Postrel assesses policies based not on whether they are liberal or conservative but on whether they are dynamist -- promoting or leaving room for change -- or stasist -- tending to freeze institutions and people in place.

Crowley, who is white, sparked a national debate on race relations and policing when he arrested Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. for disorderly conduct at Gates' home in Cambridge, Mass. Gates is black.

More than 3,000 police officers cheered Crowley when he spoke at the Long Beach Convention Center. Dozens left their seats to take snapshots of him as he stood at the podium.

"The past month has been very difficult for my family, my friends and my colleagues back in Cambridge, and it's no exaggeration to say that it wouldn't be as easy for me to handle this without the support from the Fraternal Order of Police ... and the support that the men and women who do this job have given me," he said. Roman Catholic leaders are stepping up their fight against the Obama administration’s healthcare plans, urging their faithful nationwide to contact legislators to strongly protest abortion provisions in Democratic bills.

Catholics who attended Mass Sunday in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, for example, found in their weekly bulletins a call to action from Cardinal Justin Rigali, head of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops pro-life committee. The archdiocese, one of the largest in the nation, serves 1.45 million Catholics.

“While this legislation is still in draft form, the request for action at the local level is imperative,” the cardinal wrote. “…[W]e must take action now to share our thoughts and beliefs with our national legislators in time for them to consider incorporating these points when deliberation resume in September.

“We need to ensure that the new legislation preserves freedom of conscience for healthcare professionals and does not violate the right to life by allocating tax revenues for abortions.”

An author and critic of Islam doesn't think it would be a good idea for the English language version of Al Jazeera to have a stronger footprint in the United States.

Since launching on November 15, 2006, Al Jazeera English has exceeded its founders' expectations. The Qatar government-owned channel had expected to reach around 40 million households when it went on the air, but far exceeded that launch target by reaching 80 million households.

And a station spokeswoman said as of 2009, Al Jazeera English is available to 140 million homes in over 100 countries through cable and satellite. But its penetration into the North American market is virtually non-existent, only appearing on four outlets. Now the pro-Muslim network is launching an online campaign to try to expand its North American reach.

The report recounted that Obama recently had to correct a claim that the AARP supports his plan, while some are suspicious that the group may support the President privately, but are unwilling to admit to doing so publicly.

Substitute anchor Maggie Rodriguez noted that Obama had to backtrack on claiming AARP support as she introduced the story: "President Obama once thought he had the AARP on board, as he put it, on his plan for health care reform, but he has since had to back off on that claim."

Attkisson started by relating that many AARP members have recently left the group, with a considerable number flocking to the ASA: "CBS News has learned that up to 60,000 people have cancelled their AARP membership since July 1 angered over the group's position on health care. ... Firmly planted in the print world with his widely read syndicated thrice-a-week column, Bob also was an innovator in the electronic media. But more than that, his contributions to the great debates of the day demonstrated that Bob was someone who thought deeply about his country, its system of government and the challenges both faced. The percentage of Americans who hold a favorable view of the Democratic Party has slipped below 50 percent for the first time since President Barack Obama took office, according to a new Pew Research Center poll released Wednesday.

Only 49 percent of Americans now hold a favorable view of the Democratic Party, down from 62 percent in the same poll shortly after Obama assumed office. Democratic favorable ratings hovered around 60 percent as recently as April, when 59 percent of those polled held a favorable view.

The national survey of 2,010 adults conducted Aug. 11-17 also found that 51 percent of Americans approve of Obama’s job performance with 37 percent disapproving. Independents split 45 percent-43 percent in approving of the president’s performance.

Bachus, the ranking member of the House Committee on Financial Services, said most people seem unaware of the impending crisis. He initially said Social Security could face "default" within two years, but his staff responded later saying the Congresssman intended to say "deficit."

“What this recession has done to Social Security is pretty alarming,” he said. “We’ve known for 15 years that we were going to have to make adjustments to Social Security, but we still thought that was seven or eight years down the road. But if things don’t improve very quickly, we’re going to be dealing with that problem before we know it.”

Even with talk of compromise on healthcare reform, the abortion issue seems to warrant no negotiation.

Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee notes that apparently there is no backing off the abortion issue. He adds that the Obama administration is pushing for a big, national health insurance plan run by the federal government to cover elective abortions.

