in the United States.
With Resources Spread Thin, GOP Candidates Pause for FOX News Debate in South Carolina
Michigan comes next on the primary calendar, but Republican presidential candidates are weighing their strategies for South Carolina as they briefly detour there on Thursday to take their seats at a FOX News debate in Myrtle Beach.
The debate comes as a couple of the GOP candidates — Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani — have essentially given up on the Palmetto State and instead are trying for strategic advantage elsewhere. Conversely, Fred Thompson is staking his entire race on a bravura performance in South Carolina.
The face-off, leading to the first-in-the-South primary on Jan. 19, will give the six candidates the chance to set themselves apart and reach out to South Carolina voters at a time when resources are spread thin across the country and no real front-runner has emerged.
New security rules for driver's licenses
By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer 9 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Americans born after Dec. 1, 1964, will have to get more secure driver's licenses in the next six years under ambitious post-9/11 security rules to be unveiled Friday by federal officials.
The Homeland Security Department has spent years crafting the final regulations for the REAL ID Act, a law designed to make it harder for terrorists, illegal immigrants and con artists to get government-issued identification. The effort once envisioned to take effect in 2008 has been pushed back in the hopes of winning over skeptical state officials.
Vaccine Vindication: Thimerosal Not Linked With Autism
Thursday, January 10, 2008
By Steven Milloy
The vaccine preservative Thimerosal is not linked with autism, a new study reports.
The data also suggest that the dilettante “scientist” Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. should perhaps go back to practicing law and stop exploiting parental fear and suffering for his own political agenda.
Despite an absence of intriguing, let alone compelling, evidence that mercury-containing Thimerosal was associated with autism, vaccine makers voluntarily began removing Thimerosal from their products in 1999 — providing a perfect opportunity to study whether the removal (and, therefore, Thimerosal) had any effect on autism rates.
FBI wiretap cut off for unpaid bill
By Randall Mikkelsen Thu Jan 10, 2:47 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A telephone company cut off an FBI international wiretap after the agency failed to pay its bill on time, according to a U.S. government audit released on Thursday.
The Justice Department's inspector general faulted the FBI for poor handling of money used in undercover investigations, which it said made the agency vulnerable to theft and mishandled invoices.
It cited the case in which a wiretap under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which governs electronic spying in terrorism and intelligence cases, was disrupted due to an overdue bill.
Recession, Foreign Policy Dominate GOP Debate in South Carolina
Stopping the housing crisis, cutting taxes for the middle class, becoming energy independent and investing in research and development are the methods Mitt Romney would use to stop the U.S. from sliding into a recession.
Those were the suggestions the former Massachusetts governor gave Thursday night at the FOX News Republican presidential primary debate in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
“Recessions hurt working families and people across the countries,” Romney said. “It’s time for us not just to talk about improving the economy, we have to do the hard work of rebuilding our economy and strengthening it.”
This was the best GOP debate to date w/ Thompson finally waking up & stating clearer positions, Rino Romney also seemed very in command tonight; the joke of the night was Ron Paul who wasn't even on point & you could hear the laughter..it was an Admiral Stockdale moment-where am I--and why am I here
The Frank Luntz group afterwards had high almost unanimous agreement that Thompson won & Paul the biggest looser.
Of course look for the Paul internet army from Nigeria & parts unknown to be sending messages to Fox like crazy...Paul was again VERY scary.
Thursday, January 10, 2008 8:49 AM
Sen. John Kerry’s endorsement of Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination should come as no surprise to readers of Newsmax’s Insider Report, which has disclosed Kerry’s membership in the so-called “Gang of Four” Hillary Clinton haters.
The Four — Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean, and Al Gore — have pledged to stop Hillary from getting the nomination, and each has his own reason for detesting Clinton.
As the Insider Report has disclosed on several occasions beginning in 2005, Kennedy is disgusted by Bill and Hillary Clinton’s moderate politics, and he early on endorsed Kerry for the 2008 nomination.
Obama surge means trouble for Jesse and Al
Posted: January 10, 2008
1:00 a.m. Eastern
Black South Carolina state Sen. Robert Ford (a Democrat), back in February 2007, warned against a 2008 Democratic ticket headed by Sen. Barack Obama. Ford said, "It's a slim possibility for (Obama) to get the nomination, but then everybody else is doomed. Every Democrat running on that ticket next year would lose because he's black, and he's top of the ticket. We'd lose the House and the Senate and the governors and everything. I'm a gambling man. I love Obama. But I'm not going to kill myself."
Jesse Jackson, too, criticized Obama, during the so-called Jena Six matter. Authorities in Louisiana charged five of six black youths with attempted murder for beating a white teenager unconscious. Jackson felt Barack Obama insufficiently critical, and said Obama "needs to stop acting like he's white."
Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson's soul mate, also sounded alarms against Obama, saying, "Just because you're our color doesn't make you our kind."
Sharpton also asked, "Why shouldn't the black community ask questions? Are we now being told, 'You all just shut up'?" after a published report that he was jealous of Obama's campaign – an accusation which, according to Sharpton, came from the Obama camp. Some thought Sharpton jealous of Obama, but Sharpton called such an assertion a ruse, an effort to get an early endorsement from him. "I'm not going to be cajoled or intimidated by any candidate," Sharpton said, "not for my support." A New York Observer editorial said, "The petulant Mr. Sharpton is telling people that Mr. Obama is 'a candidate driven by white leadership.'" Sharpton threw his support to Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.
AP Military Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - Iraq's western province of Anbar, hotbed of the Sunni Arab insurgency for the first four years of the war, will be returned to Iraqi control in March, a senior U.S. general said Thursday.
In a telephone interview from Iraq, Marine Maj. Gen. Walter E. Gaskin, commander of the roughly 35,000 Marine and Army forces in Anbar, said levels of violence have dropped so significantly—coupled with the growth and development of Iraqi security forces in the province—that Anbar is ready to be handed back to the Iraqis.
Thus far, nine of 18 Iraqi provinces have reverted to Iraqi control, most recently the southern province of Basra in December. The process has gone substantially slower than the Bush administration once hoped, mainly because of obstacles to developing sufficient Iraqi police and army forces. But Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday that he expects the process to continue.
Immigration: A Modest Proposal
By Richard Baehr
No issue seems to excite the GOP base more than immigration and the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants already here. Politically correct Democrats maintain there are no illegals, only undocumented workers. Democrats, for all practical purposes, do not want to talk about immigration, and would prefer that Republicans splinter over the issue and drive away Hispanic voters in the process.
