Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, the Mr. Magoo of American politics, stumbled onto the otetruth last week. He discovered the law of supply and demand. "We want to put [more oil] on the market to increase supply and lower prices," Reid said. "With oil and gas prices continuing to break record highs every day, much more needs to be done."

Indeed it does. But Reid won't allow it. His understanding of economics only extends to matters in which he might embarrass President Bush. The oil he wants on the market is the oil the administration is buying for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), now nearly full. Reid got his way. The administration now plans to stop oil shipments to the SPR next month.

Beyond that, Reid and his party are committed to suppressing increased oil production in this country, as they wait for that magical day when fossil fuels are no longer needed to supply the nation's energy needs.

Both of these Democrat “leaders” were operating in a rogue manner outside of US policy towards terrorist and terrorist-sponsoring states. Obama has now joined them with his ‘If I’m elected President of the United States I’ll sit down - with NO preconditions - for a talk with the President of Iran’. And even though Obama’s statements have been widely reported and are contained in videos, he has apparently decided that he wants the American people to believe him and not their lyin’ eyes and ears. The mainstream press agrees and is tirelessly working to protect their Candidate Obama. So much for the truth.

But, a closer read finds a far murkier story and one that seems to say that our Marines didn't go wild but that they thought they were under attack. Whether the Marines were right or wrong about being attacked is the real question at the end of the day. But whatever the case, right at the outset the AP presented the incident as if the Marines were in the wrong.

Even the headline casts the Marines actions in the negative: "Afghans appalled Marines not charged in killings." No benefit of the doubt there. In fact, the whole first half of the story explores the charges against the Marines before a single word in their defense appears.

Well, the loss rates would not have been surprising to the defenders of Bastogne, the armies at Antietam, or the servicemen and women in any other major war, but it is true that US land forces have been asked to do too much with too little for too long.

What is it with liberal pundits and taxes? MSNBC blowhard Keith Olbermann has become the latest liberal political figure to get in trouble for failing to pay his government dues, our friends at Olbermann Watch report:

New York State has issued a tax warrant against Keith Olbermann for failure to pay taxes on his humbly named personal corporation, Olbermann Broadcasting Empire, Inc. Olbermann is listed in legal records as the President of Olbermann Broadcasting Empire, Inc.

A call to the Albany County Clerk's Office in upstate New York confirmed that the warrant is still outstanding and that Olbermann has still failed to pay his back taxes. State records show that Olbermann's company failed to pay $2,269.50 in state taxes. A judgement was entered against Olbermann last summer (Docket Date: 8/21/2007), just weeks before Olbermann closed on a a luxurious $4.2 mm condo at Trump Palace, at 200 East 69th Street.

Foods seem to be rising in price in direct proportion to their proximity to ethanol subsidies. Feed grain is up an amazing 41% in the past year. Fruit and nuts are down 3% over the same period. Why? Because we turn corn into ethanol, but we don’t do the same with walnuts or bananas.

Here in the center of the world economy, this means high food prices. Out at the edges, it means famine. When food gets expensive here, we tap into a little more credit, or perhaps skip restaurants for awhile. When food gets expensive in Malaysia, they riot in the streets. When food gets too expensive in Cape Town, some men take to the streets in violent roving bands, maiming and murdering refugees who’ve come from other countries in search of something to eat.

A statement from the Massachusetts Democrat's office said the surgery would take place on Monday morning in Durham, N.C., by one of the nation's top neurosurgeons, Dr. Allan Friedman, followed by chemotherapy and radiation.

Anthony Coley, a Kennedy spokesman, said the surgery is scheduled to begin around 9 a.m. and expected to last about six hours. He expects to remain at the North Carolina facility for one week to recuperate and then will begin further treatments at Massachusetts General Hospital and start chemotherapy.

Tim Russert, whom I only knew through his work, seemed a good man: hard-working, well-prepared, bursting with energy, and infectiously ebullient. Judging by the farewell he got from his television news colleagues yesterday, he was also a major political figure. One might have thought that a political figure of the magnitude of a one term ex-president had passed away, based on the prominence and amount of time devoted to his death. That Tim Russert rated this level of attention is both a tribute to him and a commentary on the level of admiration he enjoyed in his slightly solipsistic profession.

His family has everyone's deep sympathy for their sudden loss. His father, about whom he has written and spoken memorably, faces a fate everyone hopes to avoid, the death of a child. His wife Maureen Orth, whose writing I have admired, has lost her life's companion. And his son Luke, also a media figure thanks to his father's inability to avoid a personal subject about which he cared so deeply, has a profound loss. His cousins (one of whom I know) and other family members also deserve our sympathy, for they also have lost a man who believed in and practiced family ties.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Hundreds of gay and lesbian couples had appointments to secure marriage licenses and exchange vows Tuesday, the first full day same-sex nuptials will be legal throughout California.

From San Diego to San Francisco, couples readied their formal wear, local licensing clerks expanded their staffs and conservative groups warned of a backlash as the nation's most populous state prepared to join Massachusetts in sanctioning gay unions.

Unlike Massachusetts, which legalized same-sex marriage in 2004, California has no residency requirement for marriage licenses, which is expected to encourage a large number of couples to head west to wed.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Sen. John McCain said Monday the federal moratorium on offshore oil and gas drilling should be lifted, and individual states given the right to pursue energy exploration in waters near their own coasts.

With gasoline prices rising and the United States chronically dependent on foreign oil, the Republican presidential contender said his proposal would "be very helpful in the short term resolving our energy crisis."

McCain also suggested giving the states incentives, including a greater share of royalties paid by companies that drill for oil, as an incentive to permit exploration.

IED-caused casualties have dropped 89 percent since the surge went full force last June, according to a Cybercast News Service database of Iraq casualties.

IED-caused casualties spiked in the early part of last year as the surge began. In January 2007, the U.S. started deploying an additional 30,000 troops to the country. The surge in forces was completed in mid-June.