"People would be forced to pay premiums for elective abortions if they wanted to participate in this new government program. Liberals say they'll blockade any bill that doesn't include a government-run insurance program. And labor says it will sit out the 2010 elections if the president doesn't come across with a stout public plan.

Meanwhile, the moderate Democrats who were wooed for weeks by the administration are sidling toward the door, saying that the best thing would be just to start over.

Just seven months into his term -- and 14 months before the 2010 midterm election -- and could it be, is President Obama already a lame duck?


With his passive management style -- which inevitably led to overreaching and heavy-handedness by Congressional Democrats Obama has made himself largely irrelevant on many of the issues he ran on, from health care "reform" to "resetting" our foreign relations. Here are seven signs that Obama's political suasion is waning:

1. On the heels of Obama's tacit DNR on the end-of-life death panels in the Senate Finance Committee's health care "reform" proposal, the administration signaled that it is also willing to bury what has always been a key element of the president's plans for healthcare "reform"(watch this video) -- a government financed "public option" to compete with (and eventually drive out of business) private health insurers. Bowing to opposition from Republicans in both houses of Congress, and fiscally conservative Blue Dog Democrats in the House, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius said on CNN's "State of the Union" that the administration's fall-back position would be to support creation of consumer-owned nonprofit health insurance cooperatives. But the compromise is anathema to House Dems and Obama's liberal base, who vowed to fight to the bitter end for the public option. Either way, it's a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't situation for Obama (and we saw Sebelieus backtrack on Tuesday) and demonstrates how completely he has lost control of the health care debate.


2. After repeatedly insisting on getting a bill on his desk before Congress recessed for the summer, President Obama thought he had a deal with Senate Finance Committee chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) that if the "Gang of Six" -- three Democrats and three Republican senators on the Finance Committee -- can't reach a consensus on a bipartisan bill by September 15 then the effort will be scrapped and Dems will push forward with their partisan proposals. But then Gang of Six member Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) told "FOX News Sunday's" Chris Wallace that he and the others will not be "held hostage" by the mid-September deadline, and that he and his five colleagues "rejected" a specific timetable, because "it's more important to get this right."In a warning to Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, he added, "What we have agreed to is that we are going to be ready when we're ready.".................

Zogby's poll is not the most reliable but I think it is safe to say after seeing other polls that Obama's numbers are dropping rapidly and that he is definitely below 50% approval.

CNN anchor Rick Sanchez and guest Mark Potok of the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center concluded that there was a “disconcerting” infiltration of militia groups into tea party and health care town hall protests during a segment on Thursday’s Newsroom. The two focused on the appearance of armed people at these events, and one individual’s apparent connection to a militia which plotted violence.

Sanchez interviewed Potok at the bottom of the 3 pm Eastern hour on how Ernest Hancock, a Ron Paul supporter and online radio host, reportedly defended the members of a militia called the Viper Team. Hancock also interviewed an acquaintance of his who openly-carried an AR-15 near a venue where President Obama was speaking. Before introducing Potok, the CNN anchor used a clip from a former Secret Service agent he interviewed to hint that Hancock and his acquaintance were “gun nuts.” He then played a clip of the rifle-carrying individual himself, who railed against taxation which redistributed wealth and a tyranny of the majority: “I want this and that, this and that, and I’ll just vote and take it from you. The burden of all this thievery gets too thick.....we will forcefully resist people imposing their will on us through the strength of the majority with a vote.” Sanchez then implied that these words were a threat of violence: “Somehow, the words ‘forcefully resist’ coming from a man with an AR-15 outside a presidential event is just a little unsettling.”

After calling out Hancock for “pretending to be a reporter” in his interview of his armed colleague, the anchor turned to SPLC director and asked, “You think maybe Americans should start to get a little concerned about this?” Before outlining his case against Hancock, Potok blasted the rifle-carrying individual’s statement:............

“Much-needed reform must not become a vehicle for promoting an ‘abortion rights’ agenda or reversing longstanding policies against federal funding and mandated coverage of abortion,” Rigali wrote.