But Democrats have their own discord on the issue, since two of the Party's major constituencies, African Americans, and Hispanics, have different views on the subject, and on the impact of high levels of immigration (legal or illegal) on wage rates, and job prospects for members of these groups.
Vogue Magazine Attempts to Bring Partial Birth Abortion into Vogue
By Hilary White
NEW YORK, January 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Cleverly marketing legal abortion as a boon to women's emancipation has been the most important task of the abortion industry and lobby for thirty years. In this month's edition, the gruesome procedure of partial birth abortion has been given a style makeover by the world's most influential fashion magazine, Vogue.
The magazine offers the article's description: "When Lori Campbell's second pregnancy developed complications, she was faced with a painful decision. But she was thankful it was hers to make." What follows is a paean to legalized late-term abortion and a series of long complaints about the efforts of pro-life Americans to make it illegal.
In the article, "Private Lives," that appears in the January 2008 issue of the US edition of Vogue, Lori Campbell describes her decision in 1998 to have a late term abortion by the method usually referred to as "partial birth." In partial birth abortion the child is extracted from the mother's womb, until only the head remains in the birth canal; he is then killed by suctioning out the brains and collapsing the skull. This type of abortion is called "intact dilation and extraction" by the medical community, and was banned in the US in 2003. In 2007, a US Supreme Court decision upheld the constitutionality of the ban.
The study, which The Lancet, a British medical journal, published three weeks before the midterm elections, made major headlines around the world with claims that some 650,000 Iraqis died in the war to overthrow Saddam Hussein and the ensuing chaos.
A series of comments from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, her husband and her supporters are spurring a racial backlash and adding a divisive edge to the presidential primary as the candidates head south to heavily African-American South Carolina.
The comments, which ranged from the New York senator appearing to diminish the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement — an aide later said she misspoke — to Bill Clinton dismissing Sen. Barack Obama’s image in the media as a “fairy tale” — generated outrage on black radio, black blogs and cable television. And now they've drawn the attention of prominent African-American politicians.
WASHINGTON — U.S. residents born after Dec. 1, 1964, will need to have new Homeland Security-approved drivers licenses by Dec. 1, 2014, if they want to use their ID to board an airplane or enter a federal building, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Friday.
Older drivers will have until 2017, he said.
The new rules do not require states to issue the new identification cards, but residents of states that do not participate will not be able to use their driver's licenses as proof of identity at federal agencies.
Were Saints Mentally Ill?***TGIF NEWS***
By Father Jonathan Morris
Yesterday on ABC morning talk show The View co-host and professional comedian Joy Behar decided not to be her usual funny self. Instead, she tried to get into trouble by making outrageous statements about a serious topic. She succeeded — she wasn’t funny and she’s in trouble, at least with those of us who care about preserving the revered profession of comedians, worldwide.
In an obviously scripted moment, Joy Behar feigned spontaneity: “I’m going to get in trouble for this, but you know what? I have a theory that you can’t find any saints anymore because of psycho-tropic medication. I think that in the old days the saints were hearing voices and they didn’t have any Thorazine to calm them down. Now that we have all of this medication available to us, you can’t find a saint any more.”
Honestly, the monologue is kind of funny. Had I been in the audience and not known what was coming next, I may have chuckled. We expect comedians to exaggerate, poke fun, and take things completely out of context. When a professional funny man talks about serious issues in a comedic way, a person with a sense of humor knows not to take him seriously. It’s precisely the internal contradiction and irony of the moment that makes a joke funny.
Public Radio Broadcast 'Deep Fried Christ' Skit+++NEW+++
January 11, 2008
(CNSNews.com) - Some of the people who tuned into public radio station KCPW in St. Lake City, Utah, recently weren't laughing at the satire poking fun at a Mike Huckabee "family recipe." More than a few of them, in fact, were outraged by the "Huck and the Eucharist" skit, which aired Jan. 7 on the "Fair Game with Faith Salie" program.
The transcript, in part, said: "Try this Huckabee family favorite. Deep-Fried Body of Christ - boring holy wafers no more. Take one Eucharist. Preferably post transubstantiation. Deep-fry in fat, not vegetable oil, ladies, until crispy. Serve piping hot."
Many sent e-mails to Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. "At that point, we decided to issue a press release to 500 media outlets around the country," Donohue told Cybercast News Service.
Small Crowd Greets Romney's Mich. Push
Jan 11, 2:56 PM (ET)
WARREN, Mich. (AP) - Despite embracing Michigan as the heart of his bid to revive his campaign, Republican Mitt Romney was greeted by an anemic crowd Friday as he began his final push for votes in the crucial primary.
No more than 150 people were on hand for his appearance at Macomb Community College's Center for Alternative Fuels, in a space set up for an audience twice that size. Romney delivered an unusually short, 13-minute address, breaking with recent practice and taking no questions from his audience.
In his remarks, he tugged incessantly at a variety of heart strings as he pleaded for support in his effort to rebound from second-place finishes in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary - both of which he worked hard to win.
OK, Ron Paul, You Say You're Not a Racist, Prove It
Posted January 11, 2008 | 10:10 AM (EST)
Ron Paul and his backers can sail through the ceiling, scream foul until their lungs burst, and say that it's all a big conspiracy by mainstream media hit artists, a Paul hating and fearful political establishment, and on the make Republican and Democrats to smear and slander their hero as a racist. But the one that has done more to fan charges that Paul is a closet bigot is Paul himself in writings and sentiments that express racist views that purportedly carried Paul's stamp on them.
Paul is, of course, outraged every time those embarrassing newsletters written in the 1990s with racially front loaded inflammatory quips about and bash of blacks, and now as it turns out gays, keep publicly cropping up. They cropped up again recently on CNN. The Paul-attributed digs and insults call blacks chronic welfare grifters, thugs, lousy parents, say they are inherently racist toward whites, and supposedly admonished whites to get their guns because the animals are coming. Paul vehemently denies that he said any of those things.
But there's a colossal problem with his denial. The quips appeared in his officially approved newsletters. There is no evidence that he wrote a correction, issued a clarification, or if, as some Paul groupies claim, they were written by someone else, that he publicly disavowed and fired that someone else. Since Paul did none of those things it begs the question whether those views truly represent his feelings or not. He didn't disown them at the time. He loudly protests them now because he has to. He has revved up a motley group of disaffected, disgruntled, naïve, wet-behind-the-ear teenie boppers, and political malcontents who crave for someone, anyone, to snub their nose at the political establishment. But their mix of blind adulation and desperation translates out into more media and public scrutiny than Paul has ever gotten. And that in turn has meant that his past, or alleged past words, are now wide open for public dissection and accountability. That riles up Paul backers who go nuts over any hint that he is anything less than the second coming of St. Paul and Mother Theresa.
