I have never been much of an Ann Coulter fan. I tend to prefer substantive argument to flame-throwing. There is plenty of very substantive conservative political argument around. Some of it has appeared on this website the last four years.

There is a history with Coulter of making comments on some radio or cable TV interview program that offend some group or individual pretty much every time she has a new book to sell. For an author who likes to be in your face, such provocation, with the resulting publicity frenzy that accompanies such statements, is undoubtedly good for promoting book sales to her loyal base.

The issue with Coulter is not whether she can sell books, but whether she helps or hurts the side of the political debate she claims to support. In my opinion, Coulter has never been a big help to the effort to build a conservative and Republican majority. Her most recent comments on the relationship of Christianity to Judaism, made on the CNBC show " The Big Idea" with Donnie Deutsch on Monday of this week , may prove particularly damaging.

Every few months or so, this country’s well-known race-mongers get their manufactured event to which they can summon the exuberance of the idiotic youth they easily puppeteer. It is the worst of traits to simultaneously allow yourself to be so effortlessly swayed in both opinion and action, while remaining just lazy enough not to look into the issue to which you are being manipulated. If you fit this description, you probably think the Jena Six episode is evidence of a bigoted American suburbia, stuck in its xenophobic close-mindedness of yesteryear; a violation of human rights – as one professor put it – enough to coerce a presidential mea culpa at the alter of the General Assembly of the United Nations.



How low have our journalistic standards plunged when we are looking to MTV to uphold such integrity? Perhaps this redeems the station which once utilized “Vote or Die” scare tactics, downright lying to the voting constituency about the possibilities of a military draft before the 2004 election. The Associated Press got all the nitty-gritty facts of the Jena case wrong as well, seeking more Rubin “Hurricane” Carter-type sensationalism.

A Mexican national infected with a highly contagious form of tuberculosis crossed the U.S. border 76 times and took multiple domestic flights in the past year, according to Customs and Border Protection interviews and documents obtained by The Washington Times.

The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency was warned by health officials on April 16 that the frequent traveler was infected, but it took Homeland Security officials more than six weeks to issue a May 31 alert to warn its own border inspectors, according to Homeland Security sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution. Homeland Security took a further week to tell its own Transportation Security Agency.

Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a highly contagious illness and also resistant to the two most commonly used drugs to treat TB. It is the same dangerous strain of tuberculosis that concerned health officials when Andrew Speaker, a 31-year-old Atlanta lawyer, slipped into the U.S. from Europe via a flight to Canada. The story set off alarms that the system had failed to identify the contagious passenger, which led to congressional hearings in June.