NEW Yorkers were shocked to learn last month that the NYPD won't be receiving any of the $1 billion in stimulus funds earmarked for police hiring nationwide. As its reason for bypassing New York City, the Justice Department suggested that our crime rate is so low, we don't need any more cops.

Of course it was to keep crime down that the city requested funds to eventually hire 2,000 more officers and was expecting an initial outlay to support 200 to 300. Shortly after the turndown was announced, the Department of Homeland Security did find funds to permit the NYPD to assign 120 additional officers to transit patrol. But this was only a drop in the bucket.

Yes, New York has had huge crime reductions over the past two decades. Murders, for example, are down from the range of 2,200 a year in 1990 to around 400 this year. But it's a mistake to simply think these low crime rates are inherently permanent -- as foolish as believing, a couple of years ago, that the stock market (or home values) would always keep climbing. The bad old days could easily come back.

One of the first news stories I saw yesterday morning was that in a Wednesday conference call with liberal religious leaders, Mr. Obama declared that health coverage for Americans is a "core ethical and moral obligation", and he asked these influentials to “spread the facts and speak the truth.” (That is, he asked religious leaders to help him ram through Congress – Americans’ disapproval of it be damned - his nationalized “health” “care” scheme.) Whether this claim of a moral imperative is true, it appears to be the Democrats’ new focus-group-tested approach to selling a government takeover of the management and disbursement of all Americans’ health care and, consequently, control over our very lives. Once again, I hope he fails.

Cynically ignoring his own disinformation and misinformation campaign spread across the airwaves as no one else can, Mr. Obama said, "I know that there's been a lot of misinformation in this debate and there are some folks out there who are, frankly, bearing false witness." So, although the very mention of God and Jesus are not allowed in public schools or any public places (and dare I say…God save the Florida high school principal and coach who are facing criminal charges and the loss of their retirement benefits for offering a mealtime prayer), Mr. Obama is now invoking God’s teachings interstate for the express purpose of shoving through unwanted government policy onto the backs of We the People. Where is the ACLU when you need them?

There are almost no words to describe the, er, audacity of this cynical and shameful power grab, but let me try.

At the outset it seems particularly disingenuous that this president, who has not found it important enough to have yet chosen a church for himself since the Reverend Wright affair, would all of a sudden invoke ancient Hebrew scriptures and find God in the form of a small army of holy disciples who might fall in lock step behind him to sell his dastardly scheme to the American public. While he apparently doesn’t seek God for his own salvation, it appears Mr. Obama sees no irony in seeking God for his own political ends. Can you imagine the international uproar if President Bush had even hinted at such a ploy?

By the way, wasn’t it Obama who said: “We are not a Christian nation?” And, speaking to Rabbis while attempting to paraphrase a line from a Rosh Hashanah prayer, Obama--with his unending and increasingly insufferable arrogance--said: “We are God’s partners in matters of life and death!” Then, while many of us quote the proverbial ‘chapter and verse’ of the House version of ObamaCare, Obama and his media say--while offering no evidence of truth whatsoever--we who quote from the only ObamaCare program available are spreading “myths” and “misleading” the public. And now, Obama has decided to include an attempt at a Biblical quotation by saying we are “bearing false witness.” Funny stuff, BO! Earth to Obama: The myths, misleading statements and bearing of any and all “false witness” are yours. But, then we already knew that you knew.

Note: I wonder what the Lord thinks about Obama‘s challenging, patently fictitious and assumptive statements. Hmm. I also wonder why Obama didn’t “reach out” to Muslim leaders. Curious.

The eliciting of religious leaders is the latest tactic in Obama’s overall strategy to force his Marxist-inspired “healthcare” system and agenda. By the way, I find it immensely interesting and somewhat humorous that Marxist ideology is--by its very nature--atheistic. However, ObamaCare provides little to no authentic healthcare. In fact it actually withholds the “health” and “care” portion. But, according to HR 3200--including amongst its other atrocities the government’s proposed new “right” to take from our private bank accounts as it so desires (P 59), to do away with private insurance (P 16) and to ration health services (P 29)--, it does instill massive new ObamaControls upon a now vocally balking-at-ObamaCare US population.

The White House hired a private communications company based in Minnesota to distribute mass e-mails, helping to shed light on how some recipients received e-mails in support of President Obama's health care plan without signing up for them, FOX News has learned.