Associated Press Writer
BOSTON (AP) - Three former leaders of an Islamic charity were convicted Friday of duping the U.S. government into awarding their organization tax-exempt status by hiding the group's pro-jihad activities.
Care International Inc., which is now defunct, described its mission as helping war orphans, widows and refugees in Muslim nations. But prosecutors said the organization also distributed a newsletter promoting jihad and supported Muslim militants involved in armed conflicts around the world.
Emadeddin Muntasser, the founder of Care International; Muhammed Mubayyid, the group's former treasurer; and Samir Al-Monla, the president of Care from 1996 to 1998, were charged with tax code violations, making false statements and conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Judicial Watch Announces List of Washington’s “Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians” for 2007
Washington, DC –Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released its 2007 list of Washington’s “Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians.” The list, in alphabetical order, includes:
1. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY): In addition to her long and sordid ethics record, Senator Hillary Clinton took a lot of heat in 2007 – and rightly so – for blocking the release her official White House records. Many suspect these records contain a treasure trove of information related to her role in a number of serious Clinton-era scandals. Moreover, in March 2007, Judicial Watch filed an ethics complaint against Senator Clinton for filing false financial disclosure forms with the U.S. Senate (again). And Hillary’s top campaign contributor, Norman Hsu, was exposed as a felon and a fugitive from justice in 2007. Hsu pleaded guilt to one count of grand theft for defrauding investors as part of a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme.
2. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI): Conyers reportedly repeatedly violated the law and House ethics rules, forcing his staff to serve as his personal servants, babysitters, valets and campaign workers while on the government payroll. While the House Ethics Committee investigated these allegations in 2006, and substantiated a number of the accusations against Conyers, the committee blamed the staff and required additional administrative record-keeping and employee training. Judicial Watch obtained documentation in 2007 from a former Conyers staffer that sheds new light on the activities and conduct on the part of the Michigan congressman, which appear to be at a minimum inappropriate and likely unlawful. Judicial Watch called on the Attorney General in 2007 to investigate the matter.
The Surge Effect
The gamble is paying off for Bush and McCain.
by Fred Barnes
01/21/2008, Volume 013, Issue 18
The match is almost perfect. As the surge in Iraq has succeeded, the presidential campaign of John McCain has risen from the ashes. This is no coincidence, and the message is simple and unmistakable. The surge is now a powerful force in American politics. In the jargon of the 2008 presidential race, it's a game-changer.
The surge effect is the result of gains in Iraq well beyond the most optimistic dreams of the surge's advocates. The American military, led by General David Petraeus, has under-promised and over-delivered. Violence has dropped precipitously. So have attacks on Americans and combat deaths. Baghdad has been virtually secured, al Qaeda crushed, and sectarian bloodshed significantly reduced. Provinces once controlled by insurgents are scheduled to be turned over to well-trained Iraqi forces, starting with Anbar in the spring. The war, in short, is being won.
The media now say that Iraq is a secondary issue. But the voters, so far mostly on the Republican side, disagree. In New Hampshire last week, two-thirds of Republicans who voted in the primary told exit pollsters they support the war in Iraq. Oddly enough, they like the war more than they like President Bush.
Perspectives: Study suggests gays can change -- but truth faces tough opposition
Ed Vitagliano - Guest Columnist OneNewsNow.com
A new study concerning the possibility of homosexuals leaving that lifestyle is roiling the waters of debate, challenging the dogma of mental health organizations who insist that homosexuality is immutable.
Organizations like the influential American Psychiatric Association have steadfastly refused to admit the possibility that attempts to change sexual orientation through religious and/or psychological methods can work.
In 1999, for example, then-APA President Rodrigo Muñoz, M.D., said: "There is no scientific evidence that reparative or conversion therapy is effective in changing a person's sexual orientation." He added that "there is, however, evidence that this type of therapy can be destructive."
A new study, however, claims to prove just the opposite. Conducted by psychology professors Stanton L. Jones of Wheaton College and Mark A. Yarhouse of Regent University, the study, Ex-Gays? A Longitudinal Study of Religiously Mediated Change in Sexual Orientation, was published in book form and scheduled for an October release.
A better way to choose a college
By Richard M. Freeland Thu Jan 10, 3:00 AM ET
Worcester, Mass. - This is a time of year when high school students and their families are thinking hard about college. As seniors, juniors, and parents identify their top choices, discussions typically focus on the college itself. Is the institution small or large? How strong are the academics? What is the social life like? Do I like the campus?
Such considerations are important, but they can obscure the all-important question: Where will these college years lead?
Applicants should think seriously about which college on their list can best prepare them for the real world. They should look for campuses that offer well-structured programs to help them form a direction for their lives and develop the capacity to take steps along that path.
MAN TO BEAT ***NEW***
MCCAIN'S CROSS-PARTY APPEAL
By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN
January 12, 2008 -- John McCain is starting to look like the candi date to beat for the GOP nomination. Not long ago, he was dismissed, unable to compete with Rudy Giuliani's star power. But with New Hampshire, the tortoise has overtaken the hare.
If McCain wins Michigan on Tuesday (as he did in 2000), Rudy may find himself so far behind before he starts to run that he can never catch up.
McCain could even beat Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. His record taps into a latent populism that attracts Republicans, Democrats and Independents. His battle against big tobacco, efforts to address global warming, opposition to torture during interrogations and fight to reform corporate governance and to protect investors and pensioners appeal to voters of all stripes.
An off-the-cuff comment Hillary Clinton made in Las Vegas on Thursday has ignited a national firestorm.
Answering a shout from a man in the crowd who said, "I'm married to an illegal woman," Clinton shot back, "No woman is illegal," grinning as the packed Mexican restaurant at which she was speaking exploded in cheers.
That comment, reported in Friday's Review-Journal, caught the attention of the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Lou Dobbs and the Drudge Report and led to nearly 1,000 angry comments on the newspaper's Web site.
By Andrew Johnson
Published: 13 January 2008
One of Britain's leading Muslims has called on his community to rise up against a culture of fear and help stamp out forced marriages and honour killings after the third high-profile court case in Britain in the past year.
Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, head of the Muslim Parliament in Britain, spoke out after a coroner ruled on Friday that 17-year-old Shafilea Ahmed was "unlawfully killed" and that "the concept of an arranged marriage was central to the circumstances of her death".
Mr Siddiqui said he was certain the schoolgirl, who wanted to go to university and become a lawyer, was the victim of an honour killing. No charges have yet been bought by police, a failure Mr Siddiqui blamed on members of her family and close community closing ranks, even though some may have wanted to speak out.
Sarah-Kate Templeton, Health Editor
SCIENTISTS have created a beating heart in the laboratory in a breakthrough that could allow doctors one day to make a range of organs for transplant almost from scratch.
The procedure involved stripping all the existing cells from a dead heart so that only the protein “skeleton” that created its shape was left.
Then the skeleton was seeded with live “progenitor” cells, which multiplied and grew back over it, eventually linking together into a new organ. Such cells are involved in the formative stages of specialised types of tissue such as those found in the heart.
Illegal immigration akin to Enron fraud
Doug Mytty
Aspen, CO Colorado
January 13, 2008
Illegal Immigration: Republicans want cheap workers, Democrats want poor voters.
America once faced a problem with systematic fraud in the financial markets which lead to scandals such as Enron. The premise is simple, by misreporting their performance, these companies gained an illegal and unfair advantage over competitors. By misreporting their numbers, their cost of borrowing money was far lower, and they didn’t have to work to actually make a “profit.” Ultimately, society — that’s you — paid $50 billion when this fraud was uncovered.
Illegal immigrant employment is fraud by another name — and costs far more. Both the illegal immigrant, and the individuals employing them, attempt to gain an unfair advantage by creating an illegal advantage over competitors. Ultimately you pay, as more wealth is unfairly transferred to the illegal employer and more bills are given to you by the illegal immigrant. An extrapolation of the Rice University Huddle Study of 1996 to 2006 yields a net economic impact of minus $70 billion, nearly all of that borne by low-income households. Mexico alone receives nearly $20 Billion per year in remittances — that’s cash leaving the U.S. economy. For those who question the net impact of illegal’s work — after all they are working — one might also ask whether Enron was a net positive, for was it not also working? The reality is that white collar fraud and illegal employment are not victimless crimes, and also further affect business and employment by creating illegal competition.
Who Hates America?
by Gary Bauer
“If Barack Obama is elected president, I daresay America will present a new face to the world, will restore, simply by his election, hope – not just within the United States, but from all corners of the world, that America’s claim to moral authority is back on track and that our leadership in world affairs will see a renaissance.”
So said U.S. Representative William Delahunt (D-MA) at a recent campaign event in which the leading Democratic foreign policy voice endorsed for president a candidate who admits: “the strongest experience I have in foreign relations is the fact I spent four years overseas when I was a child in Southeast Asia." Well.
His gratuitousness aside, Delahunt’s statement echoed the conventional wisdom about the most urgent task awaiting the next president: to repair America’s sullied image abroad. But take a closer look at the evidence, and a different reality emerges.
Edwards Criticizes Clinton Comments
Jan 13 03:01 PM US/Eastern
By EVAN BERLAND
Associated Press Writer
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - Democrat John Edwards on Sunday waded into a dispute between his rivals, criticizing comments by Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband that some have considered disparaging to Barack Obama and black people generally.
"I must say I was troubled recently to see a suggestion that real change that came not through the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King but through a Washington politician. I fundamentally disagree with that," Edwards told more than 200 people gathered at a predominantly black Baptist church.
Sen. Hillary Clinton recently was quoted as saying King's dream of racial equality was realized only when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, while Bill Clinton said Obama was telling a "fairy tale" about his opposition to the Iraq war.
Protect U.S. citizens, not illegals
Dear Editor: On Nov. 11, my whole world was turned upside down, when my precious 20-year-old daughter was killed in a car accident. The other driver, an illegal immigrant with no license, was on the wrong side of McFarland Boulevard and hit her head-on. He had an alcohol level three times the legal limit. He was injured and has been charged with murder.
Every time I read the news lately, there are articles about public forums dealing with the rights that these illegal immigrants have to be “served and protected” by our already overworked police officers.
I am amazed that so much concern is given over their protection from crime, rather than the crime they have already committed being here illegally. Doesn’t that make them “fugitives”? Would the police department be expected to “serve and protect” a community of American citizens who have committed federal crimes and are on the run? They would be fugitives as well.
POLL: Transformed by Iowa and N.H., '08 Kicks Off as a Free-for-All
McCain and Obama Mix Things Up
Iowa and New Hampshire have transformed the 2008 presidential race into a free-for-all, vaulting John McCain past longtime frontrunner Rudy Giuliani in the Republican contest and fueling a strong challenge to Hillary Clinton by Barack Obama among Democrats.
McCain's victory in New Hampshire has sharply boosted views of his qualifications and abilities alike: His rating within his party as its most electable contender has tripled; as strongest leader, it's doubled; and he's scored double-digit gains in trust to handle Iraq and terrorism. He's climbed into the lead in overall vote preference for the first time in ABC News/Washington Post polls in the 2008 campaign.
Obama likewise is reaping benefits from winning the Iowa caucuses and coming within two points of Clinton in New Hampshire. He now challenges her as the most electable candidate. He's severely eroded her reputation as its strongest leader and sharply improved his trust to handle key issues. And in overall preference Clinton and Obama now are all but tied, 42-37 percent among likely voters, a dramatic tightening.
"That is the way to provide real leadership. That's what I've strived to do all my life," Giuliani said.
quote:
*** Harassment is a crime. If proven, depending on the severity and frequency of the conduct and the harasser's prior criminal record, harassment can be punishable as either a gross misdemeanor or a felony. Harassment can mean many things. It can refer to the actions of a person (or group) who is repeatedly sending you threatening letters, calling you on the phone, or repeatedly sending you unwanted gifts. It can also involve behavior such as following you, watching you, and coming to your place of work or home. This behavior is commonly referred to as "stalking". Harassment can also include intentionally exposing you to materials which the harasser knows, or has reason to know, are culturally offensive or intimidating to you.
It is not necessary that the harasser intend for the conduct to produce feelings of fear or intimidation in the victim, only that the harasser has reason to know that the conduct would cause such feelings. In some instances, harassment results from infatuation or romantic obsession. The harasser does not intend for the behavior to make the victim fearful; the harasser is trying to prove "love" for the victim. The law now reflects the understanding that, regardless of the motivation for the conduct, it disrupts the victim's life and may threaten the victim's safety.
Use of the phone to harrass or terrorize can be a federal offense--- I would think in this case applicable as it involves an election & the harrassers may be carrying out their dirty deeds across state lines.
NYT: Veterans Are Murderers on 'Downward Spiral'
Photo of Warner Todd Huston.