The company, Govdelivery, describes itself as the world's leading provider of government-to-citizen communication solutions and says its e-mail service provides a fully-automated on-demand public communication system.

It is still unknown how much taxpayer money the White House provides to Govdelivery for its services.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's domestic policy proposals will face the reality of skyrocketing deficits on Tuesday when officials release two government reports projecting huge budget shortfalls over the next decade.

The White House budget office and the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a non-partisan arm of Congress, release updated economic forecasts and deficit estimates on Tuesday, providing further fiscal fodder to opponents of Obama's nearly $1 trillion healthcare overhaul plan.

Many of the figures are already known.

The White House has confirmed that its deficit estimate for the 2009 fiscal year, which ends September 30, will inch down to $1.58 trillion from $1.84 trillion after eliminating billions of dollars originally set aside for bank rescues.

The climate-change legislation that the House of Representatives passed on a party-line vote was D.O.A. in the Senate. Talk radio expert Brian Jennings tells Newsmax.TV that’s an ominous sign of what liberal Democrats intend to do.

“Here is a gentleman, Mr. Lloyd, who has written many times publically about his disdain, his dislike of conservative talk radio and his desire to control radio and the airwaves and what is heard on those airwaves. There is no question he is an enemy of conservative talk radio, and he’s been appointed as chief diversity officer inside the FCC. Before White House press secretary Robert Gibbs left town, he tried to clarify President Barack Obama’s comment that “everybody in Washington gets all wee-weed up.” Gibbs explained to reporters that what the president meant was that they were a bunch of bed wetters who made too much out of the implosion of the White House health care strategy.

Gibbs has grown more sardonic and patronizing as the summer wears on and Obama’s poll numbers wilt.

The press secretary has lectured reporters on the nature of their jobs — apparently to defend the administration against “misinformation” rather than asking impertinent questions like “How will you pay for it?”

The outspoken protests over ObamaCare's "end-of-life counseling" may have gotten the so-called "dealth panels" provision removed from the Senate's bill, but many still worry that a government-run plan will encourage end-of-life consultations with the elderly and chronically ill to contain overall costs--a valid concern given the Obama administration recently reinstated a program called "Your Life, Your Choices" for America's wounded veterans--mentioned in Greg's post earlier. The Wall Street Journal reports that the VA program only pressures wounded vets to refuse life-saving treatment:

“Your Life, Your Choices” presents end-of-life choices in a way aimed at steering users toward predetermined conclusions, much like a political “push poll.” For example, a worksheet on page 21 lists various scenarios and asks users to then decide whether their own life would be “not worth living.”

The circumstances listed include ones common among the elderly and disabled: living in a nursing home, being in a wheelchair and not being able to “shake the blues.” There is a section which provocatively asks, “Have you ever heard anyone say, ‘If I’m a vegetable, pull the plug’?” There also are guilt-inducing scenarios such as “I can no longer contribute to my family’s well being,” “I am a severe financial burden on my family” and that the vet’s situation “causes severe emotional burden for my family.”

Under the “reformed” medical system that the President seeks, it’s not pleasant to speculate about what the past few years would have meant for Dad. He was in fragile health; having survived prostate cancer 19 years ago and a triple bypass five years later, he had been undergoing peritoneal dialysis since a health crisis two years ago. There’s no doubt that he fell into the category the President has described as “the chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives” who “are accounting for potentially 80% of the total [cost of] health care.” So under ObamaCare, at what point would his life have been deemed to be no longer “worth” saving?

Everyone knows that liberals and most other politicians know better what is good for America than do the people who elected them. They are the smartest, most eloquent, most knowledgeable, most likeable, the smoothest, and most trustworthy; and therefore they are the “elect.” All except Barney Frank, whose arrogant attitude means the American mainstream would do well to lick his loafers.

As one who has had significant experience with perpetrators of fraud while working in government, on the Internet, and in business, it is noteworthy that people with attributes noted above are the most frequent perpetrators. They are the ones who would take grandma’s last pennies and run to the bank; they promise the sun, moon and stars and make it believable; then when things go wrong, they are skillful enough not only deflect blame, but to spread it around to others, even to the victim. They never see anything that they did or might do would be wrong and always paint themselves as the victim.