By Warner Todd Huston | January 14, 2008 - 10:34 ET
In a long report published on Sunday the New York Times appears to be trying to promulgate the idea that our returning military vets cannot successfully reintegrate back into their communities and into "normal lives" after returning from the stress of active duty overseas. The Times seems to be saying that our veterans have become murderers and are so mentally wracked that coming home is difficult for them. Their entire report is written as if the rate of murders committed by returning veterans is shockingly high. But, a look at real statistics proves that vets are less likely to become murderers than the general population. The Times does a great job smearing our veterans as nutjobs, but does not do such a great job giving a balanced view of the real statistics.
The New York Times found 121 cases in which veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan committed a killing in this country, or were charged with one, after their return from war. In many of those cases, combat trauma and the stress of deployment -- along with alcohol abuse, family discord and other attendant problems -- appear to have set the stage for a tragedy that was part destruction, part self-destruction.
IRVING, Tex. - After listening all week long to the trash talk coming out of Dallas, the Giants finally got their chance to hit the Cowboys in their big, fat mouths.
The Giants sent Tony Romo back to the beach with Jessica Simpson, ruined Terrell Owens' popcorn and stuffed Patrick Crayton's foot in his sizeable mouth when they stunned Dallas, 21-17, in the NFC divisional playoffs Sunday at Texas Stadium.
It was the Giants' NFL-record ninth straight road win and their first win in three tries against the Cowboys this season.
Clinton Receives Tepid Reception at MLK Event
By Patrick Healy
Speaking to black and Hispanic New Yorkers this afternoon, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton tried to quell the controversy over race and the Democratic presidential nomination fight by crediting the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King for his “march for freedom and justice” that had benefited both herself and her rival, Senator Barack Obama.
But Mrs. Clinton’s appearance and remarks, before the Local 32BJ union in midtown Manhattan, were not exactly a smash. The audience, made up mostly of security guards***, applauded steadily when she entered but did not roar – and there were a few scattered boos. Much of her speech was met with silence. Less than half of the room gave her a standing ovation when she left.
Barack Obama’s longtime minister, mentor, and sounding board has been a key supporter of Louis Farrakhan and last month honored the Nation of Islam leader for lifetime achievement.
Farrakhan has repeatedly made hate-filled statements targeting Jews, whites, America, and homosexuals. He has called whites “blue-eyed devils” and the “anti-Christ.” He has described Jews as “bloodsuckers” who control the government, the media, and some black organizations.
“Do you know some of these satanic Jews have taken over BET [the Black Entertainment Network]?” Farrakhan said in a speech on Nov. 11, 2007. “Everything that we built, they have. The mind of Satan now is running the record industry, movie industry, and television. And they make us look like we’re the murderers; we look like we’re the gangsters, but we’re punk stuff.”
Olbermann Accuses Joint Chiefs of Faking 'Gulf of Tonkin' with Iran
By Brad Wilmouth | January 15, 2008 - 00:11 ET
On Monday's Countdown show, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann used his regular "Worst Person in the World" segment to accuse the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Michael Mullen, of trying to "fake" a "Gulf of Tonkin" incident with Iran over the recent U.S. Navy confrontation with Iranian navy speed boats in the Strait of Hormuz. Referring to reports that, out of five Iranian boats, only one unarmed boat approached the U.S. Navy ships, and that the threatening message received could have come from a "well-known marine heckler" of the area, Olbermann awarded the "Worst Person" dishonor to Mullen: "So you guys tried to fake another Gulf of Tonkin incident using some clown with a CB radio and the lethal threat posed by the S.S. Minnow? Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen, on behalf of the Bush administration, today's 'Worst Person in the World'!"
Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the regular "Worst Person in the World" segment from the Monday January 14 Countdown show on MSNBC:
Obama camp slams Clintons over drugs talk
Barack Obama’s campaign has dismissed as not believable a prominent Hillary Rodham Clinton backer’s “tortured explanation” for seeming to inject Obama’s youthful drug use into the 2008 presidential campaign, and called it “troubling” that Clinton has not done more to distance herself from the remark.
Former President Bill Clinton was drawn into the controversy on Monday in appearances on black radio talk shows. He told one host, Roland Martin, that impolitic remarks by supporters sometimes “just happen” in politics and said, “I think it's important not to overreact to them.”
Obama has admitted in his memoir to using drugs as a young man, and Hillary Clinton has said personal attacks using that information are off-limits. Except they keep coming, in what are now at least three direct or indirect drug references from top Clinton surrogates in recent weeks.
It is the world wide web that has fueled the candidacy of Ron Paul from the beginning, gathering not only the rational libertarians, paleoconservatives, and anti-war Democrats to his cause but also the dark underbelly of humanity who apparently have so much time on their hands that they can harrass, threaten, and scare the living daylights out of a small town New Hampshire clerk who made an honest error on the primary voting sheet she sent to the Secretary of State in New Hampshire.
The unhinged nature of some Ron Paul supporters has been well documented. But someone should probably be arrested for this kind of behavior:
Three presidential rivals face off tonight in Las Vegas, but not Kucinich
LAS VEGAS - Democratic presidential rivals and their supporters vied for advantage in the courts, on a debate stage and at the ballot box on Tuesday in an unsettled race for the party's nomination to the White House.
The debate lineup included Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois as well as former Sen. John Edwards, but Tuesday evening the Nevada Supreme Court rejected an effort by Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich to join in, too.
The day's only primary, however, promised little or nothing of consequence, an election in Michigan that state party officials insisted on holding earlier in the campaign than the Democratic National Committee wanted.
“Tonight proves you can’t tell an American there’s something they just can’t do because Americans can do whatever they set their hearts on, and tonight is a victory of optimism over Washington-style pessimism,” Romney said from Southfield, Mich. “The lobbyists and the politicians realize that America now understands that Washington is broken and we’re going to do something about it.”
The petition effort was announced by two veteran political hands who say the current system in Washington is broken and needs a nonpartisan, pragmatic leader like Bloomberg.
Gerald Rafshoon, a former spokesman for President Jimmy Carter, and Doug Bailey, a longtime Republican consultant, are not the first to launch an online petition drive for the mayor, but their move comes at the height of primary campaign season. The two filed papers with the Federal Election Commission and the IRS to start the draft Bloomberg effort.
Obama's Farrakhan Test
By Richard Cohen
Barack Obama is a member of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Its minister, and Obama's spiritual adviser, is the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. In 1982, the church launched Trumpet Newsmagazine, with Wright's daughters now serving as publisher and executive editor. Every year, the magazine makes awards in various categories. Last year, it gave the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award to a man it said "truly epitomized greatness." That man is Louis Farrakhan.
Maybe for Wright and some others, Farrakhan "epitomized greatness." For most Americans, though, Farrakhan epitomizes racism, particularly in the form of anti-Semitism. Over the years, he has compiled an awesome record of offensive statements, even denigrating the Holocaust by falsely attributing it to Jewish cooperation with Hitler -- "They helped him get the Third Reich on the road." His history is a rancid stew of lies.
It's important to state right off that nothing in Obama's record suggests he harbors anti-Semitic views or agrees with Wright when it comes to Farrakhan. Instead, as Obama's top campaign aide, David Axelrod, points out, Obama often has said that he and his minister sometimes disagree. Farrakhan, Axelrod told me, is one of those instances.
Michigan, Louisiana and Pennsylvania "Most Pro-life States"
January 15, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Americans United for Life (AUL) today released its fifth annual ranking of the most and least pro-life states, based on laws in the states. For the third year in a row, Michigan topped the list, followed by Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Kansas.
"These states have made great strides in protecting women and their children from the negative consequences of abortion," said Denise M. Burke, AUL's Vice President & Legal Director.
While AUL's criteria covers each state's treatment of all life issues, the final ranking depends largely on each state's enactment of prudent and well-supported laws that fence in the abortion license granted by the U.S. Supreme Court in its 1973 decision, Roe v. Wade. Among the laws that AUL looks for are informed consent, parental involvement for minors, abortion clinic regulations, and funding limitations on the use of public monies for abortion.
Potentially troubling news for Clinton in Michigan 'win'
Posted: 11:00 PM ET
(CNN) — Hillary Clinton faced a grim statistic in Michigan tonight, despite her primary "win" there: results revealed that she may have reason to worry about her grasp on the African-American vote.
The Michigan primary vote was essentially meaningless: the national party stripped the state of its delegates because it held its contest too early in the election season, and Clinton was the only major Democratic contender whose name appeared on the ballot.
Even so, roughly 70 percent of Michigan’s African-American voters — a group that makes up a quarter of Michigan’s Democratic electorate — did not cast their votes for Clinton, choosing the “uncommitted” option instead. Yet these voters weren’t uncommitted at all: in fact, according to CNN exit polls, they overwhelmingly favored Barack Obama, whose name did not appear on the ballot.
DEBATE THOUGHTS
From NBC's Chuck Todd
This was a debate without fireworks as all three candidates seemed shellshocked from the last 72 hours and they came with the arms open. Interestingly, there were a few light jabs, but they were just that, light jabs.
Clinton dominated one section of the debate, the issue of Yucca and energy; She came armed on the issue and made sure that viewers knew the positions of both Edwards and Obama; They were the type of precise strikes that make me think we'll see these hits in paid mailers in the next, well, day since the Nevada caucuses are Saturday. Any thought that Clinton wasn't going to compete in Nevada was washed away with her debate performance.
On the perception front, I thought Edwards gave the best presentation; he may have been a little light on speaking time, but in this intimate forum, his skill of making every one of his answers personal to the viewer shined through very well.
More on Obama and Babies Born Alive ***NEW***
By Terence Jeffrey
Wednesday, January 16, 2008
Last week, I wrote that Barack Obama, as an Illinois state senator, opposed a bill to define as a "person" a fully born baby who survived an abortion. Obama opposed this bill, I wrote, even after an amendment was offered to it that mirrored language included in a virtually identical federal bill that won a 98 to zero vote in the U.S. Senate after Sen. Barbara Boxer said the language in question protected Roe v. Wade.
Obama, I reported, killed the Illinois bill by holding it in a committee he chaired, never calling a vote so it could be sent to the full Senate. This, I have since been informed, was incorrect.
Although the Illinois General Assembly's online bill tracking system indicates the bill was "held" in Obama's Health and Human Services Committee in 2003, former Sen. Rick Winkel, who sponsored it, and Sen. Dale Righter, then the committee's ranking Republican, both tell me that written records kept by Illinois Senate Republicans indicate Obama did bring the bill up for a vote and then voted against it. The bill, as amended, lost that vote four to six. In 2001, Republican Sen. Rick Santorum offered the federal version of the Born Alive Infants bill as an amendment. Boxer gave a floor speech explaining why it did not threaten Roe and why Democrats would vote for it.
On Jan. 1, the world learned from major news sources that some churches and their occupants were burned in Kenya by Kenyans who didn't like the outcome of a recent election. Were these perhaps Methodists burning Baptist churches? Catholics burning Episcopalian churches? Incredibly, the accounts of online news sources didn't say, suggesting that religion played little or no role.
I checked out the first five search results on Google using the search terms: Kenya church burning. These turned out to be the sites of the International Herald Tribune, USA Today, MSNBC, BBC and Los Angeles Times. I found no hint as to who these church incendiaries were. Were they sectarians? Atheists? What were the issues?
Finally, I went to lesser-known sites and discovered that a Muslim link is suspected in the church burnings (although to their credit, Muslim clerics there are denouncing the act).
An Islamic "jihad" is an effort by Muslims to convince "others to take up worthy causes, such as funding medical research," according to a middle school textbook used in California and other states.
And even at its most violent, "jihad" simply is Muslims fighting "to protect themselves from those who would do them harm," says the "History Alive! The Medieval World and Beyond" book published by Teachers' Curriculum Institute.
But a parent whose child has been handed the text in a Sacramento district is accusing the publisher of a pro-Muslim bias to the point that Islamic theology has been incorporated into the public school teachings.
Rove previews strategies against Clinton, Obama
Karl Rove told a group of state Republican officials Wednesday that while the GOP primaries “are far from over,” each of the candidates can beat the top two Democrats — and the former White House aide then outlined a strategy how.
While Rove, the man President Bush called “the architect,” might have retired from the White House, he is clearly still very much engaged in the day-to-day mechanics of the presidential contests on both sides.
In an address to a group of state GOP executive directors at the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) winter meeting, Rove outlined talking points for ways to defeat leading Democratic candidates Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.). The former adviser to the president did not mention former Sen. John Edwards (N.C.).
If you need any more proof that the concept of Global Warming is less "science" and is more just a replacement for the kind of failed concepts of communism and socialism that is increasingly being rejected by the world, two recent stories helps clarify the point. These same stories also highlight how the media facilitate the lies that is globaloney.
The first is a recent article by one Kellie Hastings, a writer who claims that her "research is thorough" and her "articles are written with style and intellect." In a piece titled "Deadly Ozone From Drive-Thru Mania," our Miss Hastings pours out her considerable "intellect" into the theory that drive thru windows are destroying the planet and making us a bunch of fatties.
These drive-thru window services contribute to smog, emissions, noise pollution, air pollution, pollution within the store itself as employees at the window are constantly breathing in exhaust fumes. They add to our obesity problem creating a lazy society. They congest the parking lots creating line ups adding to even more idling vehicles.
When asked to tell us what we actually need to do, rather than tell us what we all need to believe, ideologues on the Far Left and Far Right are uncharacteristically silent.
Both Nancy Pelosi and Ron Paul want the U.S. to get out of Iraq. Granted, their reasoning differs. Pelosi, who believes that Iraq is a “situation to be managed,” not an actual war, withholds her support to discredit the Bush Administration and thus help her political party at the ballot box. Paul’s opposition is based on his belief that the Iraq invasion is an unconstitutional exercise of power, in addition to being the wrong policy in the first place.
Both the Paul and Pelosi camps embrace the same four-word prescription we’ve heard over and over to give concrete political meaning to their beliefs: “Get out of Iraq”. When I noted in an earlier essay (“Whose Crazier, the Far Left or the Far Right?”) that the bottom line for the ideological Right and ideological Left is identical regarding the issue of Iraq, I was told that their underlying motivations mattered, and therein lay the difference.
Hillary Clinton needed only four words to unveil her novel proposal during a Nevada campaign stop earlier this week: “No woman is illegal.”
Hillary Clinton has come up with a brilliant solution to the problem of millions of illegals flooding our countryside. Ready for this? Simply declare them legal — at least when it comes to women. Mrs. Clinton needed only four words to unveil her novel proposal during a Nevada campaign stop earlier this week: “No woman is illegal.”
The idea of opening the floodgates to foreign women is intriguing. Of course the pesky Fourteenth Amendment does promise “equal protection of the laws,” an ideal that presumably was intended to apply to members of the male sex.
Anger Spreads Over NYT's Sleazy Story on Killer Veterans ***NEW***
By Clay Waters | January 17, 2008 - 11:37 ET
The blogosphere continues to boil with outrage over the Times's front-page story from Sunday on veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan and committing murders, a story immediately discredited by cursory research as journalistically and statistically worthless. The paper's main finding, that 121 veterans either committed a killing in this country or are charged with one, was useless without context, which the Times either couldn't or didn't provide.
The story failed basic journalism, with the Times making no attempt to compare murder rates of veterans to that of the general population. Can one imagine the Times spouting out a raw number of murders committed by, say, illegal immigrants? Without context, the Times' big finding was useless, a single data point floating in space.
Hoosier military personnel who entered the service after the 9/11 terror attacks and have been awarded the Purple Heart could get free education at state institutions under a bill that will get a second hearing next week before state lawmakers.
HB 1249 was tabled by the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee today, but will be brought up again next week with an amendment to make it effective this year, said Rep. Sheila Klinker, D-Lafayette.
The Purple Heart medal is awarded to service members wounded in combat. The children of Purple Heart recipients -- but not the wounded men and women themselves -- currently receive the educational benefit.
Ron Paul's Racist Swill ***NEW***
........Question: what's the difference between a "racist" and someone who was "complicit in a strategy of pandering to racists"? Nothing, as far as I can tell, except that at least the former is bit more honest about things.
So as damning as everyone thinks this stuff is, I think it's even more damning than that. We're not children here, after all. It's plain that Paul knew what was being published in his newsletters. It's plain that he was familiar with the well-developed strategy that inspired the early-90s turn to racist demagoguery. It's plain that he knew it was a key part of his fundraising appeal. Paul can weasel all he wants, but it's plain that he endorsed a strategy of overt appeals to racist sentiment in order to build support for his political career. If he's given all that up since then, it's only because he no longer needs it.
This whole affair highlights one of the reasons that I wish everyone would stop swooning over minor candidates who play the part of bold truthteller. When you have no chance of winning and therefore nothing to risk, it's cheap and easy to stick to your guns. But as Ron Paul has shown, back when it actually mattered he was willing to do whatever he needed to raise money and rekindle his political career. I don't doubt that he'd do it again if anything serious were on the line.
Olbermann Says His Critics, Including Military Officers, 'Can Go to Hell'
By Brad Wilmouth | January 18, 2008 - 00:53 ET
On Thursday's Countdown show, after recounting the story of American soldiers deployed to Iraq while still recovering from injuries, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann seemed to oddly suggest that not only military officers, but also politicians and even commentators, presumably conservative ones, were responsible for the orders that these troops be deployed. The Countdown host contended these critics of his are the same people who accuse those who are anti-war of "hating the troops" and of being "anti-American," and suggested that they "go to hell." Olbermann:
The men who ordered them back, in the military, and outside of it, are the ones who accuse those who criticize them of hating the troops or of being anti-American. And frankly, those politicians, those commentators, and those senior officers can go to hell.
Olbermann seemed to be citing a January 17 story in the Denver Post which focused on the case of Master Sergeant Denny Nelson of Fort Carson, Colorado's Third Brigade Combat Team, who was deployed to Kuwait, ostensibly for "light duty" as a liaison officer, while recovering from a leg injury he suffered on a trampoline. Nelson was deployed despite a decision by the Soldier Readiness Process site at Fort Collins that he should not be deployed. After his arrival in Kuwait, and his discovery of plans to send him into Iraq sooner than originally planned, a physician emailed Nelson's superior officer in Fort Collins, Captain Scot Tebo, "urging him to send Nelson back to the U.S.," leading to the master sergeant soon returning to the country. Islamic film produced in Iran refutes divinity of Jesus Christ
Biblical scholar Dr. Nicholas Perrin is warning Christians about a film produced by the radical Islamic regime in Iran that challenges the divinity of Jesus.
Hear this Report
The film, Jesus, the Spirit of God, is being touted as the first film giving the Islamic view of Jesus Christ. Film director Nader Talebzadeh says the film portrays Jesus as merely a prophet, but not the son of God. Perrin, an assistant professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Illinois, respectfully refutes the film's claims based on historical evidence in the four Gospels alone.
"We have four accounts of the historical Jesus written within decades after his death. And then we have on the other hand the Koran, written half a millennium later, which claims to trump the four Gospels historically," he argues.
Bush considering $800 tax rebate to boost US economy: report
Jan 18 05:42 AM US/Eastern
President George W. Bush's administration is considering an individual tax rebate of up to 800 dollars as a short term measure to help boost the sagging US economy, a media report said Friday.
The Republican leader was to unveil a fiscal stimulus plan later Friday, amid grim economic news that has united lawmakers and the Federal Reserve chief on the need to revive flagging US growth.
The White House has said Bush would propose policies, not dollar amounts, because details of the plan must be hammered out with the Democratic-controlled Congress.
Nevada, South Carolina Contests May Produce New Front-Runners ***NEW***
WASHINGTON — White House hopefuls struggled for an edge in tight nomination races unfolding Saturday in Nevada and South Carolina that were shadowed by racial politics and the threat of economic recession. No front-runner had emerged in either party as South Carolina’s Republicans headed for the polls and Nevadans of both parties prepared for the novelty of caucuses. South Carolina will hold the Democrats’ primary later in the month.
“My friends, these are challenging times,” Republican John McCain told supporters Friday while aboard a World War II aircraft carrier in Charleston’s harbor. He was referring to the slumping economy, but he could have been talking about the intensity and the expense of the neck-and-neck fight for the Republican nomination.
In the East, Republicans battled for delegates in South Carolina, home of 6.6 percent unemployment in December after the largest one-month increase in nearly 20 years
Bloomberg Meets With Perot Manager, Ballot Expert ***NEW***
Friday, January 18, 2008
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg met Friday with the ballot access expert and campaign manager for H. Ross Perot's third-party presidential bid, a sign of the multibillionaire's seriousness about a possible independent run.
Bloomberg met privately with Clay Mulford, who is well-versed in third-party ballot access and served as campaign manager for Perot, according to an individual close to the mayor. Perot sought the presidency in 1992 and 1996. The lunch meeting with Mulford comes less than two months before Bloomberg would be able to start gathering signatures to get on the ballot and meet Texas' early deadline.
If Bloomberg wants a chance at winning the state's large slice of electoral votes -- 34 -- he would need to collect about 74,100 signatures by May 12, and cannot begin circulating petitions here until March 5. Not only does he have a short window to petition, the signatures need to be from Texas residents who did not vote in a party primary.
Black firefighters called it a "terrible act of hate." Racial tension in the
After a two-week inquiry, the FBI concluded that happenstance, not hate, was
the leading factor. The monkey, retrieved from a fire scene, had been draped
from a coat rack to dry. The noose was actually an equipment strap around its
neck. No racial bias was involved, the agency said.
The Canadian citizen's appearance in a Manhattan courtroom will be his first time in public since his detention in 2002. Thursday marked the first time the court system made public any details of his case, which has been under seal since his arrest.
Republican presidential hopefuls faced off in sleepy Nevada caucuses and a hard-fought South Carolina primary on Saturday, a pair of contests likely to winnow an unwieldy field of rivals.
Democrats shared the stage in Nevada, with Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama vying for a victory and the campaign momentum that goes with it.
Alone among the Republican contenders, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas aired television ads in Nevada, and the libertarian-leaning Texan looked for his best showing of the campaign season. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney campaigned in the state, hoping to add to his earlier victories in the Wyoming caucuses as well as last Tuesday's Michigan primary.
Mitt Romney has been declared the winner in the Nevada Republican caucuses, giving him back-to-back victories in the race for the nomination.
Early returns showed him taking 46 percent in the state, followed by Ron Paul and John McCain with 15 percent each, Mike Huckabee with 9 percent, Fred Thompson with 10 percent and Rudy Giuliani with 3 percent.
The former Massachusetts governor was one of the few Republicans with any campaign presence in the state, as his top competitors stayed in South Carolina ahead of its influential first-in-the-South primary the same day. Paul was airing television ads in Nevada, and Romney left South Carolina to make a final push in the state Thursday.
"We are concerned about the weather but we can't control it," said Mary Mills. "I'm an evangelical and I voted my conscience."
At the same polling station, Huckabee told reporters he is concerned about the weather in that part of the state, which is home to many of South Carolina's evangelical voters who make up his base.
"If it starts snowing up there, that's something we hoped wouldn't happen," he said. "I just hope that our voters are so committed that it doesn't affect the fact that they are going to vote because it's a mission they have to deal with today."
Bill Clinton says*** he witnessed voter suppression
Bill Clinton, speaking at a Vegas YMCA last night, made more charges against Obama and claimed to have, with Chelsea, personally witnessed voter suppression by the Culinary Workers:
There is this whole business of the new politics. Well I got a taste of the new politics today. We need a new politics where we all love each other. You’ve heard all that. There’s a radio ad up in the northern part of Nevada telling Republicans that they ought to just register as Democrats for a day so they can beat Hillary and go out and be Republicans next week and vote in the primary. Doesn’t sound like the new politics to me.
Today when my daughter and I were wandering through the hotel, and all these culinary workers were mobbing us telling us they didn’t care what the union told them to do, they were gonna caucus for Hillary.
A Clemson University pollster and political scientist says in his 23 years on campus, he's never seen as much excitement from young Democrats about a presidential candidate as they're now showing for Barack Obama. That's why David Woodard suggests the January 26 Democratic presidential primary in his state will be Hillary Clinton's "Gettysburg."
Clinton, Romney win in Nevada
McCain, Huckabee duel in S.C. primary
WASHINGTON - NBC News declared Hillary Clinton as the projected winner in Nevada presidential caucuses on Saturday.
Clinton and Barack Obama vied heavily in a race marred by last-minute claims of dirty politics. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney easily won the Republican contest.
For Romney, the Nevada victory marked a second straight success for the former Massachusetts governor, coming quickly after a first-place finish in the Michigan primary revived a faltering campaign.
Mormons Give Romney Big Vote in Nevada
RELIGION COUNTS
About a quarter of Nevada GOP voters were Mormon, and virtually all of them preferred Mitt Romney. Overall, about half of Romney's Nevada votes came from Mormons. Among non-Mormons, he had a slight lead over Ron Paul. National polls have shown that his Mormon religion is a problem for significant numbers of Republican voters. Romney and Mike Huckabee were doing best among white born-again and evangelical Christians.
THE HEART OF THE PARTY
People calling themselves Republicans dominated the Nevada GOP caucuses, and they overwhelmingly preferred Romney. Independents just as heavily picked Ron Paul. Conservatives also were in the majority, and they picked Romney. Moderates were more evenly divided between Romney, John McCain and Paul.
ISSUES THAT MATTER
The economy and immigration were the issues most on the minds of Nevada Republicans, and Romney won with both groups.
Paul contends for second place in Nevada GOP caucuses
Posted: 03:42 PM ET
(CNN) — Ron Paul is currently battling for second with his Republican rivals in the party's Nevada caucuses in early returns, at 12 percent of the vote with about two-fifths of the ballots counted.
Mitt Romney is projected to win the Republican caucuses there, thanks in part to unusually high turnout among the state’s sizeable Mormon minority. He currently has 55 percent of the vote.
Most of the GOP candidates, with the exception of Romney and Paul, did not campaign in Nevada, focusing instead on South Carolina’s first-in-the-South vote, also on Saturday.
